Summary: The Battle of Wolf 359 left scares on many people. Selena Shepard was no different, for years she has been dealing with nightmares and depression. She even thought about leaving Starfleet and she would have had it not been for a few people giving her the push and drive to stay in Starfleet. Now after years of sitting behind a desk she must find the courage to journey and battle the danger in the final frontier. Is she ready for the challenges that face her and her crew? Well you're going to have to read to find out.
(A/N: Will take place during the DS9 timeframe with a few meeting between the USS Normandy, TNG, and DS9, might go through the dominion war. This is an AU story so in this universe the Bajorans in Starfleet are allowed to wear their earring.)

Episode 4: First Contacts
"Captain's Log: Stardate 49949.7. We have received word from crewman Tali'Zorah that her people received her message and they would like to meet us in a few hours at the location we rescued her from. The USS Kilimanjaro and USS San Antonio are already at the location scanning the relay or patrolling the area. I hope that this first contact will be an easy one. End Log."
The door bell rung causing Selena to look at the door and say, "Come."
"Thank you again for helping my people Captain." Tali said happily.
"Think nothing of it Tali; helping people is what we do." Selena said happily.
"Captain we will be entering the system in a few minutes." EDI said in a flat tone.
"I'm on my way." Selena said as she got up from the chair in her office. She motioned for Tali to fallow her. They left Selena's ready room and walked on to the bridge. "Is there any word from the Kilimanjaro or the San Antonio?" Selena asked calmly.
"There is nothing as of yet ma'am." Jacob said as he looked over his console.
"Strange they should have sent a message -" Selena started to say.
"Captain distress signal coming in from the Kilimanjaro." EDI said flatly.
"Put on." Selena said with concern.
"This is Commander Hannah Shepard acting Captain of the USS Kilimanjaro. We have been engaged by an unknown number of ships. If there are any Federation ships in the area please respond." Hannah said worried tone.
"Are there any other ships in the area able to respond?" Selena asked with concern.
EDI quickly checked and said, "Only one other ship is close enough to respond. The USS Texas a Nebula class, they have received the distress signal and are proceeding to the location."
"Very well; relay any information to the Texas when we arrive." Selena ordered as she sat in her chair. Selena looked at Tali and said, "You might want to hold onto something."
"We are arriving at the location of the distress call Captain." Jacob said calmly trying to hide his nervousness.
"Bring us out of warp and go to red alert." Selena ordered causing the lights and a low alarm to go off a couple of times. The ship transitioned back to normal space.
"What is the situation with the San Antonio or the Kilimanjaro?" Selena asked nervously.
"The San Antonio has taken minimal damage and is dealing with a lot of the smaller ships." Jacob said from his console. "The Kilimanjaro however has taken quite a bit of damage." Jacob said cautiously.
Selena stood up and said, "Bring up the Kilimanjaro on the view screen." Once the screen was up she saw a large ship and several small ships attacking the Kilimanjaro. "Target the ships attacking the Kilimanjaro and take out their weapons and engines. So I can find out who decided to attack us." Selena ordered before walking over to Joker. "You got this Joker?" Selena asked already knowing the answer.
"Of course I do Captain." Joker said with a smile.
Selena smiled back and went back to her seat. Selena looked at Tali and said, "Hope you're ready for your first battle aboard a Federation ship crewman Tali."
Tali did not flinch at the talk of battle. "I have seen battle before Captain." Tali said calmly. Selena didn't have to be a Betazoid to know that she was still nervous.
The Normandy approached the attacking ships and opened fire on all those attacking the Kilimanjaro. Most of the small craft were not ready for another ship and were caught off guard which was deadly for them. The large ship took a few seconds to react but when it did react it spilt what weapons it could to attack the Normandy, but unlike the Kilimanjaro and San Antonio who had their shields at a low setting the Normandy didn't. So when the weapons that were aimed at the Normandy did next to nothing; the bigger ship turned all its weapons from the Kilimanjaro and started firing at the Normandy. For a few seconds before several phaser beams destroyed the weapons and crippled its engines. Selena sat in her chair watching the now crippled ship float through space.
