Who knew, Andy thought as she made her way towards her cabin after the campfire, that one day she would be forced to face former her best friend again after leaving without an explanation.
To make things better, there was the new prophecy. Which she was part of. Again.
Andy sighed and opened her cabin door.
In a way, it was a good thing that Jason lost his memory. If he hadn't... well, that would have been a disaster. Andy had a brief idea of how it would be to have your best friend go missing out of the blue. When Luke Castellan had left almost five years ago, Andy had been distraught. Her fatal flaw was personal loyalty and Luke had been her friend. At least, she had assumed he had been until he betrayed them. But still, whatever the situation, she would not have liked it if Jason had just left. She would have been ruined.
Andy and Jason had always balanced each other. He had a very serious personality, where as she was fun loving. Jason had always made sure that Andy didn't go beyond the limits with her pranks and Andy made sure Jason had some fun in his life. They were inseparable and they liked it that way. Jason was her only companion on some days when she was feeling particularly down. They had helped each other. If one was feeling down, the other knew just how the cheer them up.
She missed the good old days when she didn't have to worry about anything like prophecies and saving the world. That life was simple. She hadn't had to worry about things like Titans and fighting armies. All she'd had to worry about was training to keep herself alive, and, of course, the next prank she'd play on Octavian. Andy smiled drily as she thought of all the various pranks she had played on him. But her smile faded when she remembered the problem at hand. She was going on another quest early the next day. To make things more complicated, her companions were Jason, Piper and Leo.
The prophecy rang in her mind as she slipped under the warm blankets, dressed in her favourite pair of little mermaid pyjamas that Sally had bought for her a year ago.
Child of lightning beware the earth,
The giants' revenge, seven shall birth,
The child of sea shall accompany thee,
To help retrieve your memories,
Forge and dove shall break the cage,
Death unleash through Hera's rage.
She sighed again and called 'lights out'. She hadn't felt this lonely for a long time. The last time had been the first couple of weeks at Camp Half-Blood, when her father had claimed her... again. She hadn't had any friends at that time, and had terribly missed her home. Then, she'd received her quest and become good friends with Annabeth and Grover. She'd grown used to life at Camp Half-Blood. It became her new home, and her former friends were nothing but a memory. She finally accepted the fact that she would not see any of them again. Now, if she returned to Camp Jupiter, it would raise a lot of questions she couldn't answer.
But today after seeing Jason again, she remembered the good old times at Camp Jupiter. She mentally shook her head to clear her thoughts. She had quest tomorrow and she needed a good night's sleep.
For the next few hours, Andy rolled from side to side trying to go to sleep.
She couldn't.
Every time she closed her eyes, memories from her past seemed to haunt her. The relaxing evenings at camp Jupiter after a tiring day of training. Days spent with Jason fooling around. The walks around New Rome as she watched families. And her favourite part: watching the sunset every day from the steps of the Temple of Jupiter.
She sat up in her bed, realising that she would never fall asleep.
After getting dressed, she opened the door and stepped out, sending a silent prayer to Hermes that she wouldn't get caught by the harpies, and made her way toward the beach. The water always calmed her down.
However, when Andy finally reached the beach, she was surprised to see someone already there. It was Jason, of course. She'd recognize him anywhere. For a minute, she considered turning around and going back to her cabin. It was a bad idea anyway, and she was too exhausted to face Jason, even if it was mildly comforting to know where he was again.
She stood there for what felt like hours contemplating her options. She didn't want to go back to her stuffy cabin where the ghosts of her past haunted her. Finally, the temptation of talking to Jason alone without any interruption won over. It didn't matter that she was too tired to face him. She hadn't seen her best friend for years, and even if he had lost his memory, he was still the boy she grew up with, the boy with whom she had shared her secrets with, and the boy whom she had abandoned.
Andy knew a little bit about what guilt felt like. She'd felt guilty when Bianca had died. She'd felt guilty when Annabeth had taken the knife that was meant for her. She had definitely felt guilty when she had been too ashamed to call Tyson her brother. But this was way worse than any of that. As she watched him sitting on the beach, looking towards the horizon, wind ruffling his hair and features relaxed, it was almost more than she could handle. She had completely abandoned the place she'd called home for nearly five years. She had abandoned all the people she had considered her family. She had abandoned Jason.
Sure, she'd had no choice, but she had never really dwelt upon how they might have felt, waking up one morning to find her gone.
During her first few days at camp she had mourned the loss of her home and her family, but she'd never felt guilty for leaving. She had considered it her duty, and if she'd learned anything in Camp Jupiter, it was that Romans never shied away from their duty. So, she had done what the gods had asked her to do. She had fulfilled her duty for at great price and gave up the life she'd known. But now, as she stood on the beach of Camp Half-Blood, she felt acutely out of place. Seeing Jason today had awakened a part of her that she had forgotten.
Her footsteps made no noise as she walked on the sand of the beach toward Jason. Breathing in the salty air, which instantly calmed her down, she stopped beside him.
"Can I join you?" she asked softly. Jason jumped slightly, his hand moving towards his pocket, where he no doubt had his golden coin, and looked up at her. The clear blue colour of his eyes made her catch her breath.
"Yeah," he said, his voice breaking her out of her stupor. She sent a half-hearted smile his way and took a seat beside him.
"Couldn't sleep?" she asked, breaking the comfortable silence. Jason tilted his head and met her eyes.
"No. You?" he asked.
"I couldn't either," she replied. Jason turned back towards the horizon, his eyes troubled. Though none of it was shown on his face, Andy knew exactly how to read him. She considered asking him what was bothering him, then quickly dismissed the idea. Andy turned back to the ocean, sighing inaudibly as she felt all the tension from the tiring day leaving her shoulders and relaxed. She closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of the salty sea. She felt completely at ease sitting beside Jason, relaxing after a very stressful day. It was almost like they were back in Camp Jupiter, before she had left and things got complicated.
When she opened her eyes again, she found Jason staring at her, his expression betraying nothing. She frowned.
"What? Is there something on my face or something?" she asked, moving her hands self-consciously toward her face. Jason blushed slightly and shook his head.
"Nothing... I just..." he paused, a familiar troubled expression appearing on his face, then he shook his head again. "It's nothing," he said after a moment of silence.
Andy's frown deepened, but she decided not to comment on his odd behavior.
"What do you think of the prophecy?" he asked, breaking the silence once again. Andy hesitated. She knew what the prophecy meant. Well, the two lines that concerned her, anyway. She knew she would have to tell him about their history and Camp Jupiter eventually, or at least help him regain some of his memory. But she couldn't tell him that.
"I'm not sure, really," she said. It was the truth, after all: she really wasn't sure as to what the prophecy actually meant. The only thing they were sure of was the fact that it had something to do with the new great prophecy. "Prophecies often have double meanings. Don't worry about it too much. Just keep a clear head and you'll do great," she said, smiling reassuringly.
Jason nodded, his stiff shoulders relaxing slightly. He turned to face the ocean again. After a while, he stood up.
"I think I'm going back to my cabin now," he said, yawning slightly at the end of his sentence. She nodded and flashed him a smile.
"Goodnight, Jason."
"Goodnight, Andy."
