Chapter Four: Eds and Naomi's Rise for the Badge: A Gym Leaders True Strength Revealed!
The Eds, Naomi and Nazz came up to a gate with a sign on it. It read: Exit Through the Viridian Forest and to Route 2. They walked through the gate to see a town on the other side of the hill. They smiled at the sight of it, and soon ran towards the town, or in Double D's case walked. They soon came up to a Pokémon center, where they checked their Pokémon in for a while. After that they began to eat at the diner of the Center. Eddy and Ed were chowing down the most, while Double D and Naomi ate slowly. Double D paused to think about something. It was about the Vulpix Eddy had found, he was being a little secretive about what happened to it.
"Hey Eddy?" Double D waved his hand in front of his short friend's face.
"Yeah." Eddy replied.
"What happened to the Vulpix exactly?" Double D asked, which made Eddy stop eating.
"I just found it like that." Eddy stated in dry tone.
"Eddy, if there's something you know, you should tell us. We're your friends." Double D proclaimed, which made Eddy glare.
"I said it was nothing!" Eddy shouted which got the attention of some on-lookers. As if on cue the intercom came on: Naomi, Ed, Eddward, and Eddy, please come to the front desk. Your Pokémon have been restored.
Eddy saw this as a way to escape the conversation and ran out of the diner to the front desk. Double D sighed and walked out of the diner as well, followed by Naomi and Ed. The nurse handed the trainers their Pokémon back to them. Eddy decided to check out his Vulpix, which made him release it from its pokeball. The Vulpix was strange in origin, because instead of six tails, it had three. Eddy looked at his Pokédex to see what a Vulpix should look like and he saw it had six tails. He looked back at the three tailed Vulpix, making sure the Vulpix wasn't sick or anything.
"Odd," Double D examined the Vulpix, which made it glare at him. "This Vulpix is suppose to have six tails, not three. This might be a rare type of Vulpix."
"Only one way to find out." Naomi stated.
"To find the lost city of Vulpixantis?" Ed blurted out, which the others ignored.
"Prof. Salem." Double D proclaimed. They all walked over to one of the videophones that were located in front. Double D was the one to type in the Professor's phone number. The screen showed Prof. Salem examining a beaver like Pokémon and he turned to see the group.
"Ah, Eds and Naomi! Nice to see you again." Prof. Salem noticed Eddy's Pokéball belt had six Pokéballs. "And Eddy I see you caught six Pokémon. Just a little tip of information, any other Pokémon you catch will be teleported back here to my lab."
"Seems functional, since it would be difficult to carry a bunch of Pokémon at our belts." Double D stated.
"Hey Prof. Salem, we found this strange Vulpix." Eddy held up the Vulpix with three tails.
"Hmm, it seems this Pokémon has been treated with nothing but pain." Prof. Salem stated.
"What's that mean?" Eddy asked confused.
"You see, Vulpixes are born with one tail," Prof. Salem explained. "which splits into six tails if its been happy. This one's dealt with pain from life, emotional or physical, and therefore the tail will only split into three."
"So if its been hurt, it can't generate the other three?" Double D asked.
"Precisely." Prof. Salem answered.
"So, what happens if it doesn't have those other three tails?" Eddy asked.
"Well, nothing. It can still use attacks such as Ember or Tail Whip." Prof. Salem stated.
"Wait, if its been hurt wouldn't it be trying to attack me, because when I first picked it up, it bit me!" Eddy shouted.
"Well first look down at your arms." Prof. Salem suggested. Eddy looked down to see the Vulpix had a small smile on her face. Ed was about to pet it, only he got a face full of fire from the fire fox. Ed ran around the room screaming 'my face is on fire' over and over. Luckily Nurse Joy got a fire extinguisher to put out the fire on Ed's face.
"It would seem that the Vulpix only trusts you Eddy." Double D proclaimed.
"Why me?!" Eddy asked.
"Well, since you were the first one to come to its aid, I assume it sees you as an appropriate person to care for it, like a big brother so to speak." Prof. Salem assumed.
"Well, a Pokémon's a Pokémon I guess." Eddy stated. "Wait, can I send two Pokémon to you. I just don't want my team to get crowded."
"Sure." Prof. Salem shrugged. "Also, if I may ask what Pokémon have you four caught?"
"Well, I caught a Spearow, Shroomish, Metapod, Nincada, and Vulpix right here." Eddy held up the female fox Pokémon.
"I caught a Sewaddle, and a Noctowl." Double D explained.
"I caught a Rattata, and a Wurmple." Naomi stated.
"I caught a Lotad, and I was sold this one." Ed let out his Magikarp, which flopped on the floor.
"You have a Magikarp!" Prof. Salem shouted. "Ed, if you wouldn't mind sending me Magikarp, I want to try something."
