Amaris shot up screaming, beads of sweat rolling down her face and neck. The dream seemed so real to her, and it was troubling. Not that she thought Sarah was capable of such evil, but to see Caleb die as he did right in front of her eyes was unsettling. The brunette curled herself into her blankets seeking comfort in the only thing she could. Sleep did not come easily for her after the dream. She tossed and turned through the night catching moments of sleep here and there, and then her alarm was going off.
Amaris parked beside Tyler's Hummer where she saw Pogue, Reid, Tyler, and Kate standing beside it all talking and laughing with one another. It was nice to see her friends and brother as happy as they were, especially after the events that took place only a few months before her arrival. The dream was still haunting her thoughts, she could not even manage to make her way out of her car.
'It seemed so real yet just a part of my imagination. I can't tell the guys. They'd get too paranoid, after all the darklings Chase sent them.' Amaris thought to herself. She kept her eyes closed as the possibilities fled her mind as to why she had this nightmare. There was a loud, sudden knock on her window causing Amaris to jump out of her skin.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, Simms?" she yelled just after she opened the door of her car. Tyler could not help but laugh at his friend's scare, but once he calmed down and really looked at her, he could see the distress in her troubled, hazel eyes.
"Hey, what's wrong, Amy. I can see something is wrong, and don't you dare lie to me." Amaris ran a hand through her hair looking to the group to make sure none of them were in ear sight. Besides Caleb and Kate, Tyler was the only one to stay in touch with her, and he knew more about her time in New Orleans than anyone else did. She could tell him anything, and knew it would stay between them. Her secrets never even made it to Reid.
"If you meet me at my dorm I'll tell, but you can't let the others know. Pogue would suffocate me if he knew what was going on, and I'm not sure y'all are healed after the Chase problem."
Tyler nodded receiving a hug from Amaris before she walking towards the academy, but before she could make it out of the parking lot Sarah fell into line with her. The blond was not exactly a person she wanted to face today. Her face brought up the memory of sheer pleasure that was plastered on it in the nightmare. The laughing over Caleb's dead body ringing loudly in her ears.
"Are you alright, Amaris?" the brunette looked over to the slightly taller girl, real concern in her bright, blue eyes.
"Yeah I'm fine. Thanks for asking, Sarah," Amaris gave a smile, but seeing her was just troubling her, "If you wouldn't mind, I'd really like to walk alone today."
"Oh. Ok that's fine. I mean I thought we got over our problems, but I get it you still don't like me, so I'll keep my distance," Sarah said walking a bit faster.
"Sarah, wait, that's not what is going on. I just had a really bad night, and I'm just trying to get myself together before I have to face the day," her classmate stopped to turn to the brunette, and she gave a small smile.
"I'm sorry about that then. I'll leave you to your walk," with that Sarah walked away again from Amaris, who walked away from the parking lot to the edge of the woods.
There was something calling her, a voice whispering for her to come closer. She couldn't resist the temptation, it was as if the proverbial strings were controlling every inch of her body, leading the young witch closer to the woods surrounding Spenser. Amaris could not wrap her head around why she was going there. Especially since it was only her second day of class. Pogue and the others would certainly notice her absence, but all that aside the girl kept walking deeper into the unknown. The voice was getting louder with every step she took, and she looked in every direction around her expecting someone to eventually show their face.
"Who are you, and what do you want from me?" She whispered to the voice needing a clue as to who was her puppeteer.
"You will know soon enough dear Amaris, but for now let's just keep this between us." The male voice spoke as if it were fading away. She reached the old colonial cottage in the woods eying it cautiously as she approached it. There she saw an anonymous figure in a black robe facing her. The figure was tall, with a male's body build, but his face was obscured even in the light of day.
"I'm going to take a wild guess that you're the one that won't stay out of my head? News flash. I don't want you there so stay out of it," she informed the stranger.
"Quite the feisty one, and brave no doubt," he walked closer to the brunette, who stood her ground waiting for an attack at any moment, "No wonder Janice chose you as the new wielder. I can feel your power from here witch."
"Wielder?" she questioned quietly as she ran through her thoughts trying to figure out what the man meant. All she had was her powers, and Janice never gave her anything besides the necklace. It could not have been of that much importance if the woman just gave it to some girl she only knew for a short while before disappearing one day, "I think you have me confused with someone else because I do not wield anything."
