~September 16, 2003: Green Hill Elementary School (8:00 A.M)~

Holding onto his mother's hand as tightly as he can, five-year-old Miles Prower is nervous as he walked in the first-grade hall filled with hand made drawings hanging on the walls, most of them being scribbles to him. He can draw better than any of those students. Why?

Well, for one, a five-year-old like Miles shouldn't be in a first-grade hall in the first place; he should be at the Kindergarten hall instead! However, he managed to skip a grade as his teacher noticed that his skills surpass any other Kindergarten in his old school. He felt like a genius compared to the other young four to six year olds since it's just a Pre-K and Kindergarten school. However, he was forced to say good-bye to everyone at that school as he had to transfer to the closest Elementary school that offered him to be a 1st grader.

And of all schools, it had to be Green Hill Elementary School; a school known to have a friendly setting... Or so he thought so.

Miles remembered hearing from one of his old classmates that his sister who attended there was isolated from the others due to her skin color being different than everyone else in her class; she had a natural tannish skin compared to everyone's white skin. There's also an incident that involved a boy who went into a fight because somebody called him a 'knucklehead'. Ooh, Miles hopes he doesn't get teased because of his twin tails.

Yep. He had them since he was born due to a gene that he obtained from his grandparents who had twin fox tails. Both of his parents understood that, yet at his old school, only his teachers knew his situation. Most of the students would make fun of him, calling him harsh nicknames such as mutant, fox freak, or the most notable one: Tails. Only a few students actually liked him for being himself, ignoring the fox tails. But despite this, he usually sat alone during lunch, fearing he'll get teased again. Even those who liked him didn't sat with him due to the pressure from their friends.

Miles, or Tails as his old school mainly remembered him as, just wishes he will have tons of friends and won't eat lunch all alone.

Soon enough, Tails and his mother were standing in front of the classroom door where he's going to attend as of today. According to the red flower sign that's hanging on the door, it reads "Ms. Hope Kintober's classroom". Surrounding the floral sign, there's small flower nametags in different colors that has the name of every classmate. Almost every one of them were either red or pink, except for one that's blue. Tails read the name of the classmate who had the only blue flower in there; his future classmate's name is Ryan Griffith.

As Tails is finished reading, his mom looked down at him and asked, "Miles, are you ready for your first day of 1st grade?"

Tails looked at his small fox tails, swishing side to side, and answered his mom, "No. What if everyone makes fun of me because of my tails? I don't want people to hate me because of them! I'm not even gonna make any friends!"

His mom knew Tails would say that. It's every parents fear that their child wouldn't be accepted by others due to their weird quirks. For normal people, it would range from liking food others hate, preferring to read instead of playing, or listening to music that's not considered normal. But for Tails' case, it's because of his twin fox tails. No one would believe in his story about his grandparents!

Knowing this would happen to him, his mom told him, "Miles, don't say that. I'm sure there's someone who will be your friend."

"Y... You sure?" Tails wondered.

"Of course! You're a gifted and talented child, and I wouldn't trade you for any other kid in the world."

"Even if they offered you a billion dollars?!"

"Not even if that happens. I promise, Miles."

"Mommy!" Tails smiled, giving his mom a hug.

After staying like this for twenty seconds, his mom released him from the hug when the classroom door opened, revealing Tails' new teacher: Ms. Kintober. He knew that she's going to be a nice teacher already because of her appearance. She's close to his mother's height (5'2 ft.), has bright short blond hair, wearing a buttoned red shirt with a blue skirt and black strapped flats with white ankle socks. Ms. Kintober smiled at Tails, happy to see her new student all ready for his first day. He even looked ready; a white and yellow striped polo shirt, khakis with a belt, and brown sneakers.

"Oh, you must be Miles Prower from Cocoa Kindergarten! Am I right?" Ms. Kintober asked her new student.

"Yes," Tails answered as he slowly nodded his head.

