As soon as Kuzon finished uttering the word 'ride', we took off.
A good length of the road from the school to our houses was a straight and smooth one. So riding on it was easy, racing on it even more so.
The trees whizzed by and the wind whistled furiously as I pedalled in the same manner. I could hear my bike groaning lightly under my weight as I forced it forward. Beside me to the right, Kuzon and his bike did the same.
I looked forward. There were no cars ahead at all. The road was a minor road surrounded by tall trees and there was a major road nearby, so cars here were uncommon.
Still riding like a bat fresh out of hell, I chanced a quick glance back. The road was clear, except for Katara following us in Kuzon's jeep. She was about fourty meters behind us.
I refocused my attention to the road. We were almost halfway through, riding like olympic cyclists. The left curve in the road where we would stop was still ahead of us. I estimated the distance between us and the curve to be about half a mile.
I grinned and groaned as I rotated my legs faster. This was how things were supposed to be.
*Half a mile later*
"I won!" Kuzon yelled.
"No, I won," I countered. "I was on the inside when we turned, so it means I was ahead of you."
Kuzon waved his hands around before yelling. "There is no inside! We're both outside!"
"That's not what I meant and you know it!"
"I know I won," Kuzon grinned.
"No! I won," I countered. Again.
We went back and forth until Katara drove into view.
She halted to a stop beside us and rolled down the window. Then she pulled her phone away from her face and tapped it's screen. She must have been making a call while we were riding. "What are you boys arguing about?" she sighed.
"We're arguing about our race. Kuzon here doesn't want to admit that I won," I explained quickly.
"You didn't win!" Kuzon yelled. "I DID!"
And back and forth we went. Again. Our voices rising as we yelled at each other in the middle of the empty road.
"BOYS! BOYS!," Katara yelled, bringing our childish bickering to an halt. "Can't we just call it a draw and go home?" She asked.
As if we had planned it, Kuzon and I both turned to face her, and yelled "NO!" at the same time.
I would not call it a draw. I won, fair and square. And I was going to make Kuzon admit it.
"You did not win. I won. I was on the inside," I explained again, pointing at the curve in the road. "And you were on the outside..." I pointed at the far side of the curve, making sure to put emphasis on the 'outside'. "...when we turned so that me-
"No. You lost. And you're just too childish to admit it," Kuzon smirked.
I slapped my face and dragged my hand down, almost peeling my face off. Sometimes Kuzon could be so infuriating.
Me childish?
He was the childish one.
I raised my hand off of my face and looked at him. He was standing beside his bike with a knowing smirk on his face.
With a sigh, I decided to let him have it. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to go home.
"Fine," I admitted. "You won."
He grinned smugly at me. "See? Now there's a good sport!"
As if that wasn't enough, Kuzon turned around and began to dance. And wave...to the trees as if he had just won the Tour De France.
A few moments later, he began to sing.
"In your face... Uh huh...
I won the race... Uh...
You sir...
Are a loser..."
I glared at him, and was about to ressurect the argument just to wipe that smug grin off his face. But the pleading look that Katara gave me was enough cause for me to leave the argument dead. If I knew Katara, she was begging me so she could go.
I nodded, silently telling her that I was done arguing. She smiled and mouthed the words 'thank you'.
I turned to face the fork in the road. "Later Kuzon," I called pushed my bike forward and started to pedal. "Later Katara."
"Ok see you later, Aang," Katara responded.
Kuzon turned and yelled hysterically, "Wait-Wait-Wait... You're leaving?"
I raised one hand off the handlebar of my mountain bike and turned my head around to yell, "YUP!"
"Dont go! Dont leave me alone with her!" Kuzon yelled back. "She might take advantage of me!"
"Kuzon!" Katara yelled.
"She's supposed to do that!" I yelled back, grinning.
"Aang!" Katara yelled again.
I chuckled and shook my head as I cycled for home. Those two could be so... Them.
They were perfect for each other.
Kuzon was all the weirdness of the universe in a human body, and Katara was the sanity the universe assigned to him.
I grinned at how opposite they were. Yet they seemed to work out just fine.
My expression, however fell when I realized I didn't have anyone that was perfect for me.
