Chapter 4:
I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay a while
And she will be loved
~She will be loved by Maroon5
A million emotions ran through my body at once by the news.
This she-wolf's life became more and more interesting by the minute.
"Despite the pack's hatred towards me, they're allowing me to stay. Mostly because the pup is 'my responsibility'. And even then, they don't let me see her much." Precious said, as she spoke, her voice nearly broke more.
I couldn't help the pain in my chest. If she felt sorry for me, I certainly felt for her.
I shook it off.
"Well then." I started in a normal tone, standing up, "I guess we better do some hunting."
The white wolf stuttered as I casually exited the den.
"W-wait. Despair. You don't h-have to..."
"I'm hungry anyway. I'll help you catch some prey, and you just leave me some of it in return. Easy." I continued as she finally caught up to me.
"Y-yeah. But... I don't know how to hunt." She said.
My walk faltered slightly, before picking up again, and before I could question her about it, "I'll teach you."
"Okay..." She said, unsure.
After a few miles of wandering, we came across a small herd of deer.
"Get down." I whispered to her, crouching down to hide under the grass.
She followed my lead.
"First. You want to go for the weakest, and wait for it to wander away from the herd." I whispered.
"Okay..." Precious said.
I had picked it out already while I explained to her.
One young doe, who looked like she'd been through some things. Possibly other attacks she'd survived.
"Ready? Wait for it...-NOW!" We both ran out of our hiding spot, charging at the herd.
I quickly moved to make sure their target didn't try to escape with the herd.
Precious was a few inches behind me.
"I'll go for the hind legs, you run ahead and try to grab onto its neck." I instructed.
"Okay, but-"
I turned out her reply, grabbing hold of the deer's hind leg.
I waited for the she-wolf to catch up, but she never did.
I tried to look behind me, she was running at an incredibly slow speed. As if hesitating.
Suddenly, my distraction gave the deer an advantage to kick me off.
I yelped as I went to the ground, slightly light-headed by the kick.
Growling annoyed, I faced the other wolf, "What were you waiting for? We had it."
"I'm sorry... I..."
"Forget it. I'll do it myself." I said before turning to catch up the the still fleeing deer.
I went for the deer's leg again, this time managing to make it loose its footing, stumbling to the ground.
I quickly moved to dig my canines into its throat.
Precious had caught up by the time the deer took its last breath.
I released it, sitting back to catch my breath, "There. Go ahead and eat first."
"I'm sorry." She apologized again, feeling truly guilty for her lack of help.
"Does your pack teach you nothing? How to hunt? How to even fight?" I asked.
To my surprise, she shook her head.
"They don't want to train me because they think that I'll 'step out of line' as they say it." She answered.
I stared at her, mouth agape.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to me.
A curious test.
I lunged at her, taking her by surprise as I brought her to the ground.
"W-what?" She was confused.
"Now. How do you defend yourself? How would you defend Misty if she-"
"Please don't hurt her!" Precious suddenly cries out.
This caught me off guard, my body almost immediately relaxing as I stared at her, bewildered.
... She really didn't know how to fight.
I carefully moved off of her, making some distance before sitting again.
"I'm sorry..." I said as she shakily got back up.
"It's ok. I'm used to it." She said, looking anywhere except me.
I tried not to let out a growl at the reply. Every time she spoke of the pack, it made my fur stand on end.
"I'm going to just go. Thanks for the food." Precious broke me off, before grabbing a considerate amount of their catch before taking off to the direct of her, so called, pack.
"Precious, wait!" I called after her.
She slowed down just a little, as if she were going to stop, but then picked up her speed again, disappearing into the trees.
I glared down at the grass. I'd probably never see her again after this.
I glanced back at the leftover deer carcass that awaited me.
"What're you looking at?" I glared at its glossed over eyes.
Suddenly, I wasn't hungry anymore.
