Wasabi groaned as he sat in his idling car outside the pawn shop he'd dropped GoGo off at a few days prior. "I told her 8:00," he muttered. "I mean, it's…8:04 already!" Wasabi begrudgingly turned the car off and stepped out of his car, still mumbling to himself.
He paused just shy of the door of the pawn shop. He looked at it up and down before taking a breath and pulling it open.
The inside was more or less what Wasabi had expected, although he'd never been in a pawn shop before. He made a snap judgement that this wasn't his favorite place to be, as he eyed a tower of bulky old TVs warily. Out of the corner of his eye, he swore he saw something small scurry under a rack of fur coats.
Wasabi suppressed a shudder and walked deeper into the store. Sitting along the back wall was a counter with a register and a bell sitting alongside a pile of, well, junk. He tapped the bell, eyes roaming around the wall behind the counter.
"Can I help you?" A slight, older man stood before him. He had dark hair spotted with gray, and almond-shaped brown eyes very similar to those of someone else Wasabi knew.
"Er-hi!" Wasabi stammered, "I was looking for GoGo."
"Ah! Are you one of her friends from university?" the man asked with a smile, voice very level and soft. "Come, come."
Wasabi followed the man through a door into the back of the shop. It appeared to be an office of sorts, with a large wooden desk sitting in a corner covered in heaps of papers. There were a few well-worn armchairs crammed around a round coffee table; that too was littered with papers.
"Please sit," the man said before turning and leaving the room through another doorway. Wasabi did as he was told, perching gingerly on the edge of one of the chairs. He turned his head, eyeing the collection of papers and receipts scattered on the table in front of him. His instinct was to reach out and begin straightening them into piles, but his manners kept him from messing with them.
The man returned carrying a tray laden with a teapot and two cups. He expertly held the tray in one hand as he swept the papers onto half the table, before setting the tray down. He poured a cup of tea and handed it to Wasabi before pouring himself one.
Wasabi sniffed the cup. He wasn't much of a tea drinker, usually preferring drinks with a bit more caffeine in it, but he didn't want to be rude. He took a small sip and looked up at the man in front of him.
The man smiled kindly. "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I haven't introduced myself. My name is Sora Tomago. I'm GoGo's father."
Wasabi eased into his chair a little more as Sora sipped his tea. "My name is Wasabi. I'm a student at San Fransokyo Tech with your daughter. I am giving her a ride into the lab today."
Sora laughed. "Well, I would say you are more of an early riser than my daughter is. She rarely leaves this early."
"Oh." Wasabi's shoulders fell a little. He hadn't really thought about when GoGo usually got to the lab when he'd decided on the time.
"Do not feel bad," Sora said, as if he could read Wasabi's thoughts. "It is good for her to be put on someone else's schedule for a change."
Wasabi smiled and took another sip of his tea.
GoGo was not in a great mood. Then again, was it even possible to be in a mood if you're not awake enough to string three words together into a coherent thought? All she knew that it was way too early to be awake.
GoGo shuffled through her morning routine like a zombie, and she brushed her teeth twice because she didn't remember doing it the first time. She scuffled down the stairs and grabbed at the pot of coffee her father always left out through partially-closed eyes. She shuffled into the living room, and. after staring for a few seconds, her eyes widened.
Wasabi was in the living room with her father, sitting at the desk, and sorting through papers.
GoGo, feeling pretty awake now, announced herself. "What are you doing here?"
Wasabi and Sora looked up. "I told you I would pick you up."
"But what are you doing here?"
Wasabi cocked his head and furrowed his brow. "I'm helping your dad balance the books."
Sora placed a kind hand on Wasabi's shoulder. "And doing a fine job, too. I never have the energy to sort through all these receipts. Excuse me." Sora brushed past GoGo, planting a kiss on her head before making his way into the kitchen.
GoGo felt her eye twitch. "Why didn't you wait in your car?" she asked, keeping her voice even and neutral.
"You were late," Wasabi answered, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. He glanced down at the desk, and then back up at GoGo. "I know you probably want to get to the lab, but…can I finish this up first?"
GoGo took a deep breath and huffed. "Fine." She collapsed into one of the armchairs and curled up around her coffee.
GoGo spent the better part of an hour sipping her coffee silently and watching her father interact with the boy that honestly…confused her. She'd been letting Wasabi get away with things that anyone else would have gotten an instant punch to the gut for. He was just so damn considerate. GoGo knew that things would eventually return to the way they had been, she just…needed to get him to stop doing things for her first.
Hiro walked into the lab, looking forward to spending the day with Baymax
"Good morning, Honey," he called out the direction of her chemistry corner.
"Hello, Hiro!" Honey responded, a little too loudly owing to the headphones she had in.
"Good morning, Fred."
"Greetings, fellow superhero!" Fred called over the comic he was reading.
Hiro had just gotten into his space in the back of the lab and set his bag down when the door crashed open.
"Wait, Hiro the hero!" Fred yelled. He ran in, dragging Honey behind him. "I have something to show you."
Fred pulled out his phone. "Now," he began dramatically, "what you see might shock and scare you, but please! Do not scream." Fred turned the phone screen toward Honey and Hiro's confused faces.
There was a picture of GoGo and Wasabi. Sleeping. On each other.
"Whoa," Hiro breathed. "How weird is that."
"That's exactly what I said!" Fred exclaimed. "Or, well, thought, because they were asleep, and I was trying to be quiet."
"Huh." Honey took the phone into her hands and zoomed in on the pairs' sleeping faces. "That does explain what I saw yesterday."
What did you see yesterday?" Fred prompted.
"Well, GoGo and Wasabi looked like they were out on a coffee date."
"Wait, I saw them together, too," Hiro added. "Wasabi was driving her somewhere."
"Do you know what this means?" Fred cried, and paused for effect. "They're under some form of mind control!"
Hiro walked to his desk and sat down. "What? No way."
"Yeah," Honey said thoughtfully. "They're probably just dating."
Hiro and Fred stared at Honey like se had something growing out of the side of her head.
"WHAT?"
Honey looked sheepish. "Well, it makes sense."
Hiro recovered first. "Yeah, except it's GoGo and Wasabi."
"Stranger things have happened," Honey said, before wandering back to her workstation.
Hiro glanced at Fred, who was still standing with his mouth agape. He didn't look like he was going anywhere anytime soon. Hiro shrugged before turning around and getting to work.
