Eulogy for a Walker

Warning: this will make no sense if you haven't read my story "Awake". I've been asked to write more chapters for it; however, I like the way it comes full circle. Instead, I give you a collection of short chapters, chronicling each character's reaction to the events depicted in "Awake". T for language.

4. Chapter 4

Hershel

Such a thing should not be possible. But I examined her body, and I can confirm it: Dani was a walker. She was showing signs of decomposition, and not just on her arm – that could have been necropsied tissues from the infected wound. Her whole flesh was in a state of putrefaction, and so were her bones. A living human's skull wouldn't cave in the way hers did where – where the bolt hit her. As for her brain, what I could see of it was a dark fetid mess. I cannot make sense out of this. If her brain was in such an advanced state of decay, how was she still able to think or reason?

I used to be a man of faith. Since everything has come apart, I no longer know what to think or believe. If this is a test the Lord is putting us through, it sure is a harsh one. I don't understand what its purpose is or how we can get through it.
