Chapter Four: A Fury's Strength
Batman watched as a descending aircraft created a glimmer in the night sky. He lifted his binoculars to further observe the aircraft. Zooming he lenses of the binoculars, he took note of its prominent features for any clue. It was metallic oval shape, with triangular wings. It has strange markings all over.
"Batman, the unknown aircraft is approaching fast!" Robin's voice trembled in the inter-comm.
Batman grunted and walked towards the Bat-sub (1). "I'm going in. Make sure that everything is clear here above." He said as he entered the sub.
"Roger that." Batgirl's voice came.
Batman buckled himself up. The ignition of the submarine came to life. He checked all coordinates sent by the Martian Manhunter. He typed a few codes before setting off to position himself near the estimated area of the crash land.
Underwater plants and tiny specs were seen as the Bat-sub made its way in the dark, murky water. Batman gripped the wheel tighter and opened two more front lights. He tapped a few buttons before the sub surged forward with more speed.
A flash from of the screens on his left caught his attention. He made a quick glance before, once again, gaining more speed to his designated area.
Three minutes
Three minutes before the aircraft crash lands.
He pushed a blue button and spoke. "Batgirl and Robin, be on guard we only have three more minutes."
He released the button and steered the wheel to the right. He travelled a few more meters before setting the sub and preparing his diving suit but not before looking at the screen again.
59 seconds
It's time.
Robin continued to watch the aircraft as it descends faster. He then surveyed the area to see if there were any civilians. Luckily, there was none. He moved a few feet away from where he was and observed the aircraft once more.
He lowered his binoculars and gripped it tighter. He hoped that everything will go as Batman planned.
Batgirl surveyed the area within the radius Batman had given her. So far, she managed to warn people and clear the area. She checked her wrist watch and saw that they only have less than a minute before the crash land.
Before she could move an inch, a blinding light covered the area followed by the sound of a huge object colliding with the bay.
Savage grinned as the aircraft crashed. He straightened his posture even further as he watched it sink into the bay. He turned to his acquaintances when the bay started to envelop the aircraft. "I think that's our cue." He said to them. His steely eyes then fixed itself towards the Furies.
"You know what to do."
The Furies grinned and nodded before jumping to their designated place.
Once they were out of sight, Klarion approached Savage, Teekl on his shoulders and his eyes fixed on where the Furies were before.
"I swear if this mission fails I will ripped your head off." He said.
Savage chuckled. "I doubt they will fail."
Batman swam towards the now destroyed aircraft. He took out a flash light and avoided the floating debris and started to examine the aircraft up close. The markings all over it seemed to be writings, just like the hieroglyphics in Egypt. He lifted his hand to touch them. It felt rough under his touch. He continued to observe it until a green light caught his attention. He quickly swam to the direction of the light and saw several lime green rocks glowing. He grabbed one and rubbed his thumb over it.
Batman's eyes widened at a realization.
A sudden beep brought him back to reality. He checked his holographic computer and saw the word INTRUDER blinking. He turned his attention to the Bat- sub as it suddenly fired up and sped away. He put the rock in his utility belt and swam to catch up. Seeing that it would only be a waste of time and energy, he grabbed his grappling hook and shot it to the bottom of the submarine.
His body was pulled forward by the force. In a few minutes, he found himself on the surface. The sub (which now resurfaced with him) still continued to move forward. His eyes widened behind the cowl as he saw the pier before them. He pushed the distress button, alerting his two companions of what was about to happen.
Batgirl and Robin were already in position when they received Batman's distress signal— Batgirl on the right part and Robin on the left. They both saw the approaching submarine and readied their gadgets to stop it.
Batgirl was the first one to throw her Bat-a-rangs. Three of the Bat-a-rangs stabbed the nose of the submarine while the other two stabbed the engines on both sides of it. Once she gave a thumb up, Robin threw his bird-a-rangs. When it hit the water, it produced a kind of bubble and enclosed the submarine. Robin grinned and held up a remote. Batgirl fired her grappling hook to swing to the other side, grabbing Batman in the process. After landing beside Robin, the boy pressed the remote and electricity encompassed the enclosed submarine. Finally, the submarine came to a slow halt just before it hit the pier.