"Gotcha PokéProf!" Ed shouted, as he returned Magikarp.
"How do we send you Pokémon?" Double D asked.
"There's a Pokéball transporter on the side of the video phone your using." Prof. Salem gestured to the glass container on the side of the machine. Ed smiled, as he opened the container, placing Magikarp's Pokéball into it. The container glowed bright and soon the Pokéball was gone. Prof. Salem held up the Pokéball to the screen and unleashed the Magikarp.
"Why do you need Ed's Magikarp?" Naomi asked.
"You see, it's scientifically impossible to use a TM-" Prof. Salem was interrupted by Eddy.
"TM?" Eddy questioned.
"It means Technical Machine." Double D stated, "You see, Technical Machines or TMs for short, can be used to teach Pokémon new moves."
"That's right Double D," Prof. Salem stated. "You see its scientifically impossible to use a TM on a Magikarp, but I have created a TM that can work on it."
"Fascinating." Double D awed, though his friends were lost in the science jabber.
"This TM," Prof. Salem held up a blue CD, "Contains Bubblebeam, which is a water-type move. Now watch."
Prof. Salem placed the CD on the Magikarp's head, which made the Pokémon vibrate. The Eds and Naomi watched and the CD vanished after a while.
"Ok, now Magikarp, use Bubblebeam!" Prof. Salem commanded, which made the Magikarp shoot bubbles at him. "Success! Unfortunately, I forgot to use a TM that can be reused."
"That's awesome!" Ed shouted, smiling.
"You see, Magikarp are considered weak Pokémon, so I decided to change that by making a TM that could actually work on them!" Prof. Salem proclaimed.
"You certainly are a Move Researcher." Double D stated.
"Thank you. Ok Eddy, I'm ready for your incoming Pokémon." Prof. Salem stated, which made Eddy put the two Pokéballs into the container, which vanished instantly. Prof. Salem held up the two Pokéballs that Eddy had just sent.
"Ok, see ya Prof. Salem!" Eddy waved goodbye along with the others as the screen turned black. The screen came back on with the Professor laughing nervously.
"I forgot to send Ed back his Magikarp." Prof. Salem stated as the glass container glowed again and a Pokéball appeared in it. Ed smiled and grabbed his Pokéball out of the container. The screen turned black on the videophone again.
"Alright, now lets get this show on the road. I can't wait to get my first Gym Badge!" Eddy shouted, running out of the Pokémon Center. His friends quickly followed him out of the Center. They were soon in front of the Pewter City Gym. Eddy ran up to the door only for it to be slammed in his face, making him hold it in pain.
Eddy groaned, "What is this a running gag?!" Eddy shouted.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't dorky." A voice stated.
"Kevin?! Why are you here?" Eddy growled.
"Well, I was on my way out." Kevin stated.
"HA! That means you lost your Gym Battle!" Eddy shouted, though his assumption was destroyed by Kevin holding up a Boulder badge.
"Looks like I got it before you did. Smell ya later dorks and dorkette!" Kevin laughed, as he walked off.
"That jerk I'll show him!" Eddy ran into the Gym followed by his three partners in crime. The field looked like an oasis with waterfalls streaming on the rocks. There was someone standing under the waterfall. It was a woman by the age of seventeen. She had brown hair, black eyes, she was in a poncho, and brown pants. She looked up at the three Eds.
"Hmm, so you are the new challengers?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm Eddy, and I'm here to battle the gym leader!" Eddy shouted.
"I'm the Gym Leader; the names Terra." Terra stood up. "But, I'll only battle you in this order: from tallest to shortest. And I don't think you'll be first."
Eddy growled at her comment – this wasn't the first time he was ridiculed because of his height. He started to think who would be first. He realized that Ed would be the first one, next would be Double D, Naomi, and last him.
"I'm up firstest!" Ed shouted, as he butchered the English language.
"Its pronounced first, Ed." Double D corrected. The remaining Eds and Naomi sat in the bleachers, while Ed walked up to the rock battlefield.
"Challengers go first. We'll use two Pokémon each." Terra smiled at Ed.
"Magikarp, time to battle!" Ed released his Magikarp, which made Terra look at him as if he was crazy.
"You do realize that Magikarp is a weak Pokémon?" Terra questioned his tactics.
"You will be defeated!" Ed shouted, as Magikarp had a determined face on.
"Fine by me, this should be over in about seven seconds." Terra stated. "Geodude, time to rock!"
Terra release a rock like creature with only arms, a mouth and eyes. Double D pulled out his Pokédex to examine the rock creature.
The device said: Geodude, the Rock Pokémon. It rolls along slopes in search of food. When it sleeps it buries half its body in the ground. The older it gets, the ore on its edges are worn away, making its body round and smooth.
