District Four

Triton Shell, 18

Marina Delmont, 17

Triton Shell's POV

I throw my spear at the moving dummy. It goes straight into its heart. So does the next one and the one after that. I don't really need to practice using a trident since this is my best weapon, so I move on to the survival skills station.

Most of the time, I just practice with weapons, but we'll probably run out of food at some point while I'm in the arena and I'll need to survive somehow. I stay at the survival skills station for two minutes before I get bored and move on to practicing all of my new moves that I have created over the past year. These moves will make my sister's victory look pathetic compared to mine!

She won the Hunger Games three years ago when she was thirteen. Now, all my parents can talk about is how amazing she is and how she is the youngest Victor in Panem and she always gets whatever she wants! Well, that's going to change very soon!

When I finish training, I don't feel like going right home, so I stop by the lake instead. I might as well practice swimming anyway, right? I swim up to the dock and back a couple times and notice a girl sitting at the dock fishing. A hot girl! I swim over to her and she is even prettier up close!

"Hey Beautiful!" I say, winking at her.

She sighs and turns towards me. "Can I help you?" She doesn't look too happy to see me...yet. Once she gets a closer look at me, she'll fall for me just like every other girl does.

"So, have you caught anything?" I ask.

"Yup." she says, pointing at a bucket beside her.

"Ah I see," I say. "Nice!" She doesn't reply.

"You know, I'm pretty good at fishing. Maybe we could go fishing together sometime." I suggest.

She frowns. "No, I like going fishing alone." It's hopeless.

"Ah, okay then." I say.

"Look, I have to go and get ready for the reaping now and you should do the same. Bye." she says.

"Okay. See ya!" I say. That was weird!

When I get home, I quickly eat breakfast and then take a shower and change into my reaping clothes. When I come downstairs, my parents are waiting at the kitchen table.

"You need to come home on time!" my mother says. "It's almost time to leave for the reaping!"

"Sorry Mom." I say. Wait! I don't see Ocean! It looks like she's not ready either!

"Where's Ocean?" I ask.

"Oh, she's still getting ready." my mom says. "You know how it is. She has to look extra nice now that's she's a Victor."

Ocean comes into the kitchen a minute later. "Sorry it took so long!" she says.

"You're even slower than I am!" I tease.

She rolls her eyes. "Thanks Triton!" she says.

"You look beautiful Honey!" my mother exclaims. "That colour looks so pretty on you!"

She smiles. "Thanks Mom!" I glower at her as we head to the car. Of course she gets away with not being ready on time! Just like how she gets away with everything else! Well, that's about to change!

Marina Delmont's POV

"Hey Barry! I'm home!" I say as I enter the house. He doesn't respond. He must be listening to headphones while he does his homework. I am about to go upstairs to change and shower when I notice the button on the answering machine flashing. It says that there are four new messages. That's odd. Who would be calling? I press the button the message starts playing,

"Hello, this is Mrs. Myrtle, the principal of Enfield Bay Elementary School. There was an incident today concerning Barry Delmont. He was attacked by some of his classmates. One of them had a knife and his eye was punctured. He has been taken to the school nurse's office. Please call back or come to the school as soon as you can. Thank you!"

At first, I just stare at the answering machine in shock. Barry has been bullied at school constantly since he was in grade one. I have been helping him to stand up for himself and it seemed as though things were improving. He has even made a few friends recently. I definitely never expected things to get this bad.

After taking a minute to process this, I start walking to Barry's school. Once I get there, I head straight to the nurse's office.

"Hi, I'm Marina Delmont. I'm Barry's sister." I say.

The receptionist nods and points in the direction of the office Barry is in. "Go down that hall and turn right." she says.

"Thanks!" I say, rushing down that hallway.

When I open the door to the office I was directed to, I see Barry laying down with a bandage over his left eye. He smiles at me weakly. "Hello, Marina." the nurse says. "I have assessed the damage and I have given him some medication for the pain. However, his eye could become infected which could cause him to completely lose vision in that eye and if it becomes severe enough, he could lose vision in his other eye as well. I would recommend taking him to the hospital to have it examined more thoroughly and at that point, he would be able to get a prescription for antibiotics for his eye."

I nod. "Okay, thank you!" I say.

How will we afford this? Ever since our parents died in a boat accident, the only income we have had is the money I make from fishing. I need to find a way to get the money for this somehow…

"Do you have to volunteer?" Barry asks sadly.

I nod. "It'll be okay." I reassure him. "I'll be back before you know it and I'll be able to pay for your medical bills. We'll even get to live in a nicer house! Won't that be fun?" I add.

I ended up using almost all of the money we had to pay for a doctor's appointment for Barry. It turned out that he needed surgery, so that cost even more money. We are now in a lot of debt and there is no other way that I can possibly pay for all of it. On the bright side, the doctors were able to fix Barry's eye and now he is simply recovering in the hospital.