"Well, it's nice to meet-" Ms. Kintober paused her sentence when she spotted the five-year-old's yellow fox tails, still swishing from side to side. She thought it was an accessory, but she almost screamed when she realized that they're real. However, Ms. Kintober didn't scream when Tails' mom stepped in.

"Please don't freak out, Ms. Kintober," Mrs. Prower pleaded the 1st grader teacher. "I know my son's tails are abnormal, but please understand that they come from my mother and father."

"Eh?"

"My son thinks he's not going to make friends because of them. His classmates at his old school treated him badly," Mrs. Prower explained to Ms. Kintober. "I hope your class will treat him well."

"Don't worry, Mrs. Prower. I'll make sure my class will give him a warm welcome," Ms. Kintober reassured the mother. "You can leave now, Mrs. Prower. Miles is in good hands with me."

"Alright," Mrs. Prower said to the teacher. Before leaving, she kissed Tails on the cheek and whispered, "Have fun."

Tails watched as his mother left the hallway and right when she turned left, he couldn't see his mom anymore. He assumes she's going to the front entrance/exit door and leave. Of course she would. She's not coming back until about 3 o'clock to pick him up.

After seeing his mom leaving, Ms. Kintober grabbed Tails' hand and guided him to the classroom, where the first thing he saw were children doing different activities. Some were just in their group of desks reading a book or coloring their picture, others were running around, playing tag, or in the ground playing with wooden blocks or making a tower with Lego pieces in different colors. Most of the students stopped with what they were doing to look at their teacher, holding the new student's hand. When the students heard that they'll be getting a new classmate, all of them were excited that they have one more person to play with.

However, before they can greet Tails "Good morning", most of them have spotted Tails' twin tails, currently being dragged in the ground. One of the students decided to step on one of his tails with his sneakers. But that step ended up being a painful stomp as a few students heard it and Tails yelped in pain and fell to the floor. Tails attempted to get up, but he only ended up falling again as his other tail ended up being stepped on. This happened several times to him, most of the students stepping on his tails every time he attempted to get off of the floor, but no matter how many he tries to get up, the stomps were getting worse that he screamed loudly, fearing he's going to bleed.

As Tails thought he was going to get beaten up more, Ms. Kintober put a red whistle in her mouth, blowing as hard as she can to make it loud enough for everyone to hear, even to those who were reading and drawing, oblivious on what happened in the past quick seconds.

"Okay, that's enough, all of you!" Ms. Kintober demanded her students. "This is not how you treat your new classmate."

All of her students looked down at the floor, not wanting to see their teacher getting so angry at them. Only a few of them just straight out stared at Ms. Kintober, smiling and laughing, not caring on what recently happened.

Ms. Kintober, however, caught a male student giggling, which stopped when she asked him, "Roy, what's so funny? Care to share with the rest of the class?"

Roy, the boy with messy red hair, told his teacher, "I can't believe the new kid is such a crybaby because I stepped on his dumb tails!"

Half of the class laughed with Roy, thought the other half were yelling to the others to be quiet. But what they didn't know is that Tails is still on the floor, sobbing with his head face-down, his tears soaking on the blue hard carpet.

However, the tears stopped when Tails felt somebody's hand grabbing his, and he looked up to see who was it because it's way too small to be Ms. Kintober's. And even if it was her, she's currently scolding the students for their actions, mainly Roy. When he did looked up, he saw that it was a boy older than him, wearing the brightest smile Tails has ever seen. Heck, the boy's appearance was unique! He had bright blue hair that's a tad messy but clean for the most part, emerald green eyes, skin tanner than Tails', wearing a red and blue plaid shirt, blue pants, and bright red sneakers.

"Hey, are you alright?" the kid asked Tails while getting him up back to his feet.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Tails answered. "Thank you."

"It's no problem!"

The kid smiled to Tails before he went back to his seat that has his name tag taped to the desk. Tails wondered who that kid was. Maybe he's the one with the only blue flower at the front door. Hmm...

