Chapter 4: Out of the Nightmare
Kain:
"What do you mean you brought a Day Class student here," Ruka said with hostility. I didn't realize my actions until I was staring into Ruka's gorgeous yet angry eyes I looked up at the direction of my room where Mika was, resting peacefully.
"I was protecting her."
"So!? That doesn't mean you bring her here." I looked away like a child trying to avoid his mother's gaze. I usually am the rational one. "I would expect this from Aido, never from you."
My eyes shot up and immediately looked over to Aido walking up to the staircase. I bypassed the peeved vampiress using my speed to appear in front of him before he could reach the top step and grabbed my cousin by the collar.
"Do. Not. Touch. Her," I said firmly.
"I was only going to make her more comfortable."
"No."
"Okay," he said backing away. I focused my hearing, listening to her even and light breaths, as she slept soundly. I wouldn't let anything or anyone disturb her. Why is she so special to me?
"She doesn't belong here Akatsuki." I looked up to see Kaname coming down the stairs. I immediately walked over to explain the situation.
Takuma came out with a tray of tea, warranting an eyebrow raise from our president. I left with Kaname to explain the situation.
Once we were in the private space of his room, I filled him in on everything….including my secret rendezvous with her in the music room.
"Does she know about us," Kaname asked after I delivered all the details.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes…maybe…I'm not sure. I never told her about us and she never expressed having any knowledge of our existence." He gave the same enigmatic stare that fails in revealing his thoughts.
"You may go and watch over her." I turned around and stopped at the door by his words, "You know there is a possibility her memory may be erased," he said.
"I know," I replied solemnly and continued to walk out. I walked to my room and gently opened the door. I gazed at the feminine figure that lay in my bed, covered in a blanket. I went and sat on the bed next to her. I removed a wispy tendril of her caramel hair away from her face. Her calm expression was a complete contrast from the terrified look she had earlier. I would massacre anyone who dared to harm her. I shook my head as the thought crept into my mind. I don't know where this newfound possessiveness came from, but I knew that it could become problematic. I was already getting chewed out by Ruka and Kaname for even bringing her here. My hand rested on the pillow near her head. I looked down at her creamy cheeks. I finally noticed a slight olive tone to her complexion. I grazed her cheek with my finger. My gaze travelled to her un-pierced neck…she was very tempting. I pushed the unusual though out of my mind as raised from my position.
As I walked out, her wonderful scent was getting fainter as I walked downstairs where everyone was waiting for the verdict. Takuma was sipping tea, while Ruka sat with her arms crossed in a pouty manner. Rima and Shiki were sharing pocky as usual, but something was missing….. "Where's Hanabusa?"
Mika:
The glare of the stage lights blinded and blurred my vision, as I found myself in the Teatro Massimo Bellini Opera House. I was on stage in a fluffy white dress, sitting and listening to a beautifully perfect voice sing, "Quando Men Vo", La Boheme by Puccini. I searched for the familiar voice and found an angelic figure singing to the empty opera house. Her light, curly hair shone brightly in the stage lights. I could only see the back of the figure, dressed in a long cream gown, but I knew the voice… "Mother". I tried to get up and travel across the long stage to where my mother's figure stood, but the distance grew the closer I got. I decided to run, almost tripping over the large cloudlike dress. The voice started sounding farther away. "Mom….Mom!...Mommy don't go!" My surroundings soon grew dark, and I was alone. My body felt chilled and I buried my face in my hands. I heard faint panting and looked around, not realizing I had collapsed. The panting became louder and tried running faster and faster. Glowing red eyes began to follow me and I tripped. I wanted to scream, but my throat was too terrified as the pants became louder and louder…
I woke up with a gasp, slightly sweating and covered in a blanket. I looked around for any sign of familiarity. The only thing that was familiar was "Ave Maria" being somberly sung from a stereo system. I was in a large bed with an elegant red duvet. The room itself was very elegant and classic, like a palace. Across the room there was another bed, but messier and had books scattered around it. The side of the room I was on was neat and well kept. You could tell two completely opposite people shared this room. I sat for a moment trying to think of the last thing I remembered before everything went blank. I was coming back from town….and I made it to campus, but I was running from something. There were red eyes, then FIRE…..and Kain.
Kain. His eyes were…..
