Chapter 4
I couldn't stay in that house any longer. It was too depressing; I wanted to reach out to everyone so badly it physically hurt, as if that soc was shooting me every ten seconds. The air around me was warm; winters shadow finally fading away into spring, I took a deep breath and walked the streets around me. It was odd, two days I would be terrified to walk these streets alone, but I felt calm, no one could touch me anymore, no one could hurt me.
I kept walking and found myself in the soc territory; I felt my body tense, out of habit. I was a greaser, I didn't belong on this side of town, but I was and I wasn't scared even though I should have been. The area was starting to fill with socs; I scanned the area trying to find the one who killed me, the one who wanted to kill one of my brothers. I kept walking through the town, brushing shoulders with everyone around me but no one turned around to pummel me which was nice for a change.
"I can't believe he's really dead" a soft voice mumbled. I turned and saw Cherry Valance standing by herself, her red hair was blowing in the soft breeze, and her green eyes were larger than normal. I remember in class we sat together, and sometimes she would talk to me. In a way we were good friends, but it was still strange seeing her reaction to me being dead.
Just then a soc walked up to her, and her face transformed in front of my eyes, she didn't look sad anymore, she looked friendly and open, almost happy. The soc she was standing with had his back to me, he was taller than Cherry, with long broad shoulders, and jet black hair, his arms were long and pale, they were stretched out pulling her into a hug. For a second our eyes met, and I smiled at her.
I turned to walk away when I "bumped" into another soc, this one looked familiar but I couldn't remember why he would. He was tall with brown hair, and brown eyes. He looked average like any other person, with strong muscles, and a determined look to his face, he walked towards Cherry and the soc and leaned against the wall beside Cherry. I stood there for a second, then the black haired soc turned to face him and then the realization slammed into me like a brick wall. It was the soc that killed me; the guy with him was the one who caught me while I was running.
I walked closer trying to pick of pieces of their conversation, but their voices were kept low. Cherry was listening, to them yet her eyes seemed to be getting angry. I stood beside her leaning my shoulder against hers to get a better shot of what these socs were talking about.
"I saw the police take away his body, they couldn't get all the blood stains off the streets" the brown haired soc sneered.
I could feel Cherry's body tense, like she wanted to snap at them but didn't have the courage to do it. Her black haired soc was smiling, clearly pleased with the outcome of my death.
"We wanted to leave those Curtis's a message, and that's exactly what we did. Now we just need to make a plan of when to strike again, and this time get the right one" black hair guy said. He was glaring at his pal though; clearly he thought I was the right brother.
"Yeah, I got it Jet" the brown haired soc mumbled,
"You better get it, Blake! I don't plan to get caught by the fuzz; this isn't a job to take lightly. We get it right the first time, not the second or third! Mess this up again and you're going to be the one bleeding out on the streets got it?" Jet snapped.
Blake nodded, going slightly pale, but the look in his eyes looked angry. He didn't like being made a fool of in front of other socs,
"So what is the plan then Jet? How do we get this Curtis alone?" Blake demanded.
Jet thought about that for a second, I was partly surprised he let Blake talk to him like that; I guess he was too caught up in a plan to realize.
"We know one leaves for work earlier than the other, and in that second he's alone. If we surround the walk way, or block his car we can kill him on the spot. Quick easy, and we're already at a distance that we can take off before anyone notices" Jet suggested.
Blake nodded, and smiled, clearly agreeing with Jet's plan, and then I realized something. Only one of my brother's went to work alone, and left before the other. That was Darry, Jet and Blake were going to kill Darry, and there was nothing I could do to stop them, or warn my brother.
