Chapter 4
"The Digital World looks so, dead. At least, the dark fields look so. It's nothing like I remember it to be before," Zoe said as she, Naomi and Koichi walked through the dark fields.
"Stop! Wait a minute!" Naomi called out to Zoe and Koichi, who were walking slightly ahead of her. She felt a little bit left out and remained behind them as they spoke about their past adventures. "I can't find it…"
"What's wrong- what can't you find?" Zoe replied, looking over her shoulder.
"I don't have my phone anymore. I think I must have left it on the train- I mean, the Trailmon. Sorry you two, but I got to go back and get it. You guys go ahead, keep going- and I'll catch you up." Naomi ran off before the others could reply.
"That reminds me," Zoe said, diving into one of her pockets and pulled out her mobile phone, as it was. "Oh, that's weird…"
Koichi noticed the girl's confused expression as she inspected her phone. "What's wrong, Zoe?" he asked, confused at how she was looking at every nook and cranny of her phone.
"Well, you might not know this, but when we came here the last time, out phones turned into the D-Tectors… So I don't know why they haven't again."
Koichi had a feeling that he knew exactly why Zoe was confused, and a little upset. "And you're worried that you won't be able to become Kazemon again. Well you shouldn't worry Zoe, I promise you it'll be okay…" Koichi muttered under his breath how much that he hoped it would be okay.
Also hoping that everything would be okay, was Takuya. He watched Nori with a close eye, but when he noticed that Tao had run off.
"J.P- you and Tommy should go after Tao," Takuya suggested.
"What about you, Takuya?" Tommy asked, looking at Takuya with a hard stare because he didn't want to hang around Tao- not after what happened last year.
"Me and Nori will go and do a little bit of exploring. Maybe show him the ropes." Takuya put his thumb up to Tommy. Quickly guys, Tao doesn't know much about this place, and you don't want him to freak out or hurt himself."
"Careful Takuya, people might begin to think that you've got a soft heart," joked J.P, showing his own softer lighthearted side as he ran after Tao.
Nori waited until they were out of sight. "Alright, guess I'll see you later…" He jumped down off the ledge and hopped onto the Trailmon.
Takuya rolled his eyes and followed after Nori, only to catch a glimpse of him leaping off the Trailmon as its doors closed and whisked Takuya away off the mountainside. He watched Nori waving sarcastically back at him, before going off in the opposite direction to the one that Tommy and J.P had followed Tao in.
Tommy and J.P had chased Tao until they found a crowd of SnowGoburimon gathered around a small fire having a squabble.
"I told you, I don't know who the last one is!"
"Well, we seem to be short of Royal Knights that can help us according to Chaosmon."
"That has to be because Chaosmon doesn't know the identity of the other Royal Knights… But if Chaosmon doesn't even know, how does he think us SnowGoburimon will know?"
"No- they must still be recovering at the primary village…"
"Well, we could go and talk to Swanmon. There must be a Trailmon station around here."
Tommy leaned closer to J.P. "What do you think that they are talking about, J.P?" he asked, keeping quiet and behind a cluster of snow covered rocks.
"Well I don't know, but when I hear the words 'Royal Knights,' I don't like the sound of it. I have to say I'd be much more comfortable if we weren't waiting around to be noticed," J.P replied, crouching down by a tree.
"So what are you guys going to do?" a voice asked from behind J.P and Tommy, making them jump.
"Tao- you shouldn't creep up on people like that…" Tommy squeaked.
"What creatures are they?" Tao asked, looking to J.P and completely ignoring Tommy.
"They are a Digimon called SnowGoburimon and they aren't really that tough…" J.P said, looking away to peer through the gap in the rock to see that the SnowGoburimon were no longer there.
"Who are you calling weak?" a voice behind the three boys called out.
They all froze, slowly turning around to see the three SnowGoburimon glaring down at them.
"Well, they must be spies," another of the three SnowGoburimon stammered, holding up his club. "Sent by Chaosmon's minions, the Gazimon!"
"What?" Tommy gasped. "We aren't with the Gazimon- I swear it!"
"Really? But how can we trust you?"
"Well you can. I'm telling you the truth… My name is Tommy. This is-"
"Wait," the SnowGoburimon interrupted Tommy. "You mean that you're called Tommy. Tommy as in Tommy the legendary warrior of the ice? Bokomon has told us all about you. And you must be Junpei- the thunder warrior…" The Digimon turned towards Tao with a puzzled look on its face. "Though Bokomon never said anything about a kid with round things over his eyes…"
"They're my glasses," Tao retaliated.
"Alright then, calm down then glasses…"
"Okay SnowGoburimon, you tell us what you were discussing over there and then we'll leave you alone…" J.P suggested.
Takuya couldn't believe that he had fallen for Nori's trick- especially when it was the very same trick that he and Shinya had used on their father during the Christmas holidays last year. Frustrated, he lashed out, kicking the Trailmon door.
"Ow- watch it, kid! This stop – the dark fields, end of the line, final stop!"
He stepped off the Trailmon and noticed a splash of colour in the dark and dead landscape – the girl that he had seen running at the Trailmon platform sitting on an old bench.
