Chapter 4
So I started my investigation in Japan. I began to summon the dead whom seem to stick out or may have some connection to Kira, so mostly the souls of people who were not murdered in prison. Therefore, the first person I summoned was the only man so far to die from something other than a heart attack but by getting ran over by a bus.
I ordered Takuo Shibuimaru to answer my call. A man covered in chains appeared. I looked at him in disgust. "I summon you for one reason. You are the only Kira victim not to die from a heart attack but a car crash. Tell me about the night you died."
"I'm not going to tell you nothing- wait, I was killed by Kira?"
"Yes and you will follow my order or I personally will made sure that your punishment becomes more painful."
"The truck seem to come out of nowhere." He rambled quickly. "It was a weeknight I suppose, I died on the street, there was only me and my friends at the time and that b- girl. It was empty but there was nobody there to know about that. She yelled but there were hardly any people out to hear her anyways. Her damn fault for being alone. Her fault I'm dead. The only thing I remember at the time was the Nice store open. Don't know how Kira would've known what was happening."
I banished him back to the fields of punishment. I sat down taking deep breaths. It is extremely difficult to summon spirits from their torture mainly because their spirit continuously trying to break free from the summon and the law of the underworld which forbidden any relief to the wicked souls from their sentence.
The following days after talking to Takuo I stood watch over the convenience store Nice taking down facts of who visit or pass by the place at night. Lets just say it was quite a list. A yawn escaped my lips. Haven't been able to sleep either. Never really been able to. I've been having dreams of the mysterious teenager, my Father, Thanatos, and darkness. I don't know why I keep on having vision of them though. The cold voice would continue to say "soon Nico," "visit" and "see".
A week past, some days I would summon the dead other days I would read their files. So far what I was able to notice was the typical times of deaths. They only occurred in the morning and from the evening to late at night. My jetlag or shadow-lag help me stay awake when the pages began to appear in the folder.
I then began to take trips to the site of deaths where Kira was killing the victims outside of prison. I know that one day he would mess up and he would kill close to the convenience store where I could narrow down even more to where he lived. However, a side affect of doing multiple small shadow travels was the need to take lots of naps. It was yesterday that things changed- besides switching my stay to the 6th apartment of a dead man.
It was Kira. Kira began to become unpredictable. The time of their death were no longer limited to the early morning, late nights, and weekends. Kira was killing on a schedule of every hour. Each death I had checked if there was a pattern in hopes of finding a hint about Kira. All I knew was that it was becoming harder to narrow down which victims would give a hint about Kira. That was a week ago. Yesterday was much worse. I threw up after reading the gruesome reports on how the prison victims died. It is odd but Kira was no longer killing them with heart attacks but made them preform their own deaths. Some of the deaths were heart attacks and others were sick twisted actions before their body gave up and finally died. I had a hard time believing a mortal was behind this. Not even the monsters would play with their victims like this. One died of blood loss after writing on the walls with blood trying to draw some thing but never completed it.
The worst fact about this is that most of them do not have memories of dying. I learned of this when I called on the first victim that day. The following days I had to constantly summon each and every single one that died. Some had remember dying and others didn't . However, the ones that died of a heart attack do not remember ever feeling it. They felt a compulsion, an urgency to do something but they can't recall what it was.
I stood up and began to walk to the growing shadow needing to leave the apartment to summon the next victim on my list to summon. Kiichiro Osoreda. The second victim of Kira to not die of a heart attack but again by a car. Interesting. I step out to the corner of a dark metro station to transport me to the place where he was killed. What? I can't constantly used my powers to transport myself and a metro is the easiest way when I need to do a summoning.
"Sir, this boy has made an appearance to each site where a Kira murder has occurred including ones that were not yet determined as Kira victims."
L looks at the screen where it was paused. The boy was wearing an aviator jacket with a black t-shirt underneath along with a chain belt holding up his black pants. He had shaggy black hair, a pair of glasses hiding the dark shadows under his onyx black eyes, and pale skin.
"Most interesting. Watari continue to keep an eye on the boy."
"Yes Sir."
L continued to look at the screen 'could it be that you are Kira? Or is there a bigger game at play?'
While riding the metro the air began to shimmer.
'Gods not again'
I stretch my arm as if I yawn cutting the Iris message before the connection was made. It was the third time today. The twelfth in the past five days.
I tapped my silver ring. 'Who is trying to contact me?'
My eyebrows furrowed. I stand up and exit to the place where the area that the Kira victim was killed.
'Oh no' I run away from the busy walkway and into an alley. The air began to shimmer and the image of Annabeth appeared. Her blonde hair was tangled and her eyes puffy. The most important thing was that she had a frown on her face that was twisted in anger.
"Nico di Angelo!" I wince at her yell. I gesture for her to be silent or lower her voice but she continued to scream.
"I have been trying to contact you! Do you know how many drachama I went through for you to cancel the connection?"
"This is really not a good time-"
"Not a good time! Percy is missing! Have you seen him? Is he with you?"
"What? He disappeared?" My face became ashen. 'Its just like what happened to Jason the praetor- wait. Jason is leader of the Romans, Percy is leader of the Greeks. The backbone of both camps are gone. Who could have done this and why? Damn it! I am still on a quest. I can't stop and go searching for him.'
She gives a nod and thankfully lowered her voice. "I had hope that he was with you- "
"Listen Annabeth, I am currently on a quest that nobody knows about except my Father, Chiron and Percy. I swear to keep on a look out for Percy but-bye." I swipe the connection and pull the shadows closer to me hiding me in the darkness. I felt an aura of death similar to Thanatos and had a feeling that someone was either looking for me or listening in on my conversation but not with good intentions.
It soon disappeared. I run to the street but no one was to be seen.
After the phone call with Annabeth I decided it would be too risky to summon him today. Which is a pity since I feel more energize today than usual since it's so exhausting to summon criminals from eternal punishment because they cannot have the offering only be tortured to taste.
Oh, I'm up next.
"Hello what would you like to order?"
"Hello. I would like to order three happy meals please?"
"huh, oh um sure that will be x yens."
I hand over the black credit card and wait for my order. A large hand tapped me on the shoulder. I turn around to face a bulky man and see him take out his police badge.
"You are under arrest by the Japanese police force" I survey the room taking account of how many officers are in the restaurant and my chances of escape. I gaze back at the man.
"Hm, how about no?"
I push the man in front of me to the other police officers in disguise and run out the door. Honesty, I am no stranger to officers after refusing to stay at camp and living on my own, but I soon realized something. After around 6 minutes of constant running and taking different twist and turns in alleys, stores, roads, and parks I notice they still somehow manage to be waiting to ambush me in the direction I am running.
"Di immortals!" 'How are they able to predict where I am running?' I turn around and felt pain from my face. A distant cry of 'I got him' was barely heard as I became unconscious.