But before he can think, Ms. Kintober guided Tails to his desk, where it's in groups of four. Luckily, he wasn't stuck with Roy, but that doesn't mean he isn't free from all the teasing he has received. The remaining three students, two boys and one girl, all sat down in their desks, turning their heads away from Tails as they don't even want to talk to him. As the teacher is taking attendance, one of the students muttered to him in a voice that he can hear but the teacher can't:

"Life gave you these tails because it hates you!"

Not even noon and already, Tails has already got a taste of what appears to be the child version of prison!

~Lunch Time: Cafeteria (12:30 P.M)~

Just like always, Tails sat as far from his classmates as he silently ate his lunch, all alone. And that's how it should be. He didn't want anyone next to him. They'll make fun of him because of his twin tails, like they always do everyday, in school and outside of school, no thanks to those at Cocoa Kindergarten. It's not fair for him...

But just as one of his classmates has stated: "Life gave you these tails because it hates you!"

Life surely has a cruel way of telling Tails that it hates him. Just how he wishes that life will be good to him for once. If only...

Argh! Whatever! Tails is never going to make friends after this morning! How come? A girl in his group put the blame on Tails when he supposedly spilled paint on her new t-shirt when it was actually one of the boys, and if that's even worse, he was picked last for a game of basketball at recess an hour ago and the ball slammed right into his face, had his answers erased on his worksheet, and had red and blue paint all over his polo shirt by the girl as punishment! Ms. Kintober gave Tails a brown t-shirt so she can hand-wash it while they're at lunch. And yes, she made sure his group were punished by forcing them to eat in the classroom in separate places.

While Tails is glad that his group got what they truly deserve, it doesn't help that no one, not even those in different classes, wanted to sit with him. They were sitting with their friends, or sitting with a new group of people in order to make new friends. No matter what, all of the tables, except his, were filled with chatter and laughter on how their day has been going.

I'm so jealous... Tails thought as he took a bite of his salad his mom prepared him. Everyone has friends and I don't. It's not fair! I just wish I can make one friend!

Before Tails can stab another piece of his salad, he saw the blue-haired kid from his class with his tray of pizza that actually looks decent, and he appeared to be coming towards to where Tails is sitting! He couldn't believe it! Tails thought this was a joke! Nobody would want to be near with the kid with the freaky twin tails!

But this kid, already sitting next to Tails, is willing to sit with him. He had that nice smile that Tails remembered this morning and appeared to have no means to hurt him. He did helped Tails back then.

"Hey!" the boy greeted Tails.

Not sure what he should say, Tails didn't answer at all to the boy.

"Uh... hello?" he tried calling to his new classmate, waving his hand over the blond's aqua eyes. "Are you still alive?"

"Eh?!" Tails finally answered as the boy's hand is out of the way. "Oh, I'm good. Thanks for asking."

"No problem. So, you're the new kid that came from Cocoa Kindergarten?"

"Y...yeah... Why?"

"Well, my siblings are Pre-K students there at that school, and I actually wanted to meet the genius I hear them talk about almost every night at dinner."

Huh? His siblings didn't notice his twin tails at all?! Well, they are separated by grade, Pre-K on one side and Kindergarten on the other side, so there's a good chance they haven't seen Tails at all.

"So," the boy continued talking, "I heard you can name more colors than everyone else and can already multiply numbers in your head! Plus, there's a rumor that my sister, Sonia, told me that you made a TV with nothing but a paperclip and-"

"Hey, can I ask you one question?" Tails interrupted the azure-haired boy.

"Go ahead."

Tails closed his container of salad since he knows that he's not even gonna finish all of them anyway. Once completely sealed, Tails asked the boy, "Why are you so nice to me?"

"Huh?" the boy seemed to be confused on what Tails is asking him. "What do you mean by that?"

"You know what I'm talking about! Helping me out this morning and now you're sitting with me!"

"So what's the big deal?"

