Fireteam: Werewolf
There was little room between all of them. It was very crowded, as if they had just been crammed into a sardine can.
"What's that smell?" I asked, waving my hand in front of my nose.
"That's probably Wolf, now you know how he got his nickname." Chuckled Morgan.
"Shhhhh...hear that?" Hushed Wolf.
"I don't hear anything.." West stated.
"That's the sound of all the women that are chasing after our beloved squad leader." Hissed Wolf.
Wellborn chuckled as I gave Morgan a thumbs up, "Don't worry Sarge, I don't have anyone either!"
The rest of the tunnel exploration was silent, eerily silent. It was almost as if we couldn't hear our own footsteps. I took this time to carefully inspect my M39. It was a simple weapon. It was made that way. There wasn't time for any thing else. We were once one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. And in less than 24 hours, it has all been whisked away from us. I went to school, i heard the stories. I could have become anything I wanted. I could've been an engineer, gone to Europe, and never thought about anything else. But i decided when i turned 10 to join what was left of our Army. Our once powerful, magnificent army. Now we were all that was left. We didn't call ourselves an army. There was no Marines or a Navy or even an Air Force. There was just us. Protectors. Of course, there was still that whole 'you can't join until your 18'. But here i was, 19 and loving it. I was fighting for something so much greater than me. I just wish I had been paired with my brother. Lenny was almost 27, he knew what life was like before all this. When I was younger I spent many nights laying awake listening to him tell me stories about when it was okay to go outside. It was okay to act like you didn't have a care in the world. How you could take your time growing up. But in this world, the moment you were born you had to grow up. I was surprised when my nose suddenly came into contact with the feeling of mesh. I woke up from my day dream.
"There's a latter." I thought out loud.
"No shit Sherlock..." cussed Wellborn.
"I've never read those books.." I confessed
"Good, they have a tendency to bore you to death." Chirped Morgan as he looked up at the ladder. Wolf grabbed a rung. "What exactly are you doing?" Questioned Morgan as he grabbed the same bar.
"Oh come on Sarge, if there is any scaries outside I will scream loudly for you, okay?" Chuckled Wolf.
"Its not you I'm worried about, it's them." Morgan quiped, pointing up.
"Don't worry, i'll play nice." Wolf said as he winked. He started climbing. We heard a few clings, then nothing. We waited. We figured it was smarter to send one guy out instead of a whole squad. Wolf was gonna sit out there and get a good lay of the land, and find the way home.
We sat for about 3 hours. Bored. Out of our minds. We just looked at each other. Finally I noticed that Wellborn was reading a book. I shot him a glance.
"Watcha Reading?"
"A book numbnuts."
"Obviously, what book though?"
"An interesting book, you wouldn't understand a good book if it hit you in the face." Wellborn snapped back. What he didn't realize is that Morgan had stealthily made it behind him, and was silently laughing.
"FIFTY SHADES OF GREY...!" He shouted "Wow, you really are lonely!"
"Shuddup. My wife gave it to me before I left New York. It reminds me of here!"
"What? The book or the chains, because you my friend, are whipped as it is!"
We all continued to laugh for a while. Then we heard a something fall down the ladder. Wolf barked. It was his universal symbol for 'Everything is cool"
We climbed up the ladder, Unsure of what awaited us at the top.
