Chapter four
Severus Snape and the book.
It was midnight when Rose crept out of bed after waking up from a terrible nightmare leaving the scare Rose had inherited aching in pain.
Minerva had woken when the wards alerted her to there being some disruption in Lotus house. Quickly slinking away in cat form she made her way to where she found Rose sitting by the pound, where fish swam lazily.
Remaining in the shadows Minerva looked and assessed the situation.
Ms Potter's eyes appeared to be bloodshot, her cheeks tear stained. Nightmares perhaps?
She was about to act when Mr Diggory came out.
'Nightmares?' he asked calmly.
Minerva watched silently, Ms Potter had yet to answer. She only became as stiff as Minerva herself had been eleven years ago sitting on that stone wall all day…
'Hey, I promise, I'm not going to hurt you… Our mothers used to spend time together,' Mr Diggory explained. The professor nodded silently, indeed. She remembered clearly Mrs Diggory being a large part of Lily's life at Hogwarts. Especially after the fall out with Severus, that had eventually led to James and Lily getting married.
A few minutes later Rose fell asleep a Minerva made herself visible, turning back to human again.
'You managed the situation wonderfully Mr Diggory,' Professor McGonagall whispered giving a rare smile.
He nodded and gently handed Rose over to the temporary head of house.
'I'll talk to the other prefects in the morning… we could organize something,' Cedric whispered almost to himself.
'It will be interesting to see how our schedules will work out…' Hermione commented. When the group of three had gathered in the common room that morning.
Rose nodded a little biting her lower lip nervously, it was the first day of the new term…
Ginny smiled nervously, 'Rose you have already managed to go through this once, shouldn't be that hard the second time around.'
Rose eat very little for breakfast, especially after receiving her schedule.

'This is only a temporary schedule you would have if you were Gryffindors,' Professor McGonagall explained aloud so everyone at the table could hear.
Rose studied her schedule, the class shifted throughout the week, Tuesday's would have Herbology first, there were two class that acted differently the first was astronomy that would always fall after the regular class on Fridays, and after nightfall, and the other was broom flying which occurred after classes just after dinner before sunset every Wednesday
After breakfast was done, Rose clung closely to Ginny, as Hermione had another schedule set as a second-year student.
It was Ginny, Rose, and Astoria Greengrass that made there way down to the dungeons.
Where they sat with the Gryffindors, in the midsection of the Potions classroom, his presence alone inspires silence.
'Wands away! Get your books out, there will be little foolish wand waving !' Professor said emotionlessly as he entered. As last year, he started with roll call,
Soon he reached. Her name.
'Rose Lil-' his face had ghostly white, 'Rose Lillian Potter,' the potions master's gaze meet Rose's emerged green eyes, giving her a distinctly uncomfortable feeling, there was a cold sadness in Professor Snape's eyes. The eye contact just lasted for a second before he continued.
When everyone was done he started his lecture.
'You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion- making, ' he continued. He spoke in barely a few whispers, however every student caught every word. Reminding Rose, that for all his faults, he had the potential to become a great teacher. Even though he was far from the skill Professor McGonagall held in her classes.
'I do not expect many of you will believe this is magic, and even fewer will ever truly understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses… I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death - if you are not as big as dunderheads as I usually have to teach.'
More silence meet at the end of his speech
After a moment they were sorted into groups of three, and they got to work on brewing a simple potion to cure boils.
Rose opined her book to the appendix then found the correct page for the cure (*1)

As the class got busy, Professor Severus Snape wandered through the room checking on the progress. As usual, the vast majority of the potions where absolutely pitiful, and was keen to point out the fact to the Gryffindor students.
There was one table though that kept a close eye on, the table with the Rose Lillian Potter.
Ms. Potter was an exact clone of Lily.
Her potions skills were exceptional, guiding her two house maits, Ms Greengrass, and Ms Weasley through the instructions.
There were a few mistakes she had that warranted to second-year students as it took several years to adapt to potion making… His eyes drifted to a drawer in his desk, one that had not been opened in many years.