"Wrong you are, Amaris Parry. See, that amulet you hold dangling from your neck is mine, and I want it back. You are not its rightful keeper," walking even closer to Amaris, she wrapped her fingers safely around the pendent on instinct. Janice Callaway had given it to her as a gift, and even though she knew the woman for only a year, it was still precious to her. Janice taught her many valuable lessons, and that was something Amaris would honor.
"Why? It's a mere pendent that was given to me as a gift it holds nothing of your concern."
"Wrong again young one. It seems as though Ms. Callaway has failed to tell you the use of the artifact. Why don't I just show you," The man finally closed the last bit of space between them. He placed his hands onto both sides of Amaris' head, and invaded her mind as he slipped into the deepest parts of her brain embedding Janice's memories upon her own.
Janice ran through the woods nowhere to go but to jump as her only escape from the herd of horse riders trying to capture her. Looking back behind her, hair swaying in the wind, the riders were gaining on her. She held a golden pentagram with an ocean blue gem in the middle of the star. It's powers were ungodly, and if it fell into the hands of the man that started this hunt, well the world would be a retched place to be.
"Come here you wretched bitch," jumping from his horse a distance from Janice, but walked briskly towards her, "You will not escape from me this time. That power is mine to wield!" Janice looked around the man still behind her, and back to the ocean. She could his footsteps quicken into a run, but before she knew it she had jumped from the cliff straight to the salty rage of the sea's arms. As she hit the water the rocks cut her skin deeply stinging the wounds that covered her body.
One hundred centuries later she was on a wall looking upon the mortals that walked before her on Bourbon Street. There she spotted her the next wielder she saw in the premonition. Janice casually walked over to the girl by the name of Amaris.
The day she died, Janice was walking in the cemetery from the tombstone of "Maria Roberts," her sister. She turned around hearing a rustling coming from the leaves that had fallen during as fall arrived. As she continued forward the man in the black robe appeared in front of her taking Janice by the throat. He lifted her into the air choking the life out of the raven haired woman that stood between him and the one item he wanted, needed to posses.
"Now, Lephrum, you will tell me where the amulet is. If you refuse to do so, then I will hunt down the new wielder 'til my last breath, and you do not want to know what will become if them," he threatened as he tightened his grip around Janice's throat. She started thrashing, hoping to loosen the grip on her neck, but to no avail.
"I'd rather die than to let a fool like you have such power," Janice chocked out spitting on his face. A small smirk of satisfaction playing dangerously across her lips. All she wanted was to provoke him for only a little while longer just before he decided she was no longer needed.
"Pitiful honestly. I was expecting more of a fight from a species as ancient as yours, and from the one that's been running from me for centuries."
"My time is now done. It is now a new form of power to take over The Lephrum's duty to this world." He smirked sending a power surge from his hand to her throat making her cry out in pain as she burned within his grasp, a small light emitting from her body as it disintegrated. Her ashes flew away in the gust of wind, and the man walked away from the cemetery slipping back into the shadows that he was accustomed to being in after all these years
Amaris fell to the ground away, and instantly crawled away from the man. Her life was now in danger, and no one was here to save her now. All she could was hope there was a way to free herself of this man for a moment, just long enough to get away and back to Spenser. She needed her brother and her friends more than ever right now. His footsteps started getting closer to the witch, and the panic inside her began to swell up inside just as tears started to blur her vision.
"Now you see here, if you do not want to cooperate I will take your life just as I did hers," his voice was still soft when he talked to her, even as his foot stomped down on her ankle causing the girl to scream in agony, "Hand it over to me," He extended his hand out to her face waiting for the amulet to be placed onto his palm.
"If you think threatening me, or breaking my bones will make me succumb to a monster like you think again." she all but growled. Her eyes turned black, and in that moment of his distraction, she sent a force of energy towards the stranger. He fell hard to the ground, his head hitting a root from the closest tree. Amaris quickly scrambled to her feet, and ran as fast as she could away from the new threat.
"Hmm. I've never seen a power just like yours," wiping the trail of blood from his lip as he watched Amaris' figure become more distant, "It's quite impressive. Until next time, Witch," The man disengaged to the shadows that enveloped his form.
