Thanks.
Lily had just opened the door, tentatively leaning on the wooden frame as she scanned the large Common Room. She hadn't seen James, but he had certainly seen her. The Head Girl had her wild ginger hair in loose curls down past her shoulders, just reaching the low cut, strapless, lacy green dress that outlined her curves perfectly, but still gave her freedom to move. James' stare stayed transfixed on the girl as she tred carefully across the carpeted floor; her high heels giving her an advantage to see over the heads of some of the shorter boys. As the other years started to come down from the dormitories-all dressed up and ready for the night's proceedings-it became harder for James to see the girl of his dreams, as she got swallowed up by the mass of excited students; lost in the crowd of many restless heads.
Music started, the old gramophone sitting in the furthest corner suddenly springing to life as Sirius stated handing out drinks, pouring the contest of the many bottles into transfigured cups and passing them around the room. James gave up at trying to catch another breathtaking glance at Lily Evans and turned to Peter, who was still standing behind him; gaping at the heavily made up girls that stood in his vicinity.
"You look like a fish!" James laughed as he watched Peter's unblinking stare at the particularly long legs belonging to a fifth year.
"Why do that have to look so much better out if their uniform!" Peter answered, putting his tongue back in his mouth and somewhat reluctantly turning to look up at James.
"Now that, my friend, I can not answer." James laughed, putting his arm around his shorter friend's shoulder and steering him towards Sirius; who was currently being swarmed by a large group of first years who he was refusing to give alcohol to.
"Guess who can't stop staring at you." Annie smiled, staring past Lily's shoulder at a handsome, dark skinned boy in the year below.
"Who?"Answered Lily, turning her head quickly at the direction in which her friend was looking, then quickly back again. "Do you think?"
"Who?" Piped up Afshan craning her neck around Lily's back to have a look to where the other girls were indicating.
"Yeah, deffo!" Annie answered Lily, ignoring Afshan's persistent questioning of who the girls were referring too.
"Well then." Lily smirked, raising her eyebrows and biting her lip seductively at her friend, slowly hatching up her dress to reveal a little but more leg.
"You like him?" Annie winked, smiling wildly as she continued to glance at the sixth year who's eyes were strained on Lily.
"I don't know him." Lily answered, chancing a quick glance back at the boy.
"Who?" Afshan questioned again, turning fully in the general direction of where the other girls kept looking.
"That lad over there!" Annie answered, slightly irritated.
"I can't see him." Afshan wined, craning her neck slightly.
"Look for the only one who's staring at us!" Laughed Lily, taking a sip of her drink as she made sudden eye contact with the boy in question, before moving her gaze elsewhere.
"Oooh! Yeah he's definitely checking you out Lils!"
"Keep your voice down Af!" Giggled Lily, turning the girl by the shoulder so she wasn't staring back at the watching eyes.
"He's so hot!" Laughed Afshan, resisting the urge to turn back and look at him again.
"I don't see it." Lily said plainly, examining the label on her bottle of Butterbeer.
"You deffo do!" Annie exclaimed with a shriek, her face lighting up with astonishment as she glanced back at the figure, who seemed to have disappeared amongst the crowd, looking put out slightly, she turned back to Lily, who was a pale shade of pink.
"I've never seen him before." Afshan breathed out, taking a swig of her drink.
"Me neither." replied Annie.
"He's probably just changed over the summer." Shrugged Lily, looking back up at the two girls who were now staring at her with grins spread across their faces.
"So you do like him?!" Shrieked Afshan joyfully.
"I never said that!" Lily answered in a high pitched giggle.
"Hmm." Annie looked at her with a great deal of interest for the minutes to come, as the conversation was drifted off rather forcefully by Lily.
"I want to go and talk to that one." Sirius was pointing with his little finger-the rest of his hand was wrapped around a glass of Firewhiskey-to a girl standing only a few feet away from them, grinding against an older boy in time to the loud music.
"Oh come off it, she's with someone!" James exclaimed, checking out the young girl's figure himself.
"Look at the way he isn't touching her arse-if they were together he would be straight in there. No physical contact at all." Sirius concluded, taking a swig of his drink and leaning casually against the back of a chair that stood behind them.
"Go on then. I'll give you 5 house points if you manage to sleep with her." Potter grinned, turning a hand to his friend as he laughed at the highly unlikely possibility.
