AUTHOR'S NOTE:
I'm very sorry for the delay, I tried to upload this earlier but I have been really busy since I have a lot of projects going right now at college, so I won't be able to upload as much as I wanted. Sorry again.
This chapter is Korrasami, as I hace said before I don't ship them at all but I love them being best friends, there's a little bit of that in this episode.
This chapter also serves as introductory for the mistery that is going on.
I hope you like it :)
Please review, I love being able to read everyone's opinion.
EPISODE 3:
Disclaimer: I don't own anything.
She was staring at the pale white ceiling of her new apartment. The place wasn't really fancy, but she was used to that kind of thing, it felt like home, somewhat. Next to the bed there was a picture of Ulva and her, taken at the headquarters a couple of days ago, for the sake of having some sort of proof of their relation. She looked around the house, and felt like she was intruding in the life of a happy family, a couple of sisters that loved each other very much. A pang of sadness invaded her heart. Amon was like a father to her, but she always had wanted to know about her parents, since she didn't remember a thing about them, they left her when she was just a baby. When she was young she had asked a couple of times about them, but he wouldn't say a thing.
She had to report to Amon her findings, but she knew that, at that moment, she wouldn't be able to give him a proper report, she was still registering all that had happened and what she felt today.
She relaxed on "her" bed, still looking at the ceiling and slowly closed her eyes. When the dark invaded her vision, Mako's face came to view, his golden eyes, black hair and handsome features.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
She snapped out and jumped of her bed, startled and guilty for permitting herself to think about him.
Calmer she picked up the phone.
"Korra? It's me, Hiroshi Sato." She could feel his annoyance through the phone.
"Hello, Mr. Sato." She replied as calmly as she could, even though she already had a snarky answer ready for him.
"Asami is already home, and I supposed you had your report ready, but Amon told me you hadn't reported yet." She was sure that Mr. Sato didn't trust her, he had only agreed on her being the spy because Amon had said so.
"I was about to do so, Mr. Sato, but you called me." She retorted.
"Give it to me then, this way I won't have to wait and I won't bother Amon a second time." He sounded angry now, he had never approved of her nature. She sighed.
"The office is quite discrete and small, despite the renown of the detective." Pause. "His brother is really friendly and nice and looks pretty naïve." Then she paused to ready herself to calm herself and sound neutral. "Mako, the detective, has a cool head and is quite sharp." Korra couldn't express how glad she was that this was a phone conversation, he was blushing immensely.
"I don't need you to tell me his perks, I have heard enough from my daughter already." He cut in sharply, sounding quite mad.
"Why do you hate him so much?" She asked without thinking. Crap. She knew exactly why, a firebender killed his wife years ago and now he had a secret aversion to benders, including the Avatar, and specially firebenders.
She didn't want to get on Mr. Sato's bad side, but the way that he had talked about Mako had made her really annoyed her
She wasn't even listening when a stern and mad voice responded through the phone.
"This conversation is over, I'll speak directly to Amon."
Click. He hanged up and Korra stayed with the receiver on her ear until the beep from the phone line made her realize she had been daydreaming again. She had been doing that a lot lately.
She called Amon next, after the last conversation she felt ready to face him. He sounded calm, he was sure that Korra could do the mission without a hitch. It killed her to lie to him, but she couldn't say the truth, if she did he would take her back to the base, she couldn't let it happen.
After reviewing her information about the objective, which she already knew by heart, she started getting ready for bed.
The phone started ringing, startling her.
She panicked for a second, thinking it could be Amon to reprimand her, or worse Mr. Sato.
After reassuring herself she picked it up carefully.
"Hi, Korra?" A feminine voice called out. Still tensed, Korra answered.
"Hello, who is this?" She sounded more terrified than she really was, what made the caller sound quite worried.
"Oh! I'm sorry to startle you, I'm Asami."
A giant sigh of relief escaped her throat before she could stop it, she was too glad that it wasn't Amon or Mr. Sato.
"Sorry, I've been on the edge since Ulva disappeared." She answered quite fast, surprising herself and feeling good that that response was a reflex.
She was quite curious about why Asami would call her, since they barely said a word to each other that morning.
"It's very nice to hear from you Asami, but is there something you need?" She asked as friendly as possible.
"I was invited to a thing but Mako is busy, so he can't make it. I was thinking if you would like to come along with me." Surprised, Korra didn't answer. Asami spoke before she could.
