The three of us ran out of the station. Which we soon found out wasn't a smart move.
"Desist running. Or we will open fire." one monotonous, but clearly electronic voice spoke to us.
Saya was about to open her tube, but Merlin stopped her. "Don't. If we fight back, we'll have everyone else think we're criminals, and they'll work against us."
Saya was reluctant, but she left her tube alone. "Then what do you suggest we do?"
Merlin took a deep breath, after which he stretched his lips into a smile, turned around and spoke to our chasers. "What is the problem?"
I turned to look at who he was talking to. They were Cylons, all right. These Quantrons that Murphy mentioned weren't with them, and I really hoped it would stay that way.
"You were leaving the scene of a crime in a hurry." one of them replied. "Before we could question you."
"Can it wait?" Merlin asked, "We... she forgot to feed her horses."
He pointed at Saya when he said that, causing Saya to frown on him.
"Did you say horses?" somebody in the crowd asked.
"You own more than one horse?" somebody else overheard.
I smacked my own face. Us modern people would say something like leaving the stove on. Of course Merlin doesn't know any such technologies, so he said the first thing that came to his mind, which was horses. In a world where planes, trains and cars can't be used, a horse seems like one of the few remaining ways to travel anywhere fast. Of course people would love to own a horse of their own. I could tell from the look on Merlin's face that he too realized his own mistake.
"Well done, Merlin. You just drew everyone's attention." why didn't Saya sound sarcastic when she said this? Even Merlin was surprised.
"Can I have one? I'll pay you big bucks for it." someone approached us.
"How many have you got? How old are they?" we were soon surrounded by people who wanted to know all the details.
"Seize this gathering." the Cylons had raised the volume of their voices, but nobody listened to them. "You are obstructing justice."
It didn't take long before the larger crowd had almost made the Cylons disappear from our field of vision. I saw Saya whisper something in Merlin's ear, who nodded. I saw his lips move, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. Whatever it was, it made smoke appear from underneath us. I could hear people ask what was going on, before they started coughing wildly. As quick as I could, I put on my goggles, where I switched the heat-vision on. I could see every nearest red spot either bent down to cough, or rubbing their eyes as the smoke hurt. The only blue spot that I saw was that of Saya. For once in my life I was glad to see her, as this was the only way I knew to tell her apart from everyone else. I could see her grabbing Merlin's and my arm, and pulling us both through the crowd.
After what felt like a few minutes, Saya finally stopped running, and let go of my arm. Because of how tightly she held on to me (and probably Merlin as well) I was too focused on the pain, I forgot to switch off the goggles. She no longer held on to me, so I could think straight again, and finally switch it off. We were in a small alley, where there were no crowds, and from the looks of it no bums either.
"That was clever, wasn't it?" Merlin complimented Saya.
"I guess your mistake was good for something, for a change." Saya replied.
"Was that a compliment?"
"I was saying we were lucky this time."
Merlin grinned, "You just gave me a compliment."
"Don't push your luck." Saya warned him.
"Why can't you just admit it?"
"Why won't you let it go?"
I sighed. The only way I could think of to stop these two from arguing, is by drawing Murphy's attention. Thinking about it, I started to wonder why he hadn't reacted. I tapped my ear-piece, but he didn't respond. I tapped a little faster, harder even, but still nothing.
"What's the matter?" Merlin asked me, "Something wrong with your ear?"
"That's where his ear-piece is." Saya sounded annoyed. "Murphy, are you getting this?"
Saya raised an eyebrow. "Murphy, can you hear me?"
"Murphy?" Merlin tried it himself, then shook his head, "Nothing."
"Either there's a problem with the machines, or he's just not answering." Saya said.
"Why would he not answer?"
"He was listening in on their communication channels." Saya suggested, "They must have found out, so he's keeping quiet to keep himself from being discovered."
"What are you saying?" Merlin asked, "We can't ask Murphy to help us?"
"Apparently."
