Chapter 4: The southern Air Temple

Kayla was walking with Sokka and Katara towards the air temple as Aang enthusiastically ran in front them. Kayla couldn't wait till they left the air temple. The massacre of the air benders was one of the most horrible things the Fire Nation had ever done and the shame over what her people had done made her sick to her stomach. She was brought out of her thoughts by Aang's excited voice.

"That's where we played air ball! And the bison slept over there!" He became quite and sighed. "But there's no one here anymore. Everything has changed." Kayla looked away, unable to face Aang.

"So," Sokka said, trying to change to the subject. "How does this game, air ball work?" The tactic worked and Aang immediately perked up and dragged Sokka away. Air ball was a brutal game. Kayla and Katara watched as the ball smacked Sokka repeatedly in the stomach.

"Cheering him up is painful." Sokka grumbled as he slowly got up off the ground. Something seemed to check him out and he walked over and stared closely at the ground. "Katara! Kayla! Come here!" The girls walked over to see what he was looking at; it was a helmet.

"That belonged to someone from the Fire Nation!" Sokka said, shooting an accusatory glance towards Kayla. Kayla glanced over at him and then looked away. Sokka looked over at Katara. "We should tell him the truth." Katara nodded and called Aang over. Kayla watched as Aang walked over to them, a huge smile on his face and she had to look away. She couldn't bear to watch this sweet, happy boy get crushed by the realization that his people had been wiped out. Kayla didn't think that Katara wanted to see that either and she wasn't surprised when Katara used water bending to bury the helmet. Aang was so happy to be at the air temple that he didn't even care when Katara had come up the excuse of a new water bending trick.

The three watched as Aang walked away and Sokka turned to Katara. "You should have told him. You can't protect him forever." As the three walked behind Aang, Kayla listened quietly as Sokka and Katara argued about telling Aang the truth about what happened to the Air Benders. They stopped talking when Aang ran up them.

"Hey, guys, I want you to meet someone!" Aang walked to a statue of a man. "This is Monk Gyatso! He taught me everything I know." Kayla listened absentmindedly as Aang told them a story of him and Gyatso.

"He sounds like a wise man, Aang." Kayla said.

"He was." Aang replied as he turned away and walked towards the stairs that lead to the entrance of the air temple.

"Aang, do you really think that these people could have survived in here for a hundred years?"

"It's possible. I survived in that ice berg that long." Aang said as he went to stand in front of the doors. "And someone in here might be able to tell me more about being the Avatar."

"How do we get in?" Sokka asked.

"By air bending." Aang told Sokka as he airbended some air into the horns that sat next to the door. The air acted as a key and opened the doors to the air temple. "Hello!" Aang called out as he walked inside. Sokka, Katara, and Kayla followed Aang inside and they were met with a room full of statues.

"What's with all of the statues? I'm starving!" Sokka complained.

"These statues feel familiar, like I know them but I've never met any of them before." Aang said, walking closer to the statues. "Hey, I found an air bender!"

"And there's a Water Bender next to the Air Bender." Katara said as she examined the statues closely. "All of the statues are in a pattern: Air, water, earth and fire."

"That's the cycle of the Avatars," Said Aang.

"That's because they are avatars!" Katara said. "That's why they feel so familiar to you, Aang. These are your past lives!" Aang walked to the statue of a firebender and seemed to go into a trance.

"Aang!" Katara said as she tried to shake him out of his daze. She looked at the statue. "Who is that?"

"What?" Aang said, dazed. "Oh, that's Roku; he was the Avatar before me."

"You were a firebender?!" Sokka said, shocked. "I knew there was a reason I didn't trust at first."

"Hey!" Kayla shouted incredulously. "Not all firebenders are bad people!"

Katara looked at Aang in confusion and then at the statue. "How do you know his name?"

Aang shook his head, looking just as confused as Katara. "I don't know I just knew who he was."

"You just keep getting weirder and weirder," Sokka told Aang and then got quite. He looked around. "I think there's someone in here with us." Sokka ran behind a statue with Aang, Kayla, and Katara following closely behind him. "It must be a firebender!" Kayla glared at him. "Everyone be quite!"