"I know this comes out of nowhere, but..." She trailed off and sighed.
"But...?" She answered before she could help it, she was quite curious.
"The truth is that because my father's position I don't have any friends of my age, except for Mako and Bolin so I'm quite curious about you. I would love to have a female friend of my age, so I would love to get to know you better." Asami sounded quite excited at the proposition, which made Korra smile, flattered. When she realised she was grinning, she forced herself not to.
Trying to regain focus, she answered to Asami.
"Sure, I would love to come, but I don't think I have anything fancy in my wardrobe to wear."
"Don't worry too much, I can lend you something. It's not a really fancy event, I can easily let you borrow some of my clothes." She could feel the excitement that Asami felt, and it raised her spirits enormously.
"That would be wonderful, thanks." Korra responded with a smile.
"I'll pick you up in fifteen minutes, be ready."
"Okay, bye, see you soon."
Korra hanged up the phone feeling elated, until she realized what was going on. Living with Amon, and being the Avatar imposed quite a bit, like Asami her position made it difficult to ave real friends. She had colleagues and classmates for fighting classes and such, but she never had close friends, except Amon, who was like family.
What really worried her was that, in just a few minutes Asami had made her feel that they were lifelong friends, even though they had just met that same day. That made her think about what would happen if the mission was accomplished, she would lose her first friend.
While rethinking Asami's proposal and making a pros and cons list of this "girl's night out" the intercom buzzed and looking at the watch in her nightstand realized that all that thinking had taken her the fifteen minutes that she had to decide, and she hadn't reached a conclusion yet.
Leaving all that thinking behind, she decided to go out and have fun, like they were real friends. She got down to the street as fast as she could, fearing she would change her mind.
They spent almost thirty minutes getting ready, mostly because Asami kept changing Korra's clothes, at first she complained about it, but after three tries she admitted defeat a let Asami dress her how she found more appropriate.
Korra wasn't the type of girl that liked to dress up, go shopping and put make-up on, mostly because she didn't have the time or the interest to do so.
Asami was the opposite of her, from the first time they met Korra knew that she was a girl that liked to take care of herself, and had a lot of fun doing it.
Even though Korra felt a little bit out of place in that situation, Asami's excitement after seeing each outfit was contagious, and she ended up having a really good time.
After a lot of changing clothes, makeup and hair styling, she was ready.
They had decided on tight jeans, which were really comfortable, and a backless shirt. It was more fancy than the clothes Korra had, but not fancy enough for a ball.
Asami styled her hair in a really nice ponytail, and put on her a little bit of makeup, just enough to still look natural.
The whole time they were talking, and Korra confirmed her suspicion about Asami, she was a very nice and sociable person.
Asami got ready quite fast, since she had been doing so while Korra was.
They were on their way to the musical, on Asami's car when she spoke.
"Do you mind if we stop at the agency for a little bit?"
At Korra's startled look she answered.
"Mako needs some paperwork he left at my house, he called while you were changing."
"Y-yea, sure, I don't mind." Korra answered nervously. She didn't mind strangers looking at her the way she was dressed right now, but Mako was a different thing entirely, for some reason it made her really nervous, she didn't want him thinking she looked stupid or something. Too nervous to say anything, they stayed silent the rest of the way to the acengy, while a lump was forming in Korra's throat.
He was tired, not just physically, but mentally as well. After Asami had left for lunch he had been working in his cases, Korra's case. There was another case that was bugging him since the first time he heard about it, though. It was an assault and kidnaping in a faraway land, nothing really, but for some reason it really irked him. He knew about the feeling he had with that case, it had happened before. They were cases that ended up being quite amazing and a big journey, the last time it had happened to him it had been with the avatar's case, one that was still open, by the way. The thing was that, even though with the other case he knew that there was something hidden between the equalists, he could figure out what had that case that had him that intrigued.
He had spend almost all afternoon looking into it, the names of the family, the events of that night, and such, but he couldn't crack it open no matter what, that's why he had asked Asami to fetch him some old kidnaping cases that he had at her house. She had agreed, still a little mad at him for diching her that night. He was sad that he had to cancel, but he knew that that night he couldn't leave his cases for a second.
There was just half an hour for the musical to start, so she had to be right around the corner, and like his thoughts summoned her, Asami appeared at the door knocking so he could let her in. He did and almost fell to the ground when he saw the person that was accompanying her to the musical, Korra.
