~Chapter 4: A Mother's Worry~
Oh don't worry Toph, once I get out of here.." "You daughter will be the first and last thing you will ever see.."
I hear these words echo through my mind.
I go to my office and close the door gently. Slowly I start to lean against the door. I lower my head down trying to relax and stay calm. However those words get the best of me as the tears keep coming down.
Wiping away the tears I wander towards my desk and see the picture of me and Lin smiling. I then start to pick up the phone and start to dial Katara's number. It may be a feeling of being over protective but I guess that's what a parent has to do and that is to protect the ones you love.
Katara picks up the phone. She greets me with a friendly and asks me what is wrong. I stare at the window outside not paying attention.
"Hello?" Toph?"
"Oh, Hi Katara. I just wanted to check on how Lin is doing."
"She is doing fine, she is actually playing with Tenzin. The two are actually getting along just fine."
"That's good." Um I was wondering if I could talk to her."
"Yeah sure hang on."
I hear the sound of static and then the sound of Lin's voice
"Mommy?"
"Hi sweetie, what are you doing?"
"Nothing… Is something wrong?"
"No,, No.. Everything is fine." I just want to say I love you and I'm thinking about you."
"I love you too mommy."
"Be good and don't forget to show Tenzin what a true Beifong is made of!"
Lin starts to giggle
"Don't worry I will bye."
I hang up the phone and start to feel better. I now realize that Lin is safe. I start to go to the closet and pull out an old box.
I blow off the dust and open the box. I stare at the championship belt that I won at Earth Rumble Six.
"I don't have to be afraid anymore." I know what I must do."
A police officer opens the door as I close the box quickly.
"Chief Bei Fong. The prisoner is ready to talk to you."
I nod and start to put the box away. I stare at it and close the door shut.
I realize now why I took this job as chief of police and that is to protect the ones I care for most and I won't let anyone get to me no matter how painful it is.