"The USS Texas just entered the system." Jacob said from his console.
"Captain the Kilimanjaro has a warp core breach." EDI said flatly.
"Get me a channel to Commander Shepard and the Captain of Texas." Selena ordered in a worried tone.
EDI quickly types away at her console and said, "I don't know how long I can keep it connected Captain."
Two screens appeared. "Captain Sarto are you able to transport the crew of the Kilimanjaro?"
"I can and will Captain Nix. Keep any surviving attackers busy." Sarto said flatly.
"Thank you Captain, get my crew to safety while I set the Kilimanjaro's course." Hannah said in a rushed tone.
"We will beam you out at the once your done Commander." Selena said nervously.
Hannah smiled and said, "Thank you Captain Nix."
The Texas was able to take the crew while the Normandy provided cover. They returned the favor while the Normandy beamed out Hannah. "Are you ready Commander?" Selena asked on edge.
"Beam me up." Hannah said as she stepped away from the console. A few nerve racking seconds later Hannah came over the comms and shouted, "I'm on board Captain!"
Selena looked towards Joker and said, "Get us out of here." Joker's hands flew over the console causing the ship to move away from the Kilimanjaro. The Texas fallowed not too far behind the Normandy. Not a few seconds later after both ships got away did the Kilimanjaro explode taking a few of the enemy ships with it. "We will mourn the crew later. Is there any word from the San Antonio?" Selena asked curiously.
EDI tapped away at her console for a few seconds then said, "The San Antonio has dealt with the smaller ships and beginning any needed repairs."
"Tali try to get in contact with your people and see where they are. I want to know who else knew about our meeting." Selena ordered calmly.
"Yes Captain." Tali said before she went to a console.
"T'Mira you have the bridge; I want us on alert in case of any other attackers. Also check with the San Antonio and see if we can render any aid. Also give the Texas our thanks for responding so quickly." Selena said as she got up from her seat.
"Yes Captain." T'Mira said flatly.
Selena walked to the turbolift only to see it open and Hannah to step out of it. Selena motioned for her to fallow her. When they got into her ready room Selena hugged Hannah tightly. "I almost lost you mom." Selena said in a sad tone.
Hannah patted Selena on the back knowing how to comfort her. "It's ok I'm safe now." Hannah said in a soothing tone. Selena and Hannah hugged for a few more seconds before they breaking apart.
"So what happened?" Selena asked a little curious.
Hannah shook her head at the sudden change in Selena. "Everything was calm and we were doing a few scans of space around the object. When it started to activate we thought this was your friends people, so we had our shields at a lower setting so we didn't frighten them." Hannah said with a tired sigh. "Few ships come out of the object and we get ready to contact these people. Only instead of talking they start shooting at us. We raised our shields the best we could but enough damage had been done. Our Captain was in one of the areas hit and died quickly." Hannah said sadly.
"Are you going to be ok mom?" Selena asked with concern.
"I will be." Hannah said with a smile.
"My ship has a counselor, if want you to talk to her." Selena said in a stern tone.
"Selena I will be fine." Hannah said a little annoyed.
Selena could order her to talk Kelly but she knew it wouldn't do any good. "Please mom for me?" Selena asked in a pleading tone.
"We will see." Hannah said with a sigh.
Selena smiled that this knowing was the best she was going to get. "Thanks." Selena said with a smile.

Selena looked up at Tali and asked, "How much do you trust this information?"
"It came from my father, he became a little worried when I hadn't left him a message or talked to him in a few days." Tali said with certainty.
Selena looked at the information again and said, "So was your father surprised when you asked about your first message."
Tali nodded and sadly said, "Once I told him everything that had happened, we came up with a few theories and we both came to the same conclusion. It seems that the Batarian's returned and found my ship after we left. Once they realized that I had faked my death, they began to look for any long range communications coming from this area of space heading towards Citadel Space." Tali then angrily said, "They captured my message and used it prepare an attack on the meeting."
