Dark Hearted Hero: Champion of the Eternal Night
Chapter Three: Awaken in a New Land
It had been two months since the death of Beastboy and things hadn't gotten any better for the team.
Starfire had completely locked herself away in her room. Not coming out to eat or even join in on missions. Raven came out to assist on missions but once they were done, she would retreat back into her room as well.
Robin decided that the pair could use the grieving since their powers were more tied into their emotions and instead decided to bring in Kid Flash, Jinx and his good friend Zatanna into the main Titan team.
The growing pains were a little tough but the team managed to jell together. Robin just hoped when Starfire and Raven were ready, they would meld well with them as well. "I still can't believe it man. It's been two months and he's still gone," Cyborg said as he took a sip of his hot chocolate.
"I know. It's like a bad dream," Robin said sullenly.
"You think he'd come in here with some lame as joke which would somehow still make us laugh but nothing," Cyborg said.
"Any word on Raven?" Robin asked him.
"Nothing yet. I've been leaving food at her door and recently the plates I've bought to her have been empty so she's eating again. What about Star? Any luck talking to her?" Cyborg asked.
"Nothing…She's been eating but that's about it. I didn't expect her to take his death so hard," Robin said with a frown.
"I mean she was pretty close to him. He put in the most work in getting her acclimated to Earth," Cyborg said. "Next to you of course."
"Well at least Terra is with family now," Robin said. A few days after Beastboy's death, Terra's older brother Geo-Force showed up to Jump City to retrieve her as well as pay his respects to the fallen green Titan and vowed to them that she would heal.
"Yeah. Hard to believe she's a princess. BB would have loved that," Cyborg said with a grin on his face.
Robin nodded and tapped the table with his knuckle and muttered "I just don't get it. Slade did all of this to kill Beastboy…It's unfathomable."
"He must have realized something that we didn't about him…" Cyborg said.
"And to make it worse. He hasn't shown his face since. All of his hideouts are abandoned. This is truly frustrating," Robin said angrily before it gave way to sadness. "He was our brother Cy...and we can't even get revenge for him…This hurts…"
Cyborg nodded and let a tear fall down his face as he replied "Yeah…it truly does…"
"Starfire… You are my light. Weird thing to say, I know but you are. Since the moment we met, you've been this beacon of light. Always cheerful, always hopeful and never failing to bring a smile on my face. You crash landing here was the best thing that could have happened to not only me but to all of us. You really are the heart of the Titans."
"Beastboy…" Starfire whispered softly as tears fell down her face, her eyes locked on a picture she and Beastboy had taken at the first trip to the mall. She let out a small laugh when she stared down at her form. She looked so confused at everything.
From the cute pink and white floral walls to the large goofy red and white stripped hat that had fallen over her eyes and next to her was Beastboy, wearing an easy-going smile on his face and that familiar sparkling of happiness in his eyes.
Out of all the pictures she had taken throughout her time here, this was her favorite one and it was the one that she kept by her bed…And despite how their friendship would end, she kept it close to her heart.
Starfire held the picture close to her chest as she curled up into a ball while her communicator sat beside her head. She knew that this wasn't healthy for her to keep replaying his final words but she couldn't stop herself from doing it.
It was the only way she could still hear his voice.
He was her Milnip Wusserloop…She knew this but this pain, it felt so much…harsh than when she lost her true Milnip Wusserloop in Ryan'dr.
"I miss you…" Starfire whimpered as she pressed play on the Communicator once again, her tears continuing to fall down her face.
"Starfire… You are my light. Weird thing to say…"
"How long is she going to stay in here?!" Rage muttered with a sneer as Knowledge peered up from her book. "She's been in here day in and day out for two months. If not for Brave taking over her body, she wouldn't even be eating. It's pathetic Knowledge!"
"You are angrier than usual," Knowledge noted as she closed her book, which held a picture of Beastboy on it with his familiar goofy smile.
"Beastboy is dead and gone! He's never coming back!" Rage shouted as she paced back and forth, as she had been for the past hour. "And yet I feel angry about it. Hell, that's an understatement. I feel furious!"
"It could be you are like the rest of us and are miss-" Knowledge began.
"Don't you dare say those words!" Rage interrupted harshly. "I don't miss him! He was a pain in my ass. Always had been, always will be…But why am I so mad?!"
Knowledge let out a small sigh and turned to Love, who held Raven's head in her lap, tenderly rubbing her hair and said "You chose a really fine time to come here Love."
"I didn't expect to be brought to life during all of this Knowledge," Love responded bitterly with a shake of her head.
"I shouldn't have looked what he said…I knew he spoke Swahili…I shouldn't h-have…" Raven shut her eyes and began to sob violently. "Why did I fall in love with him? Why did I risk it? I should have never risked it."
"How long as she been repeating that?" Knowledge asked.
"Since three this morning," Love replied softly.
Brave ran into the small chamber and said "Status report. Starfire is in the same state as Raven. Robin and Cyborg are also feeling down."
"Thank you Brave…Have you eaten for Raven?" Love asked.
"I have. Chicken and rice, our favorite," Brave replied.
"Good, you may bring Fear and Sadness in. I'm ready for them," Knowledge said.
"You two are going to burn yourselves out dealing with us all," Brave said as she crouched down beside Knowledge, who leaned against her shoulder. "But thank you. I'll help as much as I can to take the edge off you guys."
"Just rest for now," Knowledge said. Brave sat down fully beside Knowledge and said to Anger "Oi! Relax a bit. I know you're pissed and I'll fight you to let off some steam a bit later."
Rage looked towards Brave and sneered before she looked away. "No…I won't stop until I find that bastard's soul and torture him for putting us through this pain…" Knowledge then saw a single tear of blood fall from Rage's eye as she said "Damn bastard…"
"You are now my champion Garfield Mark Logan…It is time for you to become stronger to show it…."
Beastboy opened his eyes and found himself in a soft, lush bed. He leaned up and saw that his chest had been bandaged up but there was a faint glowing black feather beneath the bandages.
The mark of the Raven Queen.
Beastboy slid out of bed and took a step out of bed but his leg buckled and he fell to the ground in pain. Beastboy pushed himself to his feet and stumbled forward and leaned against the door frame, sweat pouring from his body.
Where was he?
"You're finally awake," A voice said from beside him.
Beastboy turned his head to the right and saw a large muscular woman with pale skin and long flowing black hair that slowly changed into a dull gray, her emerald green eyes staring daggers into his soul.
She wore thick black leather armor on her chest and black tights with two large blades attached to her back and a single knife holstered on the right side of her hip. "When I was resurrected to assist you in growing stronger, I didn't expect you to be so scrawny and green," the woman said as she pushed herself from the wall.
"My name is Talithia. The Raven Queen's first champion and the one most imbued with her powers. I will be training you from here on. Injured or not," Talithia gave him a sneer and walked down the steps before she turned to look at him with impatience.
"Well?" She questioned. "I don't have all eternity. Get a move on." Talithia then turned away and continued to walk down stairs.
Beastboy narrowed his eyes and held his side as he followed her slowly and once he made it to the main floor of he realized was a house, a large sword was headed straight towards his head and if not for his speed, his head would have been split in half.
This theory was founded when the large sword splintered the thick wooden wall behind him. "What are you doing?!" Beastboy exclaimed to Talithia, who stared at him from a distance with an amused smirk.
"Reflex test: Pass," Talithia stated. "Now grab the weapon. We train."
Rain: And that ends this chapter. The next chapter will focus on Beastboy's training and will include time skips so until then…
Mario: See you next time!