"Fascinating," Double D muttered.
A TV screen came down from the ceiling and displayed Ed and Terra's Pokemon's power levels.
"Geodude, use Rock throw!" Terra commanded, as Geodude made rocks fall from the sky, aiming at Magikarp.
"Magikarp, use Bubblebeam at the rocks!" Ed commanded, making Magikarp blow a stream of bubbles at the rocks. The bubbles exploded on impact, destroying the incoming rocks.
"Woah, Geodude use Tackle." Terra shouted as Geodude charged at the flopping Magikarp.
"Magikarp, use Splash to bounce into the air, than counter with Bubblebeam!" Ed commanded. Magikarp's expression change to determination and bounced into the air, dodging the tackling Geodude. Magikarp did a backflip in the air and launched a stream of bubbles at the rock Pokémon. This caused the Rock Pokémon to faint from the Bubblebeam, which made Geodude's energy bar on the screen disappear, saying the words KO on Geodude's picture.
"Very nice. Onix, time the shake the field!" Terra shouted, as she called out her colossus rock snake. Eddy pulled out his Pokédex: Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon. Onix lives underground. As it grows, its body becomes darker and harder, until it's tough as diamonds. It can move as fast as fifty miles per hour.
"Magikarp, return!" Ed called back his Magikarp. "Lotad come out!" Ed called his lily-pad Pokémon.
"Onix use dig!" Terra shouted.
"Lotad, use Nature Power!" Ed commanded, which made Lotad jump and stomp at the ground hard. This caused the entire Gym to shake from the stomp.
"Why is the Gym shaking?!" Eddy shouted.
"Nature Power is based on the battle field and uses a move corresponding to the field." Double D explained. "Since this is a rock field, Nature Power is Earthquake."
Onix came out of the hole it made, moaning in pain from the Earthquake.
"Now use Absorb!" Ed commanded, which made Lotad drain all the energy from Onix. Onix fainted from the back to back attacks. The TV screen that had the stats now showed Ed, Lotad and Magikarp under bold letters that spelled out 'Winner'.
"I never thought I'd be defeated this quickly." Terra smiled and walked over to Ed. "You gave me a good time out there." Terra handed Ed a gym badge in the shape of a boulder. "Alright, black hat your up next."
"But don't you need to re-energize your Pokémon?" Double D questioned.
"Don't worry, Gym Leaders always have back-up Pokémon." Terra stated as she put the two Pokéballs that contained the weakened rock Pokémon into a device called 'Poke-Energizer'. "While my Pokémon are being healed, I can use the back ups for our battle, black hat."
"Ok," Double D walked up to the battle field.
"Sandslash, I choose you!" Terra released a brown hedgehog like creature with black eyes, and quills that were hard as stone.
"Hmm." Double D opened up his Pokédex to examine the strange Pokémon. It read: Sandslash, the Mouse Pokémon. Sandslash attacks its opponents by rolling up into a ball and body slamming them. It then slashes the stunned enemy with its claws. It can inflict great damage with its spikes.
"It looks like Sonic the Hedgehog!" Ed blurted out.
"Poliwag, this job is for you!" Double D battle cried as he released Poliwag.
"Sandslash, use Rollout!" Terra commanded.
"Sadly, wrong choice for a move." Double D replied. "Poliwag use Water Gun!" Poliwag blasted the Sandslash with high pressurized water, forcing the hedgehog Pokémon into a rock, which shattered on impact. Sandslash got up with an angry look on his face.
"I won't be beaten in a minute like the battle with Ed." Terra proclaimed. "Sandslash, use Poison Sting!"
Sandslash got on all fours, and its quills began to shoot purple needles at Poliwag.
"Poliwag use Bubble to intercept it!" Double D commanded, which made Poliwag launch a stream of bubbles at the purple needles. The attacks collided making both attacks disperse.
"Sandslash, use Double Team!" Terra commanded, which made Sandslash began to multiply all over the battle field.
"Poliwag use Bubble on all of the copies!" Double D proclaimed.
"Not this time! Sandslash use Dig!" Terra commanded, which made the real one dig a hole while the copies followed it in the hole. Poliwag looked confused, and began to look around nervously. Soon the ground burst in front of Poliwag with thousands of Sandslash that bashed it to the ground. The TV displaying the energy levels showed Poliwag's was on zero.
"Poliwag return!" Double D called back Poliwag. "You did a good job, now you may rest."
"What's wrong, thought you could win with a water type?" Terra grinned.
"I figured a gym leader of your caliber would have defensive techniques against water types." Double D stated. "Sewaddle, finish the job!" Double D battle cried once more and released Sewaddle.
"Please this will be over in seconds." Terra smiled. "Sandslash use Slash!"
