Hello again my loyal readers, Ultimatehero has finally returned. Due to some events beyond my control, I haven't been able to update as much recently. To those of you who have waited patiently on my return, I thank you and now give you your reward. And now, let us begin with the long awaited continuation of Wayside: Kicking it in Kanto.
Previously, Todd, Maurecia, Dana, Myron and Jenny went their separate ways as they began their journey in the Kanto region. While the others chose to use Abra's teleportation powers, Todd chose to take the long way around and started from pallet town as did many legendary trainers before him. On the first few hours on his way to Viridian city to register for the Pokémon League tournament, he decided to read up on the basics on catching Pokémon. But as he was doing this, his food which he was saving as rations we're being stolen and eaten by a group of thieving pidgeys. Before they got away, Todd's squirtle managed to shoot down one of the pidgeys and reclaim a sandwhich, but he also caught his first Pokémon on his journey.
However, this was a bit of a hallow victory as Todd now had nothing but a light snack. And he wasn't sure it was gonna last him all the way to Viridian. But, just as he was thinking of his current situation, he had heard the sounds of a battle going on nearby. He and squirtle raced past the trees and bushes to find two other trainers.
Edd, a kid who had temporarily separated from his group in search of Pokémon and also a beginning trainer.
And Michael. An experienced Pokémon trainer from the Orre region where wild Pokémon are apparently scarce. After hearing of his current dilemma with the pidgeys, Michael offered him and Edd to sit down to lunch with him. After their gullets were full, Michael had challenged Todd to a battle to practice for tougher fights ahead. Although he put up a good fight, he was no match for the experienced Umbreon and it's trainer. Before parting ways, Michael hinted that Todd's beginner goes through a transformation called 'Evolution' which will make it considerably stronger. After waving goodbye to Edd or Double D as his friends call him, Todd continues his walk to Viridian city. Now, It's time to turn the channel to two of his friends at the starting point of their adventure, The journey continues with….
Chapter 4:Throwdown in HopHopHop Town!
We join Myron and Dana as they are resting at a burger stand in the city. The two have already seen the city sights and Dana wanted to see more. However, Myron was just fine gorging himself on burgers and lazing about.
"Are you done yet, Myron. Dana asked. We still have a lot to do!"
"Man, what's your hurry? We've already seen half the city in one day. Myron complained.
"Myron, may I remind you that this is not a vacation. In fact, we should be training our Pokémon right now before the others get ahead of us. And judging the way Myron Jr. has been acting in it's last couple of battles, I'd say you need the training.
"Oh please. Myron replied taking a sip from his soda. So we've had a couple of bad runs. I'll' take care of it.
"I wouldn't be so confident if I were you Myron. What if one of the others comes to challenge you to a battle? You'll get rolled over. Said Dana.
"Come on, Dana. Now you're just being paranoid. Who's going to challenge us out here?" Asked Myron.
"Well, I'd reckon I would." Said a familiar voice. Myron and Dana turn to see Jenny climbing off her motor bike. Her Zigzagoon was in the side car wearing a white scarf with a blue helmet and goggles.
"Jenny? What are you doing here?" Asked Dana. I thought you had chosen to go to cerulean city with Maurecia.
"Yeah, I thought so too. I think that little psychic critters powers are a bit rusty," jenny replied. I don't even know where sister mo' got sent to.
"Then, we should try to go look for her!" Said Dana rising from her seat.
"Aw, I wouldn't worry about her. Said Jenny. I'm sure she'll be able to take care of herself just fine. Hoefully, I'll meet up with her on the way to cerulean. So, what are you guys doing here anyway?"
"After checking out the city, we were going to get some training in. But Myron here would rather take in the sights more." Said Dana.
"Aw, come on Dana! How often are we going to have a chance to travel in japan?" Myron whined. Dana was about to respond, but Jenny had cut her off.
"Ya know, Myron's got a point there. She began. Sure, we can all finish the assignment at our own pace. But ya gotta learn to stop and smell the roses once and a while."
"See? Jenny agrees with me.' Said Myron as he had leaned back in his chair.
"Though, Dana's got a point too." She continued which had made Myron shoot up from his chair.
"Wait, what?" He asked.
