This Kiss
Ages: Dick – 21 Artemis – 23
"Artemis! Hurry up!" Zatanna yelled at her roommate.
"I'm coming!" Artemis yelled back. She quickly attached her earrings and headed to the front door to meet her friends.
Zatanna and her girlfriend, Raquel, were waiting impatiently. Both were dressed up for a fun night of clubbing.
"Damn girl, what was taking you so long?" Raquel asked.
"Couldn't decide on earrings," she explained quickly as they left. "Forgive me for not being as excited as you two party animals are."
"Girl clubs not your thing?" Raquel teased.
"Sorry, no," Artemis answered back with a smile.
"Well," Zatanna said as she drove. "Tonight we are going to a straight club. With straight guys. For you to do straight things with."
"I have a boyfriend, Zee."
"You keep saying that, and yet we haven't seen him in weeks," Raquel argued.
"He got busy at his lab," Artemis defended.
"Busy with another woman," Zatanna muttered.
"Zatanna!"
"What? All I'm saying is that he and that Lauren chick seemed pretty cozy," she said as she found a parking spot.
"Wally wouldn't cheat."
"Would you?" Raquel asked as they walked in.
"No!"
"See, you say that now, but if he's with someone else, you can be too."
"You don't know if he's with someone else."
"Suit yourself."
"Speaking of suiting herself, Arty, look," Zatanna pointed over to the bar where a tall man with dark hair was standing with a skinny redhead.
"Mmmm," Raquel said. "If I wasn't in a happy relationship I would defiantly want some of that."
"Which one?" Artemis teased.
"Grayson, of course. Star's a bit too orange for my taste."
Star Fireson was currently the wearer of the fakest, if not orangest, tan on the planet.
"Don't make fun of her for it," Zatanna scolded. "It's not entirely her fault that her skin now matches her hair."
"I'm going to go talk to them," Artemis said.
"Have fun!" The other girls called after her.
Richard "Dick" Grayson was probably the only reason Artemis still agreed to go out with Raquel and Zatanna. She had a natural hatred of people and came off incredibly bitchy but Dick put up with her anyway. Add in his good looks and strange sense of humor, and Artemis decided it wasn't bad putting up with him either.
"Hey, Grayson," Artemis greeted as she reached the bar. She slipped of her leather jacket, exposing her bare arms. She would be too hot to put up with it after one dance, so she stuck it on the back of a stool.
"Hey, Arty. Ready to feel the aster?" Dick said, grabbing a beer for her.
"I didn't know you brought flowers," Artemis said sweetly, making fun of his made-up-word-that-was-already-a-word.
"Cute, but no."
"Hello, Friend Artemis," Star said happily. She had been raised in Japan before her parents moved to the US. She was still working out English.
"Hi, Star," Artemis said back, politely. "You mind if I steal Grayson for a dance?" The DJ had just put on her favorite song.
"Not at all," Star said with a smile and headed to get another drink.
Dick laughed as Artemis pulled him onto the dance floor.
"Wouldn't that boyfriend of yours be jealous?"
"Your ginger didn't seem to mind," Artemis retorted as she pulled him close.
"Good point," Dick said with a cocky grin.
They danced together for a bit before each went off to their own group of friends. But the whole night, whenever Artemis felt her mind wander to a certain dark haired someone, he was right there in front of her.
They were connected. No matter how far one traveled from the other, they found their way back into each other's arms by the end of the hour.
It was only when she found herself stumbling into the coat room with him that she realized what she was doing.
But a second later, she realized she didn't care.
His lips were on hers before she could react and she enjoyed the sweet taste of them. But she pulled away before it could go any further. Dick had a reputation for one night stands, and Artemis didn't want to become another notch in his belt. Oh sure, she had felt the passion, but if he wasn't in it too, there was no point. And that thought hurt her more than she cared to admit.
"I thought you liked me," he said as she pulled away. She could almost believe that was hurt in his eyes.
"I know your type, Grayson. And it's not me."
"Does that make me yours?" he asked with a wink.
"Tall, dark and handsome with those pretty blue eyes? You bet."
Dick kissed her again, slowly, before pulling back to look into her eyes.
"Then what's the problem?"
Ugh, the fact that he was a grown man and could still make his eyes look as innocent as a nine year old was unfair.
"It's not your looks or personality, Dick," she assured him. "But I do have a boyfriend."
"Oh yes, Zatanna told me all about him and how he's been cheating on you."
"He's not. And even if he was, you're doing the same thing to Star."
"She knows we're not serious," he said quietly, leaning in closer.
So with the heavy bass and Dick's scent blocking out all her other senses, Artemis threw her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his. He smiled into it and put his arms on her waist to pull her closer. She backed him into the door as the kiss deepened. She knew what would happen after this. They would make out, might even get a bit of each other's clothes off. But nothing real would come from it. Hell, even if they ended up sleeping together, nothing would change. But she pushed these thoughts aside and focused on her tongue in his mouth and his hands roaming up her shirt.
When his hands moved to her legs and he pulled them around his waist, Artemis stopped kissing him and let him attack her neck as he pushed her against the wall.
"Go out with me."
"What?" she asked, thinking she hadn't heard right.
Dick pulled away from her neck and looked into her eyes.
"Artemis, go out with me," he repeated.
"Why?"
He placed a soft kiss on her lips.
"So I can do that every night."
Raquel's question from earlier that night echoed in her mind.
"Would you cheat?"
"Yes," she answered Dick, and pulled his lips back to hers.
She'd break up with Wally in the morning.
