When school had started, Massie Block had dreaded everything and just wanted it to come to an end. She was unfocused all day. All of her teachers wondered why she was so impatient and insisted on leaving quickly. They knew she always wanted her classes to end, but not this much.

What Massie was worrying about was that she would have to tell Derrick that she was leaving. And not just leaving, but moving to Washington D.C for a boarding academy. And she was scared on how he was going to react. Would he be happy? Angry? Upset? All of these questions floated around in her mind as she walked towards his locker on the bottom floor of the school. Massie took a deep breath and prepared herself for what was to come.

"Derrick?" Massie called. He extracted two binders and pulled his head out of his locker, smiling with his toothy grin and wiggling his butt at her.

"Hey, sweetheart. What's up?" Now or never.

"You're leaving?" Derrick echoed.

Massie had taken him outside of the school and sat them both down under the tree where she and the Pretty Committee usually met before school started. Slowly, she nodded her head, tears streaming down her beautiful face.

"I'm going to miss you so much," she choked out.

He grabbed her hand and tightly closed it in his. In that touch, she could sense the pain that he felt. It broke her heart.

"I'm gonna miss you too Block. Pinkie-promise to keep in touch with me?"

Massie giggled at his immaturity. "Pinkie-promise."

Their fingers interlocked within each other, shaking gently. She softly kissed the tip of his nose, picked up her purse, and ran to the silver Range Rover that was waiting for her, without looking back at the love of her life. She would miss Derrington so much, but she had a new school to look forward to.

She could explore. Experience new things. And she wouldn't think about Derrick at her school. Because every thought would remind her how badly she wanted to go home, or, more importantly, back to Derrick.

She had pinkie-promised him to stay in touch. But she had secretly crossed her fingers behind her back. Not because she didn't want to talk to him anymore, but because she loved him, and never wanted to let him go.

She couldn't help fearing that other girls would have to someday cope with this heart-ache too.