"If you don't want to fall behind the rest of the herd, you gotta make sure you can at least keep up. So, how 'bout a little rumble?" She asked as she had grew a smirk on her face.
"Wait, you mean a Pokémon battle?" Myron asked with an eyebrow raised.
"Sure. On the way here, I fought a couple of kiddies who're starting out as well. She answered. So, you up for it? Or would you rather sit there while me and Dana go at it?"
"No way! I'm no coward. Come on Bulbasuar!" Myron said as he had got up from his chair. But Bulbasuar had simply yawned before it had got itself up.
..Aaah, what time is it?" He asked as he had got up.
About two minutes later, the three had arrived at a clear alleyway with Jenny standing at the other end.
"Since y'all have been hangin around here for some time, I'm gong to assume that you haven't gotten any other Pokémon with ya besides the professor's. So let's make this a one on one. Sound good with ya?" Jenny asked.
"No arguments here! Let's go Myron Jr.!" Myron shouted. But Myron jr had just let out a yawn before unenthusiastically walking several inches in front of his trainer.
"Your Bulbasuar's not lookin' very spry today. Said Jenny. Oh well. Alright Ziggy, Let 'em ride! He shouted as her Pokémon had rushed in front of it's trainer looking ready to fight. '
"Alright, come at me bro!" Zigzagoon said confidently which had translated as zig zig!
"Whatever." Myron jr. responded.
"My move first. Myron jr, let start this off with tackle attack!" Myron commanded.
"Despite it's current attitude, Myron jr, had charged at zigzagoon.
"Ziggy, dodge that and counter with headbutt!" Jenny commanded. Just as Myron jr, was about to hit ziggy, it had moved to the side dodging its charge and rammed it's head into its side sending it flying for about three seconds before iot landed.
Okay, now….you've got my attention." Said a slightly peaved Myron jr.
"Myron jr, use growl!" Myron commanded. As commanded, Bulbasuar had let out a loud 'BULBA! Which had turned into a sonic wave effectively lowering ziggy's attack..
"Ziggy! Don't let that phase ya! Hurry up and strike with tackle attack! Shouted Jenny. Ziggy had then broke through Myron jr's growl and had begun charging for a tackle attack.
"Myron jr, stop it with tackle attack!" Myron shouted. Myron jr. had intercepted ziggy's attack ith relative ease. After being weakened by growl, ziggy didn't have the strength to win and eventually got pushed back.
"Ha! Alright! Now, let's end it with one more tackle attack!" Myron shouted hoping to end the fight fast. But judging by the look on Jenny's face, it seems like it was just what she wanted.
'Ha, gotcha now! Ziggy, use sand attack!" Jenny shouted. At her command, Ziggy had tossed some of the dirt in the ground into Myron jr's face effectively blinding it.
GAAAH! MY EYES! Myron jr. roared in pain.
'Hey! That's cheating!" Myron complained.
"Don't think so myron. That there was sand-attack. And it's a real move that zigzagoon can learn. Look it up on your pokedex. But before ya do that, look at this. Ziggy, take out his Bulbasuar with full power headbutt! Jenny shouted. Ziggy had charged at the blind Bulbasuar with it being unable to counter its attack.
"Oh no! Myron jr, watch out!" Myron shouted trying to warn him. But it was useless as it was still trying to get the sand out of its eyes. So Ziggy's attack had struck Myron jr. head on and sent him back to Myron's side of the field. The next glimpse they got of his face had his eyes replaced with black swirls.
'Myron jr. is unable to battle. Ziggy is victorious. Which means the winner of this battle is Jenny." Dana announced as she had extended her right hand to Jenny's side.
"Now that's the way to do it! That's our third win today!" Jenny shouted.
"Aw man! Not again! Said a disappointed Myron. Myron jr., return." He said returning his Pokémon for some rest.
"Sorry we had to beat ya. Hasn't your bulbasaur learned any new attacks?" Asked Jenny.
"Well yeah. Some move called vine whip." Myron replied.
"Then why didn't you use that during the battle? Could've helped a bit." Said Jenny.
"Have you seen that move's power? It's only 30! Myron complained. That's weaker than Tackle. Why would I use a move like that when I have a stronger one to use?"