"You're on mate!" Smirked Sirius, shaking James' hand conclusively before standing up fully and strutting towards the dancing pair.
James watched with doubtful eyes, shaking his head in amusement as he saw Sirius whisper in the blonde's ear. Standing only a little bit away from the dancing girl was Lily. The red head caught James' eye almost immediately. She was laughing with her friends in a small alcove near the dancers now James has spotted her, he couldn't take his eyes off her. She was, in his opinion, the most beautiful girl in the room. With every sip of his drink, she became even more perfect. The room was starting to spin as the night got longer and the moon got lower and lower in the sky, but the party showed no sign of finishing-but, still, James could not pluck up enough courage to go and ask Lily to dance with him; he didn't have the nerve of Sirius. On more than one occasion, James had seen other boys looking at Lily in a much too friendly way, and it took all his will power not to go over to them and knock their lights out. In fact, it took so much will power to distract himself from her that he took up the offers to dance with different girls, and even got a few invitations to take things further-but he knew what Lily would have said if he'd have even kissed a younger student.
The night still went on, with any sign of going to bed fading from Lupin's sight. It was so late now that only the older years were left, the N.E.W.T students integrating together with a small number of the fifth years, who looked ready to pass out any second. An empty bottle was situated in the middle of the floor; Sirius had the blonde girl who he had started dancing with earlier in the night-Claudia-on his knee, laughing loudly as he reached over her slim body and spun the bottle lazily.
"Devon!" Claudia called out excitedly as the bottle came to a halt in front of the dark boy that still couldn't keep his eye off a certain red head. The boy smiled, and watched in anticipation as the bottle was spun again in order to determine who he would kiss.
'So that was his name' Lily thought to herself, zoning out completely to think about how much the name suited him, and actually just how attractive he was.
Afshan's voice brought her back to the real world, "It's going to be Lily!" Afshan giggled as the bottle slowed down to her left.
It was only then that she realised that she had been staring at him. And he had noticed.
"Yeah it is." James commented begrudgingly as the bottle came to a halt in front of the head girl.
Suddenly Devon was coming towards her; his cheek bones really were perfect, he even had a jaw lineā¦his beautifully lined face was now inches from hers, his eyes were a brilliantly bright blue, but suddenly his eyelid was closing and hiding the ocean from view, and suddenly his warm lips were on hers and she closed her eyes too, sinking back into the kiss. It must have only lasted two seconds, but it seemed like two hours. His warm, soft lips pressed only lightlyu onto hers, but that was enough. She wanted to stay there forever, but he was leaning back now.
And it was over.
She had to sit back down in her spot and try and act like she didn't really care at all. But she did, and she could feel a smile appearing on her face. And she could see one on his too. They made brief eye contact one last time as they sat back down in the opposite places, and then looked down to watch the bottle spin again.
"Lily again!" Sirius exclaimed as he followed the bottle with his eyes as it stopped.
"Again?" Lily groaned, rolling her eyes but still she kept a smile on her face as she watched the bottle spin. Secretly, she hoped it would be Devon again, but the way he was looking at her now, the kiss would probably happen later anyway.
"Don't act like you're not excited!" Annie laughed, nudging her friend.
"Is that James or me?" Peter's squeaky voice came from under a glass of ale as he looked down at the now still bottle that was pointing in the small gap between James and himself.
"I think it's you." James said to Peter quickly, taking an embraced glance at Lily.
"Ermmm..." Sirius, sliding Claudia gently off his leg, lent down to examine the end of the glass bottle, closing one eye as he followed the invisible line to determine who it was pointing nearer to.
"I think it's James." Claudia called, stroking Sirius' hair gently as he pushed the bottle forward with one hand.
"Yeah it is." Sirius concluded, sitting back up and taking another drink from the small pile that was left.
"Sure?" Said James questioningly, for some reason wishing it was Peter who got to kiss Lily.
"Oh it doesn't matter!" Lily laughed, ushering James up with one hand as she shuffled on her knees towards the middle of the circle. Reluctantly but excited, James pushed himself up into his knees and met Lily in the centre, and didn't meet her eyes before pushing his lips onto the urgency, his lips were soft and gentle, parted only slightly, but with no rush to get any tongue action.