The trio stared at the submarine before going down to see the intruder. Batman nodded to Robin, a sign that the boy could open the hatch. Slowly, Robin opened the hatch and went inside. He saw a figure hunched across the front seat. He stepped closer to it, but was suddenly startled when a fist connected to his jaw. After his body collided with the titanium wall of the submarine, Batman entered the hatch, holding the glowing rock in front of the culprit. The culprit— a female as they saw, suddenly fell onto her knees. Batgirl, whom now helping Robin on his feet, stared as the girl slowly falls into unconsciousness.
Once the girl passed out, she turned to her mentor. "Is this—?"
Batman nodded, cutting her off.
Robin chuckled before commenting, "Well, Superman would be happy to find out about this."
After Batgirl changed the female Kryptonian's clothes, Batman cuffed the latter's hands with a special pair of cuffs (which Robin had commented "Made for the Superman Apocalypse event his mentor prepared for). Batman carried the girl like a bride before turning to his apprentices. "Did you already informed J'onn about this?" he asked.
Batgirl nodded. "He said he'll ready the medical bay for her. He also said that it would be better if you tell Superman about this— girl." She said with hesitancy in the end.
"Should we also tell Superboy about this?" Robin suddenly asked.
"Superboy or Superman, it wouldn't make any difference, because you wouldn't be taking the girl with you at all."
The three turned around and saw Savage and Klarion, but what astonished (or rather, scared) them the most was the three female warriors that suddenly came out of nowhere to surround them.
Batman clenched his jaws. "Siding with the God of Apokolips now?" he asked.
Savage laughed. "It's a little bit more than that." He explained with a gleam of malice in his eyes.
Batgirl and Robin safely placed (and locked in) the female inside the Batmobile before putting themselves in a defense stance.
"We will never give her to you." Batgirl said with authority.
"This isn't about giving." Klarion stated before a smirk appeared on his face. "It's about taking."
"Furies, destroy them."
Batman saw a metallic ball coming to him from the corner of his eye. He jumped away just in time before it hits him. His eyes widen when he saw that the ball created a crater on the land it hit. He landed softly and met the eyes of the owner of the weapon.
Lashina smirked at the Dark Knight's reaction. She, using her right hand, motioned the whip back at her and grabbed the ball with the same hand. She tossed it for a few times, her smirk never leaving and her eyes giving the message most villains would say.
Show me what you got.
Batgirl dodge the pristine swords lunging at her— left, right, up, down. She couldn't find an opening to go on offense. She jumped, slid down and rolled away, only to get back up and see the blonde Fury at her once again. 'She's good.' Batgirl thought as she continued to dodge the attacks.
Gilotina swung her left sword to the right.
Batgirl saw her chance.
Batgirl ducked down and aimed her left fist to the Fury's stomach. But before her fist could connect to the Fury's stomach, the Fury's left knee collided with her jaw. She lost her balance and fell face first at the impact.
Gilotina felt satisfied as the hero nursed her jaw. She twirled her right sword before walking towards the fallen hero.
She never felt so good.
If there's one thing Robin knew about the Furies— it was that they were always on offense.
He remembered one time, a few years back; Batman and Superman were talking about these Furies and their tactics in a battle. Apparently, Furies were trained under the infamous Granny Goodness or sometimes Darkseid himself. And they were never, ever, taught to go on defense. They should always be on the offense to gain the upper hand.
So why— why, oh, why, as his mind exclaimed— was he the one on defense, and not on offense?
Simple; as soon as the two Furies attacked his team, Robin was cornered by this Fury. He quickly put on his guard up and positioned himself on defense. A few minutes passed and she still stood there— her hands on her sides, her shoulders slightly erect and her head was just there— staring at him!
Annoyed at the sudden thought that she might be degrading his skills and abilities, he first attacked. He threw punches, kicks and even combination moves Batman and Nightwing taught him but all she did was dodge his attacks like a dance.
He was aggravated.
He was aware that Batman and Batgirl were slowly losing their fight. He was well aware also that he will lose this fight as well. The fact that this Fury just treats him like a weakling also adds up to his aggravation.
Besides, they can't lose because if they do, Savage takes away the girl.
He had witnessed and felt the power of the Kryptonian girl. Powerful— that was the only word that could describe it. And if this girl falls into the right hand, he couldn't imagine what could be the outcome of it.
He aimed a roundhouse kick to the Fury's skull. The Fury didn't make any movement and just stood there.
'This is it!' he thought.