"You're not being exactly quite." Kayla growled at him.

"Quite!" Sokka and Aang said. Everyone got quite as they saw a shadow coming towards them. Sokka pulled out his weapon. "Everyone get ready." Kayla got ready to attack the mystery person in the temple. Sokka jumped out from behind the statue, weapon raised ready to attack, but he stopped in his tracks when he got a good look at the stranger. It was a lemur.

"It's a lemur!" Aang said excitedly.

"Dinner!" Sokka said, his mouth watering. Aang took a small step towards the lemur and held out his hand.

"Don't listen to him," Aang told the lemur. "We're not going to eat you. I'm gonna make you my pet."

"Not if I get to him first!" Sokka said and started to run towards the lemur. The lemur scurried away, screaming. Aang was close on Sokka's hills, trying to catch the lemur first.

Kayla looked over at Katara. "Are they always like this?" Kayla asked Katara.

"All of the time," Katara replied. "Come on. We better make sure they don't hurt themselves." Kayla and Katara went to look for the two boys. Finding them wasn't too hard, all the girls had to do was follow the noises of crashing items and the cries of pain. They came to a room and stopped in shocked. Aang was staring at a pile of skeletons and Fire Nation uniforms that were littered on the floor.

"Firebenders?" Aang asked, more to himself then to the others in the room. He walked closer and found the body of a Monk among the Firebenders. Kayla heard him whisper something, but couldn't make out what he was saying.

When Kayla saw Aang start to cry she said, "Aang, I'm sure that Sokka wasn't going to actually eat the lemur." She cast a glare at Sokka who was looking at Aang worriedly. "Right Sokka?"

"What?" Sokka asked. "Oh right, of course! That lemur didn't look good anyways. Come on Aang, let's get out of here." Katara walked over to Aang and gasped in surprise when she saw his face. His eyes and the arrows on his head had turned blue. He looked angry. Kayla had never seen Aang angry before, for a while she had believed that he couldn't even get angry.

"Aang?" Katara said concerned. "Are you alright?" A sphere of energy surrounded Aang and got bigger, throwing Kayla, Sokka, and Katara out of the building.

"What's wrong with Aang?" Sokka asked.

"Aang must have activated his Avatar spirit!" Katara said. She started to walk towards Aang, using her hands to shield her face from the wind. "I'm going to try to calm him down!"

"Well do it before he blows us away!" Sokka yelled.

"Be careful!" Kayla yelled after Katara.

Katara slowly made her way to Aang and tried to calm him. "Aang, I know you're upset. And I know how much it hurts to lose someone that you love. I lost my mother when I was little. You still have a family Aang! Sokka and I, we're your family!" Kayla watched as Aang turned to face Katara and slowly descended towards the ground. Sokka and Kayla walked over to join Katara.

"Katara and I aren't going to let anything else happen to you," Sokka said as Aang collapsed into Katara's arms. "I promise."

"I won't let anything happen to you either," Kayla said.

"I'm sorry," Aang said tiredly.

"It's ok," said Katara.

"Yeah, it's not your fault," Kayla told Aang gently.

"You guys were right," Aang said sadly. "The Fire Nation came here and if they came here then they went to the other Air Temples to," Aang closed his eyes. "I really am the last air bender."

A few days later, the group was ready to leave the air temple. "How will I get help from Roku if I can't even talk to him?"

"I think you'll find a way to talk to him," Katara told him. They heard a noise and turned to see the lemur from the temple dump some fruit and nuts at Sokka's feet. Sokka plopped down on the ground and started eating ravenously.

"Looks like you found a new friend, Sokka," Kayla laughed. The lemur ran over to Aang climbed up his body to rest on his head.

"Hey there," Aang said, scratching the lemur on the head. Aang glanced up at the lemur. "You, I and Appa are that's left of the Southern Air Temple and we have to stick to together." He turned to Katara, Sokka and Kayla. "Katara, Sokka, Kayla, meet the newest member of our family. I am going to call him Momo."