By the end of the day, Pogue was walking out of Spenser frantically not being able to find his sister. His first thoughts were that Chase had made his way back, and captured her. His mind was going a hundred miles an hour as he tried to process why his sister was not in any of her classes that day. Pogue had seen Amaris earlier this morning when Tyler was talking to her, and she had started walking to the academy, so why was she absent?
"Where the hell could she have gone?" The older Parry was starting to lose it as he kept scanning every direction.
"Man calm down we'll find her. Amy's old enough to take care of herself." Caleb stated putting his hand on his friend's back for reassurance.
"I was plenty old enough to take care of myself, too," Pogue knocked Caleb's hand of his shoulder, "when Chase came along, but Kate and I still almost died because we underestimated him!He sure as hell could hurt my little sister just as easily." Kate ran to boyfriend wrapping her arms around him knowing he needed all the comfort he could get.
"You freaking out is not going to help us get to her any faster, Pogue," her dark eyes meeting his light hazel ones, "You need to try calming down a moment."
"Do you think maybe she went into the woods?" Tyler asked seeing a footprint in the muddy parts of the woodlines, "You know how she thinks nature comforts her plus that looks to be about her shoe size." he continued as started deeply into the thick pattern of trees that stood across from them.
"Maybe. Let's go look. It won't hurt anything," Reid said taking the first step in between the trees.
"Damn," Caeb cursed under his breath with a hand grabbing at his dark hair, "I've got a thing with Sarah. Um... call when you find her." Caleb said before trying to walk away.
"So that's it, you're just going to walk away right now? Especially when she could be in trouble, and you're the only one that's ascended. The only shot we have to truly protecting her," Pogue pointed out in a leveled voice, but honestly his blood was boiling over. How dare this man who claims to be his sister's best friend bail on them for some stupid new girl who just recently stole his heart away, "You know that if it were you in her position she would make any guy wait until you were found. Now you don't even care about her well being. I thought you were better than that, Caleb." Pogue said walking away from his closest friend. Betrayal is what he was feeling right now. How could this be happening right now?
"I didn't plan for her to go missing did I? How was I supposed to know?"
"Just go find Sarah, Caleb, because if you come any closer I can't be held accountable for what I may do to you," he looked around one more time seeing everyone, but Kate had already made their way into the woods, "I'm out of here." Pogue left with Kate in tow. Within the woods everyone had split up, but not very far so they would still be in yelling distance, looking for their missing member. Finally Reid found her lying face down on the ground. Leaves had found their way in her hair, pallor a little lighter than normal, and her breathing seemed to be too slow for comfort. Sheer panic grew in Reid as he kept studying her.
"I've got her guys!" He yelled picking her up bridal style carrying the young girl to the others.
"Oh god. Ames? Ames," Pogue tried shaking her awake, but it was not working, so he took his sister from Reid trying find some comfort in the fact that they found her even in the state that she was in, "wake up girl you better be alright."
Tyler turned away from everyone as his eyes went black. He had to do something to help his friend, and if risking a little power was the trick, then so be it. He would do it over and over again for any of his brothers as well. Tyler could not stand the sight of deathly still form. It was almost to real for him to deal with. Amaris had just gotten back to them. She could not be taken away from them so quickly. Amaris jumped in Pogue's arms, and they all let out a stress relieved sigh or groan once her eyes were open. Looking at all the people around her, she could see that her vision was blurred, and her head was spinning making her dizzier than she could believe.
"Woah. Make the world stop spinning," were the first words from her mouth after she flopped her head back down onto her brother's arm.
"What the fuck happened out here, Amaris?" Pogue commanded of his sister looking her sternly in the eyes.
"I'll explain later, but can we please get out of here?" She asked trying to get onto her own feet.
He watched as the group gathered around the girl as she steadied herself. How easy it would be to kill them all of at this moment, but where would the fun be in that if he could not even enjoy the screams of agony escaping the girl's lips as he slowly drained her life from her? No he would wait for a more opportune time. He would let them have this small time of rejoice. But soon, there world would be crumbling before their very eyes. The man could not wait to wipe the smiles from all of their faces. They should not be enjoying this matter, but as he continued to watch them, he remembered of another he needed to pay a visit to, so he left the children of Ipswich in search of his prey.