Before his foot could hit the Fury's head, her hand shot up, catching it perfectly and without any effort. His eyes widened when he felt her hold tightened.
He was lifted in the air like a piece of rag doll and was tossed towards a direction he didn't know. His cry of pain was merged with a female one's when his back hit another body. When they painfully landed, he turned his head, his forehead touching the ground, and saw Batgirl's red hair. He and Batgirl tried to stand up, but Gilotina's menacing smirked stopped them.
Robin's eyes frantically looked everywhere to search for his opponent. He swallowed hard when he realized she was nowhere to be found.
"Give it up Dark Knight." Klarion's voice said. "Your teammates are down. I suggest you surrender too."
Batman grunted and saw his apprentices on the ground. He was conflicted. These Furies were far stronger than Superman describe. He clenched his fist and think of ways to outsmart them.
But then...
Time seemed to slow down.
Batgirl and Robin didn't move, their eyes widened as the scenario sank in their minds. Their bodies are immobile; they were petrified at what they saw— what they were seeing. Their mouths were open, but no words came out. They were silently screaming, hoping, praying that what they were seeing wasn't real.
A hand—
—A bare, blooded, female, hand went through the Dark Knight's chest.
Gem stayed behind Batman as he continued to tremble at the sensation of her hand through his body. She roughly pulled back her hand, enough to put her hand inside of him once again, and lifted him from there. She tiptoed before slamming his whole body to the ground, breaking the ground and a few of his bones.
Batman felt weak. He could feel his blood flowing out of him along with his life. The slam rattled his body and he swore all of his bones broke.
His body trembled as his killer lifted him from the ground by his collar. He stared at the angry- looking bird helmet that hid his killer's true identity. He felt the light being snatched away from him as she punched his face repeatedly.
He had never thought that his end would be in the hands of a legendary Fury.
He had never thought to die by a Fury's strength.
The two apprentices watched helplessly as Gem destroyed Batman. They knew that the Furies were powerful and merciless—
—but this was something that occurred to them.
For a Fury to actually kill a hero.
Batgirl whimpered and Robin shook as Gem punched the wound she inflicted a while ago. They tried to contain their tears but when they saw Batman's hand limply fell on his side they shouted, begged for the Fury to stop her assaults. She did.
But it wasn't the end of her brutality.
She dragged Batman's beaten form to the edge of the land, where the current of the bay was fast and deadly. She lifted him with one hand and threw the Dark Knight into the dangerous current.
Batgirl's cry of pain and Robin's shouts of anger resonated in the area. The two ignored the remaining Furies as they open up the Batmobile to take the unconscious girl. They ignored the smirk Savage has and the laugh that Klarion emits.
They ignored everything but the monster that killed their mentor.
"What. A. Show!" Klarion said with glee. "When Savage said to destroy them I never thought of that!" he added.
Savage nodded in acknowledgement as the two Furies held the girl with them. "Two birds with one stone, as one would say." He said as his gaze turned to Gem. "Brilliant work, Gem."
Gem didn't seem to hear him as she stared at the dishevelled members of the Bat-clan. Batgirl was crying as she stared into nothingness. Robin's face was contorted in anger and hatred, but stayed still in his position.
Klarion clapped his hands. "I really did enjoy the show. And I think it's time to take the final bow and give the last hoorah." He said and Teekl purred in agreement.
A portal opened behind them and Klarion was the first to get in. "I will go first. Boom tubes never did like me anyway. Hahaha!" he said as he took a step into the portal and disappeared. The two Furies didn't wait for Savage and Gem and followed Klarion into the portal, the girl in their hands.
Gem strode towards Savage, passing by the two fallen heroes. Savage stepped beside to give her access first, but when she stopped her motions he chuckled. "Respectful as ever I see. I will tell your Lord about this. He will be proud." He said as he stepped into the portal leaving her behind.
Gem turned her head sideways to see the duo. Batgirl was still in a state of shock and Robin was slowly standing up. She watched as his eyes showed her the anger and hatred he felt towards her. She seemed unfazed as she should be. He snapped.
"I will kill you!" He roared with hatred.
She tilted her head upwards as an indication or acknowledgement of his comment, and stepped into the portal.
Robin pushed himself as the portal began to shrink. He knew he shouldn't leave Batgirl behind, but the pain and hatred he was feeling was making him blind.
With a powerful jump, he entered the portal just before it disappeared.
