-Let there be midnight
A Mission With Another
"Yo, Gramps!" The small old man looked up, one eye opened as he brought his mug of beer away from his lips, looking at the pink haired child that ran in front of his three friends, a blue cat flying beside him. Standing behind the counter that he sat on, was a white haired barmaid who paused in wiping down a counter with a damp rag.
"Natsu-chan!" Mira chirped happily as she caught sight of her favorite pink haired friend—well he was her only pink haired friend since pink hair isn't exactly something that was common. She set the damp rag down and grabbed a clean mug from behind the counter, filling it with chocolate milk and setting it on the counter before she grabbed her damp rag and continued to clean the rest of the counter, looking up at her returning friends with wide blue eyes. Natsu hopped onto the barstool before the chocolate milk and grabbed the mug with two hands, drowning it as fast as he could.
"How was your mission?" Mira asked, looking up at the other three that walked over to where she and the master were, instead of run like someone else she knew. Gray shrugged in reply, sitting in a barstool next to Natsu.
"Alright, I guess. Natsu was the only one who got any action from the mission, but it went pretty good." Gramps raised an eyebrow at this, setting his beer mug down.
"Is that so?" he asked with mild interest. Natsu bobbed his head up and down, setting his chocolate milk down as he looked at Gramps, a chocolate milk stash above his lip.
"Yup!" he replied, wiping off his milk stash. The corners of the master's lips curled as if to smile at the responds.
"So, I take it you defeated the Kurai Homura?" Again, Natsu nodded vigorously. Gramps smiled a little at this, closing his eyes as he drunk from his beer mug. "That's good. And you came back just in time too. I wanted you five to go on a mission with Levy and Wendy to the Yurriki Mountains." Lucy slumped against the counter, a look of exhaustion crossing her features.
"Another mission? Just when we got back from one? You're going to overwork us Master!" Lucy groaned, burying her head in her elbows. Gray looked at the master curiously.
"Levy and Wendy? But don't they work with their own groups?" he asked curiously. He knew that Levy worked with Jet and Droy all the time (the two of them always fawning over Levy like hormonal high-school girls) and Wendy worked with Lisanna, Elfman, and her white cat Carla. As far as Gray knew, someone was never torn out of groups to work with another.
Gramps nodded, his hands folded in his lap with his beer next to him. "Yes, Levy and Wendy. I sent Lisanna, Elfman, Jet and Droy on another mission because I wanted Levy and Wendy to go on a mission with you five." Erza raised a scarlet eyebrow, arms crossed over her armor. Gramps read the unvoiced question the teen had given him, so he went on. "I thought it would be educational if they come out of their own groups so they won't get used to the same fighting style over and over again. It does them good to change." Lucy looked at the short old man, turning her head away from her elbows to do so.
"Then why don't you split us up?" she asked, her voice muffled from her arm.
"Because you five tend to like to do solos sometimes, or work with just one other person." he replied easily.
"What's the mission about?" Erza asked, changing the subject.
"There has been some weird activity going on at Yurriki Mountain. There's a small village at just the base of it that claims three people had gone missing in just the time span of two days. Not only that, someone says they saw a large cat-like figure, but it wasn't a cat. They explained it to be more of a cat and snake like origin."
"Surizaringuneko?" Natsu asked curious as Mira took away the empty mug in front of him once she finished cleaning the counter and started to wipe it cleaned as she listened to the conversation, intrigued. Master shrugged.
"It just might be. But it also might be an Aidentitichenja." Gramps commented seriously.
"Aidentitichenja?" Lucy asked curiously, lifting her head from her arms to look at the master in confusion.
"It's a demon that can disguise itself as any other demon it wishes for as long as it wants. A lot of Demon Hunters had died from Aidentitichenja's because they thought them to be something different and were overwhelmed by their power when they turned into powerful demons they could not handle." Erza explain to Lucy, who nodded her head, a little mystified and scared at the description given to her.
"I heard that Laxus one time came across one and killed it in not even twenty minutes of fighting it!" Natsu piped up, remembering a rumor he heard two years before. Gramps looked grim at the subject.
"Yes, but it also might not be an Aidentitichenja. They've also said they saw a lizard-like bull with bird wings, Tokageburu No Tsubasa. It could be two demons or just one demon disguising itself as the other two." he explained, a his face changing to a goofy serious one as he pointed right at Natsu with his staff that was right next to him. "AND YOU BETTER NOT GO AFTER IT ALONE AND TRY TO DEFEAT IT, BRAT!" Natsu yelped at getting yelled at, a shiver running up and down his spin as he stared wide eyed. Master sat back down, setting the staff to the side once more as he looked on with a calmer look. "Mira-chaaan! I'll like another beer~!" he told the white barmaid, hearts in his eyes.