"I'm a freak with two fox tails since I was a baby and I have no way of getting rid of them!" Tails yelled to the boy, though not that loud where everyone can hear.

The boy remembered seeing two fox tails from him, and he thought they were part of a belt or something precious to him. He didn't think they were real. That would explain why Tails was screaming in pain and why the white tip of his tails had brown spots all over; coming from the dirt of the student's shoes. It's still there and he knows that Tails would like that stain to be gone. And he knows he'll make it disappear. Fast.

"Uh... I noticed that there's a stain on your tail," Sonic pointed out.

"I do?" Tails turned around to see brown dirt on the white fur. Guess he didn't noticed it until now.

"Yeah, I'll go get it in a flash! I promise!" the boy told Tails as he got off his seat.

"Wait! You don't have-"

But Tails witnessed that the boy ended up sprinting out of the cafeteria and in just exactly three seconds (yes, Tails counted according to the clock), the azure-haired boy came back, holding three paper brown sheets that were already soaked with water. Tails thought this is impossible as there's no way someone would be that fast when running. The closest bathroom is at least twenty feet away from here, and even if he used that, there's no way he would ever get here in less than a few seconds! The blue-haired boy searched for the stain that he spotted and once he found it, he started scrubbing it as hard as he can, seeing that his efforts were paying off very well.

As the boy is washing away the dirt, Tails asked the boy, "Hey, how were you able to run that fast... Uh..."

He wondered why Tails didn't finish his sentence until he realized that the new student wanted to know his name! Oops...

"Ryan."

"Huh? What was that?" Tails asked him to repeat his name.

"I'm Ryan Griffith, but you can call me Sonic," the boy answered to Tails. "What about you?"

Oh, so this is Ryan Griffith; the one with the lone blue flower earlier. Tails never thought it would be the one who helped him out and sit with him at lunch.

"My name is Miles Prower," Tails started to introduce himself, "But everyone at my old school called me 'Tails' because..."

Sonic knew Tails paused his sentence because the answer is so obvious. The azure-haired boy decided to finish Tails' sentence after cleaning the dirty spot on the tails, "It's because of your tails."

"Yeah. I feel like they serve no purpose but to make my life as miserable as possible. And so far, they're doing a good job of doing that."

"Don't say stuff like that!" Sonic slightly yelled at Tails, slamming both of his hands on the table. "Your tails aren't here to make your life miserable!"

Tails has never heard someone his own age, or close to his age, to say something like that. Most of the time, kids would say that his tails are nothing but a mistake his mother made and should put himself at a local zoo where he would be the main attraction. Or worse, a carnival where the ringmaster will treat him with little to no respect and forced to eat little meals everyday that did little to keep his hunger under control. And looking at his tails, it might be true.

But his parents told him that his tails are something special. They said they hold some special power that his grandparents can do. He just never wanted to figure out. Yet with Sonic, a boy he just met today, may help him with doing that.

"And like you saw earlier, I can go super fast whenever I run without tiring myself. Do you see me complaining about them?" Sonic questioned Tails.

"No," Tails answered, his head slumped on the table. "Having super speed is awesome to have."

"I know! It's way past cool!"

"Way past cool?" Tails wondered about that weird saying.

"Oh, it means that if something is cool to me, I can't find any other words besides 'cool' to describe it, so I say 'way past cool' instead. It's something my Uncle Chuck says a lot."

"Really? That's a nice saying, Ryan."

"Hey there. Like I said, 'Sonic' is fine," he informed Tails. "Everybody calls me that because of my awesome speed!"

"Like sonic speed or sonic boom?" Tails guessed.

"Yeah! I think just a few days ago, I broke something called the sound barrier and went super fast!" Sonic explained as he started eating his pizza. "Doesn't that sound awesome?"

Tails thought that someone like Sonic would never break the sound barrier. It's impossible to do so just by running, but for Sonic's case, it seems like it's no problem to him. Heck, he witnessed his incredible speed just a few minutes ago.