Sandslash charged at Sewaddle with both claws glowing, and slashed at the bug Pokémon. Sewaddle screamed in pain from the attack and crashed into a rock.
"Sewaddle, use Energy Ball!" Double D commanded, which made Sewaddle launch a ball of green energy at the spiked-back Pokémon. The blast threw Sandslash into a rock, which knocked it unconscious. The TV showed KO over Sandslash's picture. Terra returned her Sandslash to it's Pokéball.
"Time for a little hardcore action! Aron, time to shine!" Terra released a small Pokémon with silver armor on. Double D pulled out his Pokédex once more, which said: Aron, the Iron Armor Pokémon. Aron lives deep within mountains and survives by eating iron ore. On the rare occasion that it leaves the mountains, it eats train tracks, cars, or anything else with a lot of iron. "Aron, use Mud-Slap!" Aron hurled mud at the leafy bug Pokémon.
"Sewaddle, use Energy Ball!" Double D shouted. Sewaddle launched a ball of green energy at the Aron, which deflected the mud and impacted on Aron. The TV showed Aron's health at zero, and after showed a picture of Double D with Poliwag and Sewaddle along with the word 'Winner' above it.
"Blasted out of the battle in one move?" Terra returned her Aron to it's Pokéball, and walked over to Double D. "Here you go."
"Naomi, your up." Eddy proclaimed.
"Alright," Naomi walked over to the battle field as Terra retrieved her energized Pokémon from her earlier battle with Ed. She placed the back-up Pokémon in the Poké-Energizer again. The TV now showed Naomi and Terra's pictures, in between the picture was 'VS' in bold letters.
"Geodude, come on out!" Terra released her Geodude once more.
"Snivy, come on out!" Naomi unleashed her Grass snake-Pokémon.
"Geodude use-" Terra was cut off by Naomi.
"Leaf Storm!" Naomi shouted as her Snivy launched a tornado of leaves at the Geodude, instantly knocking the Rock-Pokémon out. Terra returned her Geodude back to its Pokéball, and called out Onix, only for the same fate to befall it. The TV showed Naomi and Snivy with the word 'Winner' above it.
"Geez, what the heck man? Are they giving trainers Rare Candies or something?" Terra handed Naomi the gym badge.
"My turn, watch a pro at work." Eddy grinned and walked up to the battle field. Terra grabbed her back-up Pokémon, and walked over to the battlefield.
"Sandslash, time to get this over with!" Terra shouted as she released her spiked-mouse Pokémon.
"Shroomish, it's battle time!" Eddy shouted as he released his Shroomish. "Shroomish use Leech Seed!" Shroomish launched three seeds at Sandslash, upon impact the seeds began to spread vines around the Sandslash. "Now Shroomish use Absorb!"
"Not this time! Sandslash use Pin Missile!" Terra shouted, which made Sandslash's claws blast-spike like attacks at Shroomish. The attack exploded blasting Shroomish into a wall outside of the arena. The picture displaying Shroomish on the TV had instant KO over it. Eddy reluctantly returned Shroomish, after he was planning on riding the battle out with Shroomish.
"Vulpix, its your turn!" Eddy shouted releasing his Vulpix from its Pokéball.
"Really, a Fire Type against a Ground Type? Alright, its your funeral." Terra stated.
"Vulpix use Ember!" Eddy shouted, causing Vulpix to breath a vortex of fire, instead of small embers. The Vortex surround the Sandslash, which made the vines from the Leech Seed burn causing Sandslash to screech in pain and pass out. The screen showed Sandslash with KO over the screen.
"Woah," Terra returned her Sandslash, and threw out Aron. "Aron use Mud-Slap!"
"Vulpix use the fire vortex thingy again!" Eddy commanded.
"Fire Spin." Double D corrected. Vulpix launched that fire vortex at the mud flinging Aron, which burned the mud around Aron. This encased the Aron in hardened mud around its feet.
"Vulpix use Fire Spin!" Eddy commanded, which made Vulpix breath a fiery vortex around Aron, knocking it out instantly. The screen now showed, Eddy with Vulpix and Shroomish with the word 'Winner' above it.
"Just take the darn badge!" Terra tossed the badge at Eddy who caught it. As the four trainers began to walk out of the Gym, a paper plane hit Ed in the back of his head. He turned to pick it up off the ground, as he did he unfolded it to reveal a note:
Call me sometime. 555-3454
Xoxo Terra.
Ed looked up to see Terra waving at him cutely. Ed blushed smiling and soon ran outside to his friends who were walking to the Pokémon Center.
I know what you guys are thinking, why make a female rock Gym Leader fall for Ed? Because I think its awesome, plus I needed to make a small love joke at the end. Well enjoy your spring break if you have three weeks off like college students get. Sadly for the High School students (including me) we have one week. Man I can't wait for the summer...