Night soon fell across the sky, the moon taking the suns place and the stars littered the sky as if trying to peer down at the sleeping people and dark houses, curious at the silence that was like a spell over the lands.
Somewhere deep in the country a train rattled endlessly on the tracks, the only source of light leading it was a large headlight in the front, shinning on the tracks.
"Are we there yet…?" Natsu groaned, clutching his stomach as if in deep pain, leaning forward with a green face. Beside him Happy, Lucy, Erza, Wendy, and Carla slept peacefully. The only ones in the cabin that were still awake was him, Gray, and Levy. The blue haired girl hadn't paid attention to the pink haired child as she was scribbling fiercely in a book with one hand as the other flipped pages of a book. Her eyes were screwed up with concentration behind red framed reading glasses that sat at the tip of her nose, her blue hair falling in strands into her face from the messy bun she had pinned it up in to work.
Beside her, Gray looked at Natsu from the corner of his eye. His head rested in the palm of his hand, his elbow sitting on the edge of windowsill so he could look out into the darkness of passing trees, lakes, and empty lands. He sighed, stretching and yawning as he looked at Natsu with half lidded eyes.
"We should be there in five hours or so. Give or take a few." he replied nonchalantly as he looked down at the blue haired girl beside him and at what she was writing. "You're searching up demons?" he asked with raised eyebrows. Levy didn't look up at him as she continued with what she was doing.
"Not just any demon. Since the sightings were about a Surizaringuneko, Aidentitichenja, and Tokageburu No Tsubasa I've decided to look up what they were. I want to know their habits, powers, weakness, things like that." she replied, pushing up her red framed reading up her nose so they didn't fall off when they had begun to inch forward again. Gray ignored the soft thump of Natsu falling onto Lucy's lap in front of him, finally passing out from his motion sickness. Lucy stirred a little in her sleep, but didn't wake.
"Don't want to go into battle uninformed, huh?" he asked, leaning back into his cushioned seat, hands behind his head. Levy nodded, flipping through a couple of more pages speedily, stopping in her writing to do so.
"You can never know what could go wrong unless your informed." she sighed tiredly, leaning back as she took a rest from her work.
"Eh, but even though you have all the information you need, it's nothing like actually fighting them." Gray pointed out with a shrug. Levy closed her thick book and set it down on the floor with her stack of others, doing the same with her notebook. She took off her glasses and stuffed them into a bag, looking at Gray with dark brown eyes.
"It's better than not knowing anything about your enemy." she commented casually. She looked passed Gray and out the window, looking at the scenery with unfocused eyes. "Gray, can I tell you something?" she asked a little timid. Gray let his hands fall down from behind his head.
"Depends." he replied, Levy looking into his midnight blue eyes with nervousness, only to look away.
"I-I've decided to research something new now… and well, it's about Natsu…" she muttered, her knees shifting against each other as if she was telling the older boy her deepest of secrets. This caught Gray's attention as he looked down at her, his eyebrow raised.
"Natsu? You don't mean—"
"Yes. I want to see if I can help him in any way I can. But it's hard to. There has never been a recording in history where a human had paused in their growth and stayed the same age for the rest their life. It must be horrible for Natsu to be stuck looking like a kid even though he's seventeen. People look down at him and think he is just another kid when he's not. And on top of that he can't even remember his life before he became a Demon Hunter. I just want to help him but it's impossible with no information on his situation." Levy sighed in defeat, eyes closing as her heart dropped into her stomach. She'd known the pinkette since she was a child and would do anything to help him even if it meant searching till the ends of the earth to find something that could return him to his rightful age.
Gray put a hand on her shoulder, startling Levy as she looked up at him with large dark brown eyes. "Even if you can't find a cure for Natsu's problem, I think it's enough knowing that you tried your best to is enough for him." he smiled as he leaned back and closed his eyes, ready for sleep. Levy looked down at her hands that fiddled in her lap, her eyes still troubled.
Gray's words didn't sooth her at all. She still felt useless, helpless even. She didn't want Natsu to be okay with the way he was, she wanted him to finally be seventeen like he was supposed to be. And if she knew one thing is that she would not stop in trying to find a cure for the boy with motion sickness. She would not stop till she had found one to turn him to a seventeen-year-old.