Rose was acutely aware that professor Snape was watching her, though her focus was on getting the potion done. It was simple enough to get through as long as you keep track of what steep you were on.
"Ms. Williams! You dunderhead! The instructions tell you to add Snake Fangs first, or are you illiterate," Professor Snape barked when he came up to the Gryffindor table with a
brown-haired girl that reminded Rose a little of Neville Longbottom.
With a wave of his wand, the fumes vanished from the girls cauldron. As did the sound of the bubbling liquid.
'Ten points from Gryffindor, you will start over Ms. Williams, and get it done correctly this time. Understood?'
The brown haired Gryffindor looked ready to break into tears as she looked and made her way back over to the sink with her cauldron, looking like she wanted to turn invisible along with two other Gryffindor students she was working with.
Rose then noticed a girl behind her earth green eyes looking wide-eyed at the professor, she was wearing a Gryffindor uniform, and kept her book bag closeby
Next to her was a blond Gryffindor boy, with for doe brown eyes, the third was a shy looking red-haired boy with emerald green eyes.
'Rose!' Ginny hissed out quickly when the cauldron almost bubbled over, the group of three managed to recover their work
It the end of class professor Snape instructed to fill a vial with the potion produced, before dismissing the class once again his cold gaze meet Rose's, 'Ms Potter, please remain.'
With a confused and nervous gaze she nodded.
Ginny took hold of Rose's hand, 'Don't worry Rose, I will be one the other side of the door and won't go anywhere until your meeting is done.'
After the class had left, Rose and Severus where left alone.
'It was your mother who inspired me to become a potions master,'he started after while in total silence, 'She could have become a teacher herself if had been given the time.'
He opened the drawer he had been eyeing, removing an old textbook, then placed it in front of Rose, 'This belonged to your mother, I expect you to take great care when you handle it, and that nothing happens to it. Use it well… you are dismissed.'
Rose left silently with the book on her arms, she released a breath she hadn't realized she held, for that whole time. She felt like she would be attacked, despite how ill logical that was with last years revelations.
She meet Ginny and Astoria outside the door and then they quickly ran to Transfiguration.
When they were intercepted by the familiar appearance of Slytherin robes, combed blond hair, and an arrogant grin.
Rose became pale and started to quiver a bit, her mind began drifting back. Her uncle's treatment of her and Harry, then Lockheart, the two memories refused to leave her alone.
'Well well, still think you are special Potter,' Malfoy spat.
'Leave Malfoy, you have no business here,' Astoria sneered after Ginny tried to get Rose to calm down a little.
'Your father would be interested to hear how you have become a blood traitor Greengrass.'
'I- I do not care what my father thinks, I am my own person.'
No one noticed Ms Williams sneak into the classroom or when professor McGonagall arrived on the scene in time to see a burst of red light and Rose falling to the ground, and Mr. Malfoy laughing, a cold, cruel noise that did not belong to a child.
The laugh was cut short when Draco found himself frozen stiff.
'MR MALFOY!' Professor McGonagall shouted, 'You're expected to report to my office after you have been dismissed from classes. Ms. Greengrass, Ms. Weasley, remain here with Ms. Potter, I'll return shortly. '
With this Professor McGonagall returned to her classroom here, coming back a moment later.
She found Ms Potter still laying on the stone floor in a fetal position, clutching an old book, her breaths sharp and rigid.
Minerva quickly instruct Ms Greengrass and Ms Weasley to stay behind her, lifting Rose off the ground, despite being well cared for, the girl was still dreadfully underweight.
She quickly moved through corridors, eventually reaching the hospital wing… where Madam Pomfrey where treating a number of other patients.
'More attacks?' asked the the Hogwarts healer, 'There have already been two petrifications today.'
Minerva placed Rose gently into a nearby empty bed. Oddly enough, the same bed she had been in during her last visit.
'P- Professor.' came a small voice of one of the students that had followed.
the two adults turned their attention to the two first years, both bore frightened and concerned expression.
'W… will we be safe?' Ginny continued, her doe brown eyes drifting to the resting form of Rose, as if really asking 'Will Rose be safe?'