"This wasn't your fault Tali; you couldn't have known they would come back and check the planet or intercept you communication." Selena said trying to ease Tali's discomfort. "All you can do is learn from it and prepare counter measures to make sure it doesn't happen again." Selena said in a kind tone.
Tali let out a sigh of relief at hearing that Selena wasn't angry at her. "Thank you Captain." Tali said happily.
"Tali if you need to someone make an appointment with Kelly." Selena said with concern.
"If I have a chance to Captain, I will." Tali said nervously.
"Do you have any idea when your people will be here and who is coming?" Selena asked curiously.
"My dad said it might take an hour or more for them to decide who will come along. But if I would have to take a guess, it would probably be Zaal'Koris vas Qwib-Qwib, Shala'Raan vas Tonbay, Han'Gerrel vas Neema, and possible my father." Tali said calmly.
"What should I know to impress them?" Selena asked curiously. For the next half hour Tali went over what she knew about each of the possible Admirals. By the time they took a break Selena thanked her and asked if she would like to be there for the meeting. Tali said she would causing Selena to smile the two left so they could be ready to make official first contact with Tali's people.

Captain's Quarters
They had gotten word that Tali's people would be arriving in an hour and that had been a little over an house and a half ago. "Mom could and would you please stop that already." Selena said like a child annoyed that her mother was fussing over her.
"I will not have my daughter look too tomboyish in her formal uniform." Hannah said in a stern tone.
"Mom I could always order you to stop." Selena said in a warning tone. Hannah just stared Selena down knowing that her daughter could but wouldn't. Selena sighed and with an annoyed tone said, "Just finish already would you."
Hannah did one last check before looking at Selena and smiling. "I know your nervous, but you will do fine." Hannah said in a reassuring tone.
Selena smiled at her mother and said, "I know mom, but remember I have the memories of past host of the Nix symbiont that have had to make or be a part of First Contact."
"I know Selena I just worry." Hannah said in a worried tone.
"And that is why I love you mom." Selena said as she gave her a quick hug.
"I know, now go you have something important to do." Hannah said fighting back a tear.
Selena left her room and began walking down the corridor. As she walked she reviewed everything that Tali had told her.
"Captain you are need on the bridge." EDI said over the comms.
Selena tapped her commbadge and asked, "What is going on EDI?"
"Two ships came through the Relay a few moments ago. EDI said flatly.
Selena made her way to a turbolift and asked, "Have they begun any hostile actions to each other or us?"
"No Captain they are just sitting there." EDI said flatly.
Selena sighed and asked, "Any idea who they are?"
"Both ships sent messages when they arrived letting us know who they are. One of the ships is carrying Crewman Tali's people and the other and the other says they are from the Citadel Council." EDI said flatly.
Selena sighed again and said, "Send a message to the people from the Council and tell them to select a few of their people then wait for next message."
"Very well Captain." EDI said flatly.
Selena tapped her commbadge and continued on her trek to the transporter room. Along the way she met up with one of the security personnel and smiled. "Chief Williams I'm glad to see your living up to the tough Williams family ideals." Selena said cheerfully.
Ashley smiled and asked, "Thank you Captain but how do you know of the Williams family ideals?"
"I worked for Admiral Nix who had several meeting with your grandfather. When she died I was joined with the Nix symbiont." Selena explained calmly.
A look of realization went across Ashley's face at hearing this. "Now I understand Captain and again thank you." Ashley said with a little smile.
"So I hope you're not nervous standing guard over something this important." Selena said calmly.
"Of course I'm not nervous Captain, I'm a Williams and there nothing tougher than a Williams." Ashley said with confidence.
Selena smiled at hearing this and said, "Good to hear Chief, because I want you and all the other security staff on alert."
"Do you think someone might try something?" Ashley asked cautiously.