I suddenly heard voices coming from outside the door. I panicked and immediately hid back under the covers. Where am I? When the voices passed I hopped out of bed almost tripping over my shoes and bag. I hurried to put on my shoes and grab my bag. I heard the toilet flush in the room and immediately hopped back in bed hoping whoever was in the room didn't hear me move. I tried to calm my breathing to a calm pace, as I heard the water running moments before the door opened. My body felt heavy sinking into the large bed like it was going to rest all night, but my mind could only think about leaving. The moments felt like hours until I heard the door close shut. I waited five beats, before I hopped out of the bed for the las time and grabbed my bag. Pressing my ear to the door, I didn't hear anyone immediately walking by, so I took a chance and slowly turned the doorknob. I inched the door open and peaked out. Now's my chance! I slipped through the halfway opened door, and quietly closed it. I turned around quickly and bumped directly into a chest blocking my path. I looked up to see an extremely beautiful boy with a halo of messy gold curls and the brightest, baby-blue eyes I've ever seen. There was something so familiar about him, but I was more worried about being caught.
"Mika, where are you going, my dear," he said in a soothing voice. While his voice was supposed to be soothing, my body panicked as I hugged my briefcase to calm my heart.
"I-I….I'm s-s-," I stuttered, "I'm leaving," I said quietly.
"You can't leave, sweetheart. We don't know if you're head is better from that nasty fall," he started to lead me back to the room, by placing his hand on the small of my back. I tried to muster a response, but I froze when he mentioned a fall. I had flashes of the nightmare I had while sleeping. The eyes and the running….and the FIRE. I didn't know I had moved from his grasp, until I was running down the hall trying to figure out where to go.
"Hey wait, Mika," he called out behind me. How did he know my name? The fear I had earlier that night came flooding back as I remembered the man with shaggy hair and red eyes. The presence of the beautiful dorm student triggered the chasing feeling of the monster. I kept feeling like he was getting closer, until I found where the stairs. "Mika, wait! I'm not going to hurt you." I felt myself panicking to leave. I'm going to get in trouble for being here. I know it. I just have to leave. I can't get in trouble. I found the stairs tried my hardest to ignore the stairs of the Night Class students who knew I didn't belong there.
"Mika," called a familiar voice as I reached the bottom. I looked around through my messy hair sprouting from my ponytail that was very close to becoming undone.
I saw Kain-senpai near an elegant couch with other extremely beautiful students.
Kain:
Mika came rushing down the stairs clutching her belongings. I heard Hanabusa behind her coming right down after her. I walked around to meet her as she saw me with a frightened expression. She ran right to my side hiding behind me. "Hanabusa, what's going on?"
"All I did was use the bathroom. Next thing I know she's awake, bumping into me in the hall."
I looked down at Mika's small figure tucked behind my arm. I faced her and tried to calm her as she began to hyperventilate.
"Mika, calm down," I said looking into her eyes. She looked so scared, like a lost rabbit in a den of wolves.
"K-Kain-s-sempai?"
"Yes, Mika. You're safe now."
"W-where….," she looked around frightened at everything. She obviously was overwhelmed by her unfamiliar surroundings. I held her delicate wrist and felt her pulse rapidly thumping. I gently guided her face to look in my eyes.
"You are in the Moon Dorm. I brought you here after you fainted." She shuddered underneath my touch, but her pulse slowed slightly. Her eyes met mine making my insides warmer as a calm yet sad expression crept on her face.
"I have go home," she said softly. My heart sank with those words. I hadn't realized my hand still cupped her cheek. She wobbled slightly and I caught her by her waist. She was in no condition to walk all the way across campus to the Sun Dorms. Some of her sheet music came spilling from her bag. I held onto her wobbling body until she stood upright. Mika fumbled to maintain the spilt contents of her bag as she tried to head towards the door.
"I have to go, I-I'm sorry," she said hastily. I followed her trying to calm her down, but she was out of the door. It was so quick I couldn't even comprehend it. I don't want her to leave.
"Well that was awkward," said Rima. I realized I was staring at the door and looked back at my companions. I completely forgot they were there. Ruka had her arms crossed in the opposite couch from where Mika laid while Takuma was sipped on some tea.
"She didn't even want any tea. I prepared a cup for her," Ichijo said in a disappointed tone.
"What's her problem? She didn't even thank you for saving her life. Ungrateful," Ruka scoffed. I couldn't let Mika go out by herself. I was worried about her fainting on the way back. I left the dorm, keeping my distance.