Minerva knelt down to their eye level, 'I promise you both, that will do everything I can to make sure these attacks come to an end.'
Her voice had become soft and gentle, a rarity compared to the stern way she usually upheld herself and her tone of voice. She had changed both as required of her in the position she was in. After all, if done incorrectly, Transfiguration could lead to being wounded or in the worst case scenarios…
The matron nodded her head, before turning attention to her newest patient, 'Can someone please report what has happened regarding Ms Potter.'
'I'm afraid that Mr Malfoy took an opportunity to hurt her. Though I do not know what spell he used, my guess would be the severing charm. As you can see from the results.'
Madam pomfrey nodded and started her diagnostic, with the book removed, it was easy to see that Rose's Hogwarts uniform had been torn. And judging from the blood, a flesh wound had been torn open as well. The results of a low powered and unpracticed severing charm, it was not uncommon among pure-blood families to practice more dangerous spells, regardless of the risks.
Ushering the Deputy and the first year students out, Madam Pomfrey got to work by vanishing Rose's Robes, revealing a large cut, going from her upper shoulder down across her chest and leading down to her upper rib cage.
The bleeding needed to be stopped first. Thus a towel was summoned and it was gently laid over the wound and even pressure was added, during the process, the towl had to replaced several times with a new towel due the amount of blood that was coming out of the wound.
After the bleeding had stopped, bandages were gathered as well, that where coated in a thin layer of Aloe Vera gel, for its anti-inflammatory and (*2) analgesic properties.
Once sealed, Fish liver oil,and blood replenishment potion were prepared.
The fish liver oil was to supply low calcium levels, the blood replacement potions to replace the large amount of blood that had been lost.
Then, after all that ,all that was left was to let Rose rest.
After classes were over Hermione, Neville, Ginny, and Astoria came to visit where they learned that Rose wouldn't wake up till afternoon the next day.
The four of them stayed a little while Hermione talking about homework, and venting frustration over Professor Snape and how dreadful Professor Lockhart proved to be.
'Honestly, that man is so egotistical, and absolutely useless! Not one question was on that test was of practical use!'
The others nodded.
'I didn't feel safe with him teaching,' Ginny added, 'I felt his gaze on me half the time… Hermione, we need to start the defence club sometime soon.'
The youngest Weasley didn't dare tell the rest of the story… where not for Percy and professor McGonagall.
It was only when Madam Pomfrey noted the time, that the four students left.
With Neville once again leaving a small bouquet of white and yellow Roses. Ginny left her a stack of notes from the days classes.
As predicted, Rose woke up during the lunch hour, Feeling very faint, weak, and very cold.
The first thing she could have sworn seeing was wisp of red hair leaving through the doors. 'Ginny?'
She then turned face the bedside table the bouquet to the side though was a single pink rose,
Much to her relief she also found the book Professor Snape had given her.
She opened it gently, on the back cover in cursive writing was:
Property of Lily Evans.
Gryffindor House.
The pages where already yellow, worn and torn at fringes.
Rose was surprised to see notes littered the pages as well as some of the original text crossed out entirely replaced with different instructions and notes to go with them, rendering all the text difficult to read.
It did not take long for Rose to decide to rewrite the changes in a fresh notebook…once she could get a hold of one.
'Oh thank Merlin!' came a familiar voice of the Hogwarts Healer.
Rose turned to face the matriarch.
'Please stay calm and rest, absolutely do not strain yourself, you still have a fever that started about midnight a savre,' she explained removing the book from Rose's hands, and placing it back on the bed side table where at had been.
Removing her wand from her robes Madam Pomfrey flicked her wand, in front of her floated a dark red stable forty-three, 'Your temperature has gone down a little, but I'm afraid we can't let you go yet.'
It was a logical conclusion that the fever had been caused by the blood loss, Madam Pomfrey though suspected other elements were at play on the magical level, though no evidence existed one way or the other.
Meanwhile, elsewhere Ginny and Hermione just got started in a meeting with Professor McGonagall.