"I hope not, but like your grandfather always said it's better to be safe than sorry." Selena said in a low tone. "Besides I already have security posted around the important areas." Selena said flatly. The two entered the transporter room and took their places. Tali was standing not to far from Selena.
"Captain they are ready." The transporter operator said calmly.
"Energize." Selena said calmly.
A few seconds later several people appeared on the transporter pad and looked around to make sure they were safe and that they were still in their suits. "Father." Tali said happily. She stepped out of line and hugged her father happily.
Tali's father put his arms around his Tali and happily returned the hug. "You are looking well daughter." Tali's father said happily.
"Thank you father." Tali said a little embarrassed. "Let me introduce my Captain and the person who rescued me and is willing to help our people." Tali said as she pulled away from her father. "This is my Captain Selena Nix." Tali said introducing Selena.
"Admiral Rael'Zorah thanks you for rescuing my daughter and taking her aboard your ship." Rael said calmly.
"My I ask why you decided to help our people." A female voice said in questioning tone.
"Because helping was the right thing to do; besides you never know when helping someone out now might make them want to help you at a later time." Selena said calmly.
"What will this help cost the Quarian people?" A male voice asked in a sharp tone.
"As I told Tali the only cost is what knowledge you are willing to trade or share with us." Selena said calmly. This caused Tali's father and the others that came with him a little surprise.
"Captain the delegation from the Council is waiting." EDI said over the comms.
"Tell them to wait a second." Selena said with an annoyed tone. Selena motioned for those on the transporter pad to move off of it. When Tali's people were safe Selena had delegation from the Citadel Council transported over. When the transporter was finished Selena walked towards the people and said, "Welcome aboard my ship."
"Thank you for allowing us one your ship." A female voice said in a kind tone.
"If you will all fallow me we can begin our talks." Selena said calmly. She lead the way out of the transporter room towards a turbolift.

Briefing Room
The group walked and Selena motioned for people to sit at the table. Selena took the seat at the head of the table. "I would like to know how you found out about our meeting?" Selena asked the Council's delegation.
"The Council got a request from the Batarian Hegemony to find out what happened to one of their ships. They said that their ship was attacked while they were helping a Quarian on her pilgrimage." A male said in a stern tone.
Selena looked at the man and calmly said, "I am sorry to say this but you were being lied to by the Batarians. You see I have proof and testimony to the fact that this Batarian Hegemony and their ships attacked our ships first." Selena let this information settle in beige saying, "Seeing as you have learned the truth I must ask if there is anything else you need with us?"
"We would like to offer a trade and a chance to get to know each other." A female said calmly.
"I cannot speak for the Federation Council as it one of their representatives that will deal with trade and other negotiations with other large organizations." Selena said calmly.
"So you will not be able to help my people?" Rael asked with a hint of worry.
"Oh I have been allowed to speak with you and begin negations with your people Admiral." Selena said causing the others to become confused. "I believe that I may have just confused everyone." Selena said a little embarrassed.
"Not at all Captain; from what I can gather you planned to talk with the Quarian people and had time to get permission and the knowledge to handle a First Contact scenario." A man said cheerfully.
"Quite perspective of you Mr." Selena said in a questioning tone.
"Dr. Mordin Solus." Mordin said cheerfully.
"What are you a doctor of?" Selena asked curiously.
"Mostly biological and health orientated; but I will admit I do find robotics and engineering to be quite interesting." Mordin said happily.
"That is good to hear." Selena said a little happy.
"What his interest our fine and can be discussed later. Back to the topic at hand, when will we begin negotiations?" The man asked with a hint of anger.
"When someone from the Federation Council gets to it, they will be able to open negotiations." Selena said in a stern tone. "Now I have something's to work on with the Quarian people." Selena said in a stern tone.
The man pounded his hand on the table and angrily said, "I do not care what kind of deal you have with these Quarians, you will deal with what we want first."
Selena looked stone faced at the man and angrily said, "First off do not hit my table and if you do that again then I will personally throw onto the transporter pad and have beamed back to your ship faster than you can recite a single prime numbers. Now as I said earlier a person assigned by the Federation Council will be dealing with concerns as long as they are reasonable."