"Myron, each move has it's use. If you stick to using only one move all the time, neither you or your bulbasaur's going to get anywhere. Isn't that how you lost to Todd?" Asked Dana.
"What do you mean? Myron replied. Partway through, it hid in it's shell."
"And raised its defense so it could withstand Myron jr.'s tackle. Interjected Jenny. Look, me and ziggy are heading out to search for sister mo'. I hope you train up a bit the next time we see ya." With that, Jenny had left leaving Myron to mull over the result of his latest battle.
"I don't get it. Tackle and growl always worked on those other trainers." Said Myron.
"Come on. Let's go to the Pokémon center and get Myron jr. fixed up." Said Dana. After the two rested at the Pokémon center, Myron agreed to try to act nicer to his bulbasaur as well as begin training. They had arrived at the same clearing where his battle with Jenny took place. Both of them had released their Pokémon almost at the same time.
"Alright Myron jr, ready for some training?" Asked Myron. But his bulbasaur only replied with a feh.
"Okay Magnimite, let's start this slow with a tackle attack!" Dana commanded. Magnimite had charged towards the grass type holding nothing back.
(Come on. Don't be an idiot. Say vine whip and I can stop that hunk of junk in it's tracks!) Thought Myron jr.
"Myron Jr, intercept with your own tackle attack! Myron commanded which made his bubasaur cringe. Although he knew what was about to happen, he had complied and had charged at Dana's magnimite. The end result was a chunk of damage and a splitting headache for Myron jr.
"Remember Myron, steel type Pokémon aren't very effected by normal type moves like tackles." Said Dana.
"Alright then, I guess now's a good time to try that move. Myron jr, use vine whip!" Commanded Myron.
(About time.) Said Myron jr. as he had extended to long vines from under the bulb on its back and whacked the steel type knocking it back a few paces.
"Woah, it actually used vines from it's back?! Asked an easily impressed Myron.
(What did you think I would use?) Said Myron jr. in its poke speak.
"Don't get distracted Myron! Magnimite, use sonicboom!" Commanded Dana. Magnimite had fired waves of energy impacting Myron jr sending it back to Myron's side of the field.
"Myromn jr, are you okay?" Asked Myron.
(Gee, didn't know you cared.) Myron jr. replied.
Don't give them any slack magnimite! Now use tackle attack! Dana commanded as her steel type Pokémon charged at Myron jr once again.
"Myron jr, dodge that and hit it with vine whip!" Shouted Myron. As soon as he dodged the steel type's assault, Myron jr, had unleashed a flurry of vine whips gradually wearing down magnimite's strength. Eventually, it had none left and was knocked out.
"Alright! Nice job Myron jr." Cheered Myron.
"You see Myron? All moves have their strengths and weaknesses. In fact, you probably could have beaten Jenny If you decided to use vine whip." Explained Dana.
"Wait, what? Are you serious?" Myron asked in disbelief.
"While I was reading a guide I found in the Pokémon center, I learned about STAB moves." Dana replied.
"Stab? But Myron jr. didn't stab your magnimite. He whacked it with his vines." Myron replied.
"No Myron. STAB as in S.T.A.B. It stands for same type attack bonus." Dana began. You see, vine whip is a grass type move. If used by a grass type Pokémon, such as your bulbasaur, it gains a STAB bonus. Had it not been for magnimite's resistance against grass type attacks, it would have went down a whole lot faster. Zigzagoon doesn't resist grass type attacks so who knows how much damage it would have caused?"
"Well then, we'll have a surprise for Jenny next time we meet. And next time, there's no way I'm gonna lose!" Said Myron clenching his fist.
"Come on. We'll spend a little more time here, and then it's off to find our first gym battle!" Said Dana.
As Myron learns more about the elements of a Pokémon battle, he and Dana spent a little more time around hophop town until they set out to find their first gym challenge. Will the duo be able to prepare for whatever the gym leaders of kanto has to throw at them?
Alright everyone. It's time for Pokémon levels! (will fill in later)
Next time on kicking it in kanto, we meet up ith the blader girl as she arrives in cerulean city at an attempt for her first badge. However, she'll find that someone has beaten her to the punch.