"What do you mean, apparently?" Merlin was appaled, "How can you be so calm about this?"
"We survived Narnia without him."
"Without Murphy's help, yes. But not without Tyrion's help. Or Thea's."
Saya rolled her eyes. "World's most powerful sorcerer, and you can't even help yourself."
"I told you before, my magic doesn't work the same way in every world." Merlin explained.
I had enough of their constant arguing, but I didn't think standing between them would help, as they would probably just push me away. Instead, I decided to try and take Saya's sword away. I grabbed hold of the tube in which she kept it hidden and tugged at it. Too fast for me to see, she turned around, opened her tube, drew out her sword, pulled me to her, then held her blade to my throat.
"What are you doing?" Merlin was appalled to see this.
"M?" Saya only then recognized me, "Why are you trying to take my sword?"
I shook my head. Slowly, because I didn't want her sword to cut me. I carefully raised my left hand, to point at her, then at Merlin. I then balled both of my hands into fists, which I slammed into each other, four times. This I followed by waving both of my hands.
"I think he's saying he wants us to stop fighting." Merlin said.
I feared Saya would ask what that has to do with me trying to take her sword. But apparently she understood. She let go of me, and hid her sword again.
"Those telepods." Saya brought up, "Where do they come from?"
"Why do you ask?"
"If this Cylon woman's grand scheme involves the telepods, then there has to be a place where they are being manufactured." Saya reasoned, "If we can go there, convince the people there to stop producing these, her plan won't come into effect."
"And if all the manufacturers are Cylons?" Merlin questioned.
"Then we just stop them all." Saya said, "Leaving no one to carry out her plans."
Merlin thought about this. "Sounds simple enough. But how do you want to find these people? Or even get there?"
Saya had to admit Merlin had a point there. "You're right. We can't just go around and ask people where to look for these people. Even Lehnsherr was surprised about some of our questions."
"Lehnsherr, that's it!" Merlin said, "We could ask to him tell us."
"We can't." Saya said.
Merlin sighed, "Why don't you trust him? You were the one who asked him how to how to contact him."
"Only because I wanted to know where to find him after all this is over." Saya replied, "Earlier, my sword moved. I don't know how or why. But it started as soon as he was near, and stopped when he was gone. He also seemed to know more about us than he's letting on."
"You're just imagining things." Merlin dismissed this.
"If I am, then so is M." Saya told him, then turned to me, "You saw something as you looked at him through those goggles, didn't you?"
I saw a number of things when I looked through those goggles, but that's not the only reason why I didn't trust him. But how could I tell them. Murphy probably saw what I was doing, so he could. But I haven't heard his voice throughout our conversation, so he wouldn't help me out.
"It must not have been that important, or Murphy would have brought it up." Merlin said.
"Even so, we can't be too sure if we should trust him."
Merlin scratched his head, but then he looked at me. "Why won't we let M decide?"
Looking at Saya's face, I could hear her say "huh?" inside my head.
"Let him point at me if he agrees with me, or point at you if he agrees with you." Merlin explained, "And which ever one of us he chooses, we won't hold that against each other. Are you all right with that?"
Saya nodded, then looked at me.
So I had to decide whether we should contact Lehnsherr or not. I can imagine Saya only agreed because she knew I was on her side. In a way, she was right. I didn't know what to think of Lehnsherr. Every metal object reacted to him somehow, he seemed too interested in us, and indeed seemed to indicate he knew that we're not of this world. But if he wasn't, then why did he know so much about this world? Also, he seemed to be collecting these metal bugs. What were they? There were so many questions that he raised. Maybe Saya is right, and we shouldn't trust him. But then, can we just let him walk around in this world, without us knowing where he is? If we contact him, we'll know where and when he'll be. So I made my decission there and then.
I pointed at Merlin. Saya's eyes widened at this, but Merlin laughed.
"Maybe he doesn't think like you do after all." he remarked.
"Don't even think about rubbing it in." Saya said.