Mika:
I power-walked as fast as I could, trying to make my way on the other side of the campus to the Day Class dorms. I held my bag across my chest, my hair wildly bouncing and blurring my vision. It wasn't real. It wasn't real. It wasn't REAL! I chanted to myself over and over again. It was something out of a horror movie. Those red eyes….HE had them too. I couldn't wrap my thoughts around the possibility or reasoning behind it. When I looked into his eyes, I saw the red. It was like the monster was following me, and taking up every once of my conscious. And then I remembered seeing fire coming from Kain-senpai and his eyes red just like the monster's.
"Mika!"
"D'Amore- san!" I heard Yuki and Zero call my name as I approached the Sun Dormitories. They ran towards me and I immediately let go of the air trapped in my lungs.
"Yuki. Zero." I said in a surprisingly calm yet hoarse voice.
"Was that you that screamed," Zero demanded. I couldn't tell them what I witnessed; they would think I'm crazy. I tried to form a small smile, but my eyes betrayed me as the tears started flowing.
"Mika, what's wrong," Yuki said touching my arm, "did something happen?" I shook my head no. I couldn't tell her. It was too much. I tried to blink away the tears, but they kept on pouring out of me. Why am I so incapable of keeping myself together? I started walking towards the dorm, passing by the both of them, until Zero pulled on me.
"D'Amore, if something happened you have to tell us," he said sternly. I slipped my arm from his grasp and ran inside the girl's dorm.
I made it upstairs to my room and locked my door shut. Everything was dizzy and blurry and crashing all at once. I collapsed on my bed and began to breathe erratically. My senses felt overloaded and my chest felt like it was going to cave in. I never wanted to wake up this morning.
I woke up at four in the morning, without realizing I passed out after my panic attack. I went to my bathroom and saw the blotchy redness my tears created.
Kain:
I followed behind her, until I saw Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu approach her. I hid behind a tree and listened to their conversation. Mika gave shaky responses, but managed to avoid their questions. Where were they when there were Level E vampires around? I heard them talking about the incident.
"There were remnants by the front gate of muliple Level E vampires being destroyed," Yuki stated.
"Those Night Class monsters must've taken care of it," Zero replied.
"Do you think Mika was there? She seemed really shook up."
"I don't know."
"I'm glad she's alright. She might not have had the best time with her family. She always comes back so sad, but she never really wants to talk to anyone about it." A dull pain hit my chest, like someone threw a rock at my heart. She was always so happy whenever I saw her. Shy, but still cheerful. I stayed still, waiting for the prefects to leave, trying my hardest to make sure that vampire prefect Kiryu couldn't detect my presence. When I couldn't sense them anymore, I walked tried to figure out which room was Mika's. I suddenly caught a whiff of her scent from an open window. What I heard broke my heart even more. Little sobs were coming from her room, like she was crying, I couldn't tell where she was in the room, so I took a chance and climbed the tree next to the building, used the branch to see inside the room. I hoped on the ledge of the window, sitting on the edge. I could hear her breathy sobs. I didn't want to frighten her so I stayed on the edge of the window listening to her crying until they were getting softer. I moved past the curtains peaking into the room to find Mika on her bed curled in a ball gripping a pillow. She cried herself to sleep. She would occasionally give a small 'hic' as she breathed, but she was fast asleep shivering a little bit. Her bed was smaller than mine with a quilted blanket at the edge of the bed. I took the quilt and placed it over her shaking body. Her face was red and swollen from the crying she did. I don't know what happened prior to the attack, but she's so still like she could sleep forever. The back of my hand gently brushed against her cheek. I let my fingers linger in her hair for a moment before my inner restraint forced me to pull it back. "Good night Mika," I said to her sleeping form. Part of me wanted to hear her answer back in her soft voice but I knew she wouldn't answer back. I lept out of the window and headed back to the Moon Dorms.
When I got back I was greeted with anticipating stares. Kaman had joined everyone and sat in a chair at the end of the coffee table. "I take it D'Amore-san returned to her room safely," he said.
"Yes," I answered. He sipped his tea with content. I was about to make my way to my room when he called out my name.
"Akatsuki," he lifted his hand, holding a piece of paper. I took the paper and examined it. It was sheet music that Mika left behind.
