It was a beautiful morning when Tony awoke in his apartment by the sun shining on his face. He refused to open his eyes quite yet, wanting to relish the last few moments of peace he would have for the day. Suddenly his alarm blared and his eyes snapped open. He blearily stared at the digital numbers that was murder on his eyes this early in the morning and slammed his hand on the off button.

Fighting back a yawn, the young agent sat up in his head and scratched his head. His eyes were sleepy and his normally perfect hair was mussed from sleep. He pushed himself off the bed and stood up, slowly making his way to the bathroom. Everything around him seemed loud and bright and he grumbled tiredly to himself about going to bed earlier and taking a day off for once.

As he splashed cold water on his face, the world came into focus and he banished the thought of taking a day off. He had never taken a day off before and wasn't about to start now. Grabbing a towel, he dried his face off before he started getting ready for the day ahead. When he sat down and started eating his breakfast, he opened his phone and frowned in confusion. There was a voicemail with the timestamp 2:27 am. Who would call him that late at night?

Clicking the play button, he put the phone on speaker and sat it down as he listened to the voicemail.

Tony… Tony froze at the voice. Amanda, his fiancée. Why had she called him this late? Wait… was she, crying? Concerned, Tony stopped eating and listened intently. I can't do this anymore. I thought I could… I thought it would get easier now that we're engaged but if anything it just seems to be harder. I never see you… and… Tony, I've found someone else. I-I'm sorry. I hope-I hope one day you can forgive me. Goodbye, Tony.

People say when your heart breaks, it leaves you feeling numb inside, like someone iced your insides and you were left unable to feel anything. That there was this big, empty hole in your chest that you knew; you just knew was never going to be filled again. Tony had felt like that before, when Kate had died. But right now he would give anything to feel numb instead of… this. He couldn't distinguish one emotion from another. He felt angry and sad and confused. Everything was a big jumble of emotions and he had no idea what to do now because Amanda just couldn't be gone from his life like that.

Fifty-three words.

Thirty seconds.

One phone call.

No going back.

Thick, hot tears started leaking down Tony's face before he could try and stop them and he stared blankly at the phone in front of him. He didn't know what to think. Amada was really gone. He bit back a sob that tried to escape and he put his face in his hands, overwhelmed with emotion. He took deep, shuddering breath and lifted his head, his eyes red from crying. He ran a hand through his hair and stared out the window. It was beautiful outside today. He could hear the birds singing outside his window and any other day he would have started singing along with them as he got ready for his day at work.

But it wasn't any other day. Not anymore.

(Line Break)

Tony paused, staring at the ground and pretending to be very interested in the hardwood floors while he gathered himself. He didn't know what Jack was thinking, he didn't dare look at the older man's face. He was afraid to see the disappointment in his gaze, afraid of the smack he knew he would get followed by the yelling to deal with it and be a man and DiNozzo's don't cry-

Tony stiffened before letting out a deep breath and relaxing his body. Jack wasn't his father. Jack would understand him, or at least try to. He always did, and that was what Tony loved about Jackson Gibbs.

"Tony, look at me."

Tony hesitated for a second before he lifted his head to look at Jackson. Tony was quiet, his face somber. Jack stared at him for a moment longer before he spoke. "It's not your fault."

Tony blinked in surprise, but then chastised himself. Of course Jack would know what he was thinking, he always knew it. But even still, Tony shook his head. "Yes it is. If only I had taken time off, God knows I have enough unused personal days. Then maybe-"

"Tony." Jack warned with a stern gaze. "Let me finish talking. It is not completely your fault. Sure, there might have been some things you could have done differently, but there are also things that your girl could have done differently. Like letting you guys talk it out, for one, instead of just leaving you."

Tony let his gaze drop and didn't answer while he mulled over what Jack said. He supposed that was true, but he couldn't get rid of the sorrow and grief that filled him. It was like Amanda died. But worse. Tony lifted his gaze helplessly to Jack and stared at him, pleading for him to help. "What am I suposedto do now?" he choked, squeezing his eyes shut.

"Well that depends. You wanna explain why you didn't show up at my house tonight?" A deep voice came from in front of Tony and he opened his eyes to see Gibbs standing in the doorway.

"Boss, I…" Tony trailed off, at a loss on how to explain an instead settled for staring at the black boz in Gibbs' hands. "What that?" he questioned, his eyes flicking back up to meet Gibbs' gaze.

His Boss gave a sort of half smile and walked over to him, handing him the black box. "It's yours, Tony. Happy Birthday."
