Yuzu held the box close to her body. She was in a rush to get home after work, it was pouring rain, and neither her or the little black kitten in the box had any protection from the environment.
Mei is gonna kill me… Yuzu thought to herself. But I can't just leave this little kitten to die… Yuzu hurried through the rain. She looked down at the black cat. Black cats often were abandoned by people base off of silly superstitions. The kitten looked up with sad hazel eyes. In truth Yuzu never knew how Mei was with animals since she had never owned one. Yuzu once took care of a neighborhood cat when she was a little girl, but that was about it. Maybe I can hide it until I find another home for her or somethings…
Yuzu came upon the apartment she shared with Mei. She opened the door into the building and sighed. Her main goal was just to get out of the weather, she walked up the stairs slowly, thinking of ways to somehow convince the younger woman to at least hold on to the cat for a while. The kitten curled up against the wall of the cardboard box closes to Yuzu. The blonds heart broke at how cute the kitten was and how helpless it was. She couldn't believe that people had the nerve to treat animals as if they were just mere objects.
"Don't worry little guy, you're safe now…" Yuzu fiddled with the keys to her apartment and finally got the door open. "I'm home!" Yuzu announced.
"Oh?" she heard a voice coming from the living room. "How was work babe?"
The kitten meow softly. "Uh! Uh, it was pretty dead…" Yuzu said putting her finger against her lips. Somehow the kitten understood the gesture and went back to laying in the box.
"What was that?"
"M-My stomach!" Yuzu jolted putting the box be the door. "I'm hungry!"
"Uh… I ordered some take out." Mei said peaking over the couch. "What's wrong? Why are you red?"
Yuzu blushed in embarrassment. "I'm just cold. It's pouring rain outside." Yuzu came around the corner of the wall to see Mei.
"I told you to take an umbrella…" Mei said turning back to the t.v
Yuzu sighed. The box was still by the door with the kitten still sitting in it. Quietly she snuck into the kitchen and took out a can of tuna. "How was your day Mei?"
Yuzu struggled to open that can, as she tried to distract Mei with small conversations.
"It was alright, I didn't have homework tonight. Wanna watch a movie tonight?"
"Sure!" Yuzu perked up. Maybe I can finesse having a pet with a movie night… Yuzu thought to herself. A small pop of the can was heard. Yuzu looked up quickly to see if Mei noticed. She didn't. Yuzu breathed a sigh of relief. She placed the can into the box, and the kitten quickly moved to devour the food. The kitten purred quietly much to Yuzu's satisfaction. She covered the box with a small blanket so that the kitten wouldn't try to leave.
"I'm gonna take a quick shower and put somethings away. You can choose, since I chose it last time."
Mei nodded in agreement. Yuzu began winding down for the night, after a quick shower and throwing things into her and Mei's room. Yuzu quietly went to visit the little kitten again. When she turned the corner, she saw the blanket on the ground and the box empty.
"Yuzu…" Yuzu heard slight tone of annoyance in Mei voice.
Yuzu's body froze, and she almost refused to turn around. "Y-yes Mei?"
"What is the meaning of this?"
Yuzu slowly turned around to see the kitten sitting on Mei's head. Yuzu blushed. Had it not been for Mei's serious look, the entire scene would have been the perfect picture. But that was not the case.
"Surprise?" Yuzu shrugged a guilty smile stretched on her face.
"Yuzu."
"MEI! Someone abandoned him! What was I supposed to do!? Leave him in the pouring rain?" Yuzu threw herself at Mei's feet.
"We can't take care of a cat" Mei replied bluntly.
"Mei he's a cat! Cat's don't care. For goodness sake he's sitting on your head!"
Mei peeked up at the kitten sitting comfortably on her head. Yuzu did have a point. Mei sighed. "I guess… He can stay until we figure out something for him…"
Yuzu instantly stood up. "Yes!"
After dinner the two cuddled on the couch starting their movie night. A small meow was heard as the kitten clawed at the blanket begging to be put on the couch as well.
Mei picked up the kitten and place him between her and Yuzu. The kitten purred as it settled in Mei's lap. Yuzu giggled. "I think he likes you."
Mei blushed. "T-That doesn't mean he can stay…" Mei's answer didn't sound as confident this time around.
The kitten meowed in appreciation as Yuzu stroked his back. "Come on, I already know you have a name for him. What are we gonna call him?
Mei sighed. She never had a pet, and secretly always wanted one, but due to responsibilities she never had the time to have one, much less even ask her grandfather for one. "Ollie…"
"Ollie?" Yuzu thought about it and looked at the little kitten. "I think I like that. Huh? Ollie."
The kitten was sound asleep in Mei's lap. "It's your fault by the way."
"Huh? Me?" Yuzu questioned, a little confused by Mei's statement.
Mei chuckled. "Yes you. With the big caring heart. Always giving a home to things that don't have one." Mei laid her head on Yuzu's shoulder. "This kitten isn't the only one thankful for you. I love you."
Yuzu smiled and kissed Mei's forehead. "I love you too."