"Hey, erm, are you okay?" he asked, looking at her.
"I'm okay, Takuya…" she replied, not looking up.
"How do you know my name?" Takuya slowly sat down beside the girl.
"Because we sat next to each other in chemistry class at my old school… Even though I got the highest mark in the class…"
"Wait, you're Riku's sister, Naomi, aren't you? Why did you go to help classes if you are passing chemistry? Before you moved schools and all that…"
"Because my foster mother told her teacher friend that she thought that I could help boost your grades if we were science partners – I had the knowledge that maybe I could pass it on."
"That's a weird plan… But I know exactly who you are now… At our school, you were on the cheer squad, you took part in swimming galas and stuff like that." Takuya smiled at Naomi, even if it was more that he was pleased that he knew all the things about her that she knew.
"Yeah- that's all the stuff Mrs Miyamoni signed me up for, and it continued at my new school too. I know I love swimming though, especially the synchro and aquabatics."
"Wow." Takuya found his hand moving closer to Naomi's, but she moved hers away, standing up slowly.
"When I left the school, you were in a relationship with that girl in the year above us- Kimiko or something? The one that did that photo-shoot on the front page wearing a denim jacket and a tiny tartan skirt?" Naomi asked, looking back over her shoulder into the dark fields.
"Well, I was… But we went our separate ways a while ago."
"Oh, sorry about that then," Naomi murmured.
"Anyway, there are plenty of other fish in the sea."
"Yeah, pretty girls like Zoe Orimoto- you two would be perfect together." She looked away shyly.
"Erm, I guess, but I couldn't do that to J.P." Takuya slumped down on the bench, stuffing his hands in his pocket.
"Takuya, you shouldn't tell people's secrets!" exclaimed Naomi.
"I never actually said that J.P like Zoe- I implied it because he was never good at hiding it…"
"But you meant it and you said it just then."
"Seeing as we're criticising everyone else. For someone who was on the cheerleading squad and swimming pro, why aren't you dating the quarterback or something?"
"Oh, erm, only- because…"
"Come on Naomi…" Takuya urged jokingly, forcing Naomi to go bright red.
"Because I've never found the right guy. I'm just not sure. I should go and catch up with Zoe and Koichi," Naomi replied completely flustered.
"What is it with some girls?" sighed Takuya, going after Naomi.
Little did Naomi know that her younger brother was a lot more further ahead of them, but still in the area.
"You okay, Riku?" Koji called out over his shoulder, knowing that the younger boy was falling further and further behind.
"I'm okay," yawned Riku. "Tell me about the legendary warriors." He carried on walking through the tall grass.
"Well, there are ten legendary warriors who I know to have given their spirits to ten children. Each spirit represent an element in a way- then there are the human spirit, and the beast spirit."
"And which one have you got?" Riku stifled another yawn, hoping that Koji wouldn't notice.
"Listen Riku, do you want me to give you a piggy back? I don't think it's safe to stop here in the middle of the dark fields…" Koji stopped walking and the little boy walked straight into him as he was in the process of rubbing his eyes.
"No thank you Koji, I'm okay…" Riku replied, even though Koji had already crouched down in front of him.
"Come on, we need to keep going and it will be quicker if I carry you," Koji explained, allowing Riku to slump down onto him.
With Riku being so small and light, Koji was still able to keep up his usual quick and fast pace. Koji just kept on walking until he noticed an unusual small mud hut. It was barely noticeable if it weren't for the steps he could make out. They led to a small thatched door. Holding tightly onto the younger boy, Koji knocked on the door three times.
Slowly, the thatched door opened a little and a little white Digimon peeped through the gap. "Oh! Oh my. Everyone it's Koji. Koji, you are finally back." It was Bokomon – Koji recognised the voice.
"Koji!" squealed Neemon, throwing the door open as he popped up beside Bokomon.
"Yes, and I've brought company," Koji replied, tilting his head to one side so that Bokomon and Neemon could see the sleeping boy.
"Come on inside, he must be exhausted- he certainly looks it."
Bokomon led Koji inside to a large entrance hall where many hammocks were strung up, connected to a large wood trunk that stood in the centre of the structure. The two Digimon opened up a large hatch which went further into the ground. "First, you have some old friends to visit."
"Bokomon-" Neemon squeaked. "Angewomon, Antylamon and MagnaAngemon aren't old you know!" he exclaimed.
"Not age-wise, you fool!"
Bokomon, Neemon and Koji climbed down the ladder into the large temple room where the ten orbs stood on their stone stands.
"Greetings Koji, welcome back to the Digital World." Angewomon smiled at the boy.
"I feel the light of your body, Koji. It is good to see you," MagnaAngemon added.
Koji couldn't help but smile, because it made everything seem more real. "It's good to see you all."
"The boy…" Antylamon said cheerfully, with a hand raised over the sleeping child's head. "He is the child of earth, water, wood, or steel – I can feel it in him. He's so small and brave to have come here…"
"His name is Riku, Riku Hitoshi," Koji told them, smiling over his shoulder at the sleeping boy.
Thoughts from AspiringWriterGirl = So the children are finally in the digital world, yeah I know this chapter is a little short but I've been a little rushed lately :S