He frowns. "I guess. Just make sure you win, okay?"

I smile at him. "Don't worry. I will!"

"Promise?" he asks.

"I promise." I say and give him a hug. I glance at my watch. "Now, Barry, I need to go fishing now, so I can make some money and catch something to eat for breakfast. I'll see you after I win the Hunger Games. Remember, if you get to leave the hospital before I win, then you will be staying with the Kellys. You like them, right? I love you and I'll be home before you know it! Goodbye, Barry!"

I try to avoid thinking about what could happen to Barry if I somehow don't win as I walk to the beach. This is easier once I get to the dock and start fishing. I try to simply focus on how many fish I am catching. This seems to work.

"Hey Beautiful!" I hear someone say. Is he talking to me?

I look up and see a tall boy with brown hair who is about my age smiling at me. Normally, I would be happy to talk to him for a few minutes, but I am in no mood to talk to anyone right now.

"Can I help you?" I ask, hoping he will take the hint and go away.

He chuckles. "So, have you caught anything?" he asks. I guess this won't be as easy as I thought.

"Yup." I say, pointing at the bucket of fish beside me and making sure to keep a straight face.

He grins. "Ah I see. Nice!" He pauses. "You know, I'm pretty good at fishing. Maybe we could go fishing together sometime."

Wow! This is hopeless. He really can't take a hint, can he? I sigh. "No, I like to go fishing alone." I say.

"Ah, okay then." He frowns. I think he finally gets it! Now, I can fish in peace! I glance at my watch. I guess that will have to wait until after I win the Hunger Games.

"Look, I have to go now and get ready for the reaping and you should do the same. Bye." I say to the strange boy who can't take a hint.

"Okay, See ya!" he calls after me.

Once I get home, I quickly try to find something nice to wear to the reaping. The dress I wore yesterday is still hanging over the back of my chair, so I guess I'll wear that. It looks nice enough for the reaping, I think. I briefly look in the mirror and then start walking to the village square.

Ocean Shell's POV

The only thing I can focus on as I make my way to the reaping with my family is the butterflies in my stomach. My parents and Triton are talking and laughing, but I'm not paying attention. All I can think about is the fact that Triton is going to volunteer this year.

I tried to talk him out of it, but he thinks that I'm just trying to stop him from having the 'glory' that I have. Honestly, being a Victor is not nearly as glamorous as Triton seems to think it is. I still have nightmares about the games, the president thinks she can make me do whatever she wants, and the reapings will be rigged against my future children.

This is not the biggest issue though. I do not think that Triton can win the Hunger Games. He is strong and quite skilled with tridents, knives, and axes, but he is also really impulsive and he goes for shock value. This is honestly one of the best ways to get killed in the arena. At least, I don't have to mentor him.

My friend, Aqua, who is also a Victor agreed to be the female mentor for District Four this year. I'm so glad I have Aqua. She has helped me to get through the worst parts of winning the Hunger Games at such a young age. While we don't share the same views on the Hunger Games - although she agrees that I was too young to volunteer for the Hunger Games and that I was not ready to be a Victor - we have a lot in common.

We both have parents who are obsessed with the Hunger Games and want all of their children to be Victors. We also both have siblings who are incapable of winning the Hunger Games. Luckily, in her case, her younger sister, Xena had no interest in volunteering for the Hunger Games. Her parents were really angry about this and threatened to kick her out of the house if she did not volunteer, so she decided to live with Aqua instead.

"We're here!" my father announces, interrupting my thoughts. We all get out of the car. I stand with my parents in the section for those who are ineligible to be reaped while Triton walks over to the eighteen year old's section and pushes his way to the front.

A few minutes later, our escort Crystal Waters skips onto the stage. "Hello District Four!" she says merrily. "How is everyone today?" People around me cheer. "It sounds like you're all excited for the reaping, so let's get this party started!" she yells.

"Now, let's select our female tribute-"

"I volunteer as tribute!" Triton yells, running towards the stage.

Crystal Waters grins. "Oh, how wonderful! What's your name?"

"Triton Shell!" he says.

"Oh, you must be Ocean's brother! You can't let her have all the glory, can you?" she grins. Triton frowns slightly.

"Anyway, now let's select our female tribute." she says. "Ella Sawyer!" she reads. A red haired girl starts to walk towards the stage from the fifteen year old's section, but a tall, dark haired girl rushes to the stage.

"I volunteer as tribute!" she says.

"Oh, lovely! Another volunteer! What's your name?"

"Marina Delmont." she says.

"Wonderful!" she says. "Now, why don't you two shake hands?"

"This year's tributes, everyone! Triton and Marina!" Crystal says as they shake hands. I just hope that Triton takes Aqua's advice and uses common sense for once. Then, maybe he could win and come home.

QOTC: What do you think of the possible career tributes so far?