And as soon as it came, it was over, and James hid his face as best as he could as he went back to his space, running his hand messily through his hair.
"Another round?" Afshan asked from beside Lily.
"Erm, yeah go on," Answered Sirius as he pushed himself backwards, so he was lying on the floor with his arms cushioning his head from the hard floor. "Someone else spin though." Sirius reached out for Claudia's slender hand that was touching his lower leg warmly, and pulled the girl towards him, asking her without words to join him on the floor-where they started to kiss passionately as Claudia straddled his hips unexpectedly.
Taking charge, Afshan grabbed the bottle from the middle and spun it quickly, with the group moving their head in sync with the spinning bottle.
"Bonnie I think it's you!" Lily exclaimed, smiling at her friend, who had suddenly gone bright red. The game went on without James noticing. His name wasn't called again, and for this he was glad, as his mind really wasn't in it. He was elsewhere, thinking about that small and insignificant kiss with Lily that even still left him breathless. He wanted nothing more than to feel them lips again.
Elsewhere in the room, Sirius and Claudia where still lying heaped on the floor, kissing passionately, with Sirius groping the girl's breast from under her dress,
"You know, you could be my favourite one night stand." The older boy moaned deeply as they got rougher with each other, mainly being ignored by the others in the room, who were laughing and playing another drinking game; Never Have I Ever.
"Only one night?" Claudia cooed from under the boy, audible enough for the others to here.
"Please! Si, get a room!" James rolled his eyes and cast a disgusted look to his best friend.
"We're already in a room!" The other boy answered.
"Oh just use the dorm Sirius! I was only joking when I banned you from it!" Remus shouted over.
And with that, the two of them scrambled to their feet at ran up the steps to the boy's dormitories', where the two continued to giggle and laugh.
"Ugh, I'd never do something like that." Devon commented.
"No one asked your opinion." James snarled under his breath, leaning back onto his elbows. He had seen the glances that boy had been giving Lily; and he saw how Lily was looking back. And their kiss had definitely lasted longer.
"Leave him alone!" Lily snapped back at James, God, that woman had ears like a bat.
"What were you saying Devon?" Annie asked with a smirk, glancing slightly at Lily as she looked back at the dark boy.
"Just that I'd never be that disrespectful."
"What are you saying about my mate?" James had suddenly got to his feet, all the jealousy that had been boiling up inside him throughout the night, mixed with the alcohol, had suddenly poured out of him. "How dare you call my best mate disrespectful! Who are you anyway?! Bastard!" James spat at the boy as he towered over him.
"James!" Lily shrieked, clapping her hand to her mouth as the boy swore.
Devon was still sitting down, looking up nervously at the Head Boy. "A-Alright, sorry mate, I didn't mean it like that. Calm down."
"Don't tell me what to do! And don't call me mate! Take back what you just said!" James' arm swung out as he pointed his wand at the boy, but luckily Peter had stood up in just the amount of time to catch his elbow.
"You don't want to be doing that James." The smaller boy advised, trying to pull James away from Devon by his elbow.
"Not until he takes back what he said about Sirius." James was shaking now, his fists still clenched around his wand as he managed to get his elbow from Peter's grasp.
"Look, Potter, I'm sorry."
"You best be!"
"I am."
"Good. Well. That's okay then." James found himself at a loss, and struggled to find what he desired most-whether to sit down or walk into the dorm and just cry as the shocked face of Lily swam into his vision.
"Are you alright Devon?" The girl's soft voice was all that could be heard through the deadly silence in the room.
"Yeah I'm fine; I genuenlly didn't mean to say anything bad aboit Black. I just meant I wouldn't sleep with someone on the first date."
"That's so sweet." Lily smiled, nodding in agreement with the boy.
James couldn't stand it. Why was it that every boy other than him was allowed a chance with Lily Evans? He had loved her from the first time he had ever laid eyes on her. And yet, she still let this random boy, that she had never previously spoken two words too, come in and look at her like that.
He couldn't take much more of the lovey dovey glances the pair where giving each other, it was making him feel nauseous. Finally, he made his decision to leave the party and got to bed. And by the sound of Lupin telling the last stragglers to go to bed as James opened the Head dorm door, it seemed like he wasn't the only one who had lost the fun of the night.