"Please accept my deepest apologize for the actions of my Turian colleague Captain." The female said in an apologetic tone. The woman looked at the Turian with a glare.
"Thank you and for a better chance of negotiations on the future do not bring someone who has problems with anger management." Selena said flatly.
"I will take that into account Captain." The woman said calmly.
"I will make a note in my report that both you and Dr. Solus were wonderful and kind people. All I need to know is your name ma'am." Selena said a little embarrassed that she forgot to ask for the woman's name.
"I am Matriarch Benezia and I thank you for your kind words." Benezia said in a kind tone.
Selena tapped her commbadge and said, "T'Mira will you please come to briefing room."
"I'm on my way Captain." T'Mira said before ending the communication. Not a second later did the door open and T'Mira walkthrough and asked in a flat tone, "You asked for me Captain?"
"Yes will please she these three politely off to the transporter room so that they may return to their ship." Selena said calmly.
"Captain with your permission I would like to stay so that I could gain a better understanding of your Federation and its procedures." Mordin said a little hopeful that he would be allowed to stay.
"Mordin are you sure you want to stay by yourself?" Benezia asked with concern.
"I do Benezia; I believe that if I can gain more knowledge about our potential allies, then we will not have the same problems we have had with others in the past." Mordin said calmly. "I can also hopefully make up for some the things I have done in the past." Mordin said in a low and sad tone.
Benezia got and walked over to Mordin and whispered something into his ear that made him smile. "Just be careful my friend." Benezia said in a kind tone. She looked at the Turian man and motioned for him to fallow her. They were led by T'Mira out of the briefing room. Mordin remand seated and waited patiently while talks with the Quarians began.
"Now that little bit of ugliness has been dealt with. Let us get to the matter and hand them I will show you around my ship." Selena said a little more cheerful. For the next hour they talked about the details of what the Quarian people would be gaining if the accepted the refugee status with the Federation. Many of the Admirals were surprised and a little shocked to hear all of this and told Selena it would take them some time to discuss this with each other and the Civilian Council of their people. "Now that we have finished why don't I show you around my ship." Selena said happily.
"Maybe another time Captain we must discuss all the information you have given us." Rael said in a serious tone.
"I understand that this so I will have Tali show you back to the transporter room. I wish you luck on making your decision and telling your people." Selena said as she got up pleasantly said good by to the Admirals. Once they had left with Tali, Selena looked at Mordin and asked, "I remember you said that your were an biological and medical expert. Would you happen to know anything dextro-protein species?"
"I know quite a bit about them." Mordin said calmly.
"Would you be willing to help my ships Chief Medical Examiner and other Medical personnel to better understand the dextro-protein species? I won't force you to share any of your knowledge with us." Selena said in a calm tone.
"I would be glad to help and share my knowledge. All I need is a place to sleep, eat, and work." Mordin said a little cheerful.
Selena smiled and said, "Well then let me show you to our Sickbay so you can begin to impart your knowledge." The two left the briefing room fallowed close behind by Ashley would stay and keep an eye on Mordin for a while until another security personnel took her place.

"Captain's Log: Supplemental. It's been several hours' sense the Quarian delegation and the delegation from the Citadel Council had arrived and initiated First Contact. While I had planned to meet with the Quarian delegation the arrival of the Citadel Councils was unplanned for. It is my opinion that any further dealings with any delegates from the Citadel Council should be dealt with by Ambassadors with many years of experience and a strong back bone. One of their delegate a Dr. Mordin Solus decided to stay and offered to help us better understand dextro-protein species; I believe that he and his knowledge will be valuable in helping us to better understand and help the Quarian people. End Log."
A/N: Who will the Citadel Council take the fact that they are not the most powerful group in the galaxy? Will the Quarians accept the Federation's offer? Well you're just going to have to read the next chapter to find out what happens. As always please Review it helps me with this story.