"It does! I wonder if I can do something with my tails," Tails wondered, his head off of the table.

"I'm sure you can, Tails," Sonic assured him.

"Thank-" But Tails didn't get a chance to finish his sentence when he felt somebody's feet are stepping on both of his tails. And they weren't small feet, oh no, but they were the size of a bear's feet. Well, at least to a 1st grader when they look at a 5th grader boy. And it seems that the 5th grader wasn't alone. He appeared to have two other friends that appear to be the same age and have similar tall heights ranging from 4'4 ft to 4'6 ft compared to Tails' tiny 3'3 ft and Sonic's 3'6 ft.

One of the boys who noticed that his shoes were on Tails' fox tails, he yelled at him, "Hey, kid! Put your costume tails away!"

"They're not a costume!" Tails snapped back.

"Oh, so they're real?"

"Yeah!"

The boy smiled to his friends after hearing this fact from Tails. He lifted his shoes off of Tails yellow tails, but instead of saying sorry, he and his friends stomped on the 1st grader's tails, causing Tails to slide off of his chair! This is worse than what he received earlier this morning! Yes, he knows that the 5th grader's feet are a lot bigger than his classmates, but he didn't realize that the pain would be five times worse! By the time they stomped his tails for the sixth time, his tails started to bleed, soaking his white and yellow fur and slowly dripping to the floor. Tails pleaded the 5th graders to stop, but he sees that it's no use as they aren't listening. But that's not the worse part; the students who are witnessing this were just laughing at him and there are some who wanted to stop but were too scared to help out, fearing they'll be part of this torture.

However, Sonic clenched his small teeth tightly, hating the display he's forced to see. He doesn't like anyone hurting others who don't have any means of defending themselves; especially if they're small and frail. He wants to kick the 5th graders butts, but if he does, he's going to get in huge trouble! But Sonic knows how he can handle this without even laying a scratch on him.

Getting off of his seat, Sonic took a few steps back from the table and started to sprint towards the boys, screaming on the top of his lungs, "Look out suckers! Here I come!"

The 5th graders didn't noticed Sonic coming towards them in incredible speeds, and decided to get out of the way to avoid getting run over by the 1st grader. However, they stumbled after they all tripped on a chair leg and were screaming that they don't want to get hurt. But to their surprise, Sonic passed them easily and grabbed Tails arm, dragging him to the front door of the cafeteria.

"Oh, look at that! Running away like a coward!" one of the 5th graders teased Sonic and Tails.

His free hands clenching tightly from that comment, Sonic replied back with, "Oh, no. You guys are cowards!"

The students watching this event yelled out, "Ohhh!" after hearing that comment. Even one of the janitors did so as well.

Furious that someone younger than them would say something like that, one of the 5th graders asked, "How come we're the cowards?!"

"It's easy. You guys picked on someone smaller than you instead of someone your size. And you think it's funny to pick on those weaker than you or different just to get some power. That's just stupid."

"WHAT?!" they snapped at the 1st grader. "LET'S GET HIM!"

Looking at the raging 5th graders, Sonic simply dashed to the other side of the door and watched the three 5th graders slam straight into the door as they halted a bit too late.

Still holding onto Sonic's hand, Tails looked at the azure-haired boy after witnessing what happened in the past few minutes. Tails couldn't believe that Sonic would stand up to someone bigger than him just so Tails wouldn't suffer anymore. Besides the teachers, no one would dare to give back up to Tails before... until today.

"Sonic... That..." Tails didn't know what to say besides, "That was way past cool."

Noticing that Tails is using his personal catchphrase, Sonic smiled and said, "Yeah. It was cool when I defended you from those bullies."

"Thank you, Sonic," Tails told Sonic before he muttered, "Ow!" due to the injuries he had on his tails.

Looking at Tails fox tails, Sonic told Tails, "Let's get you to the nurse's office and she'll check out those injuries on those tails. Alright, buddy?"

"Sure, Sonic..." Tails nodded, a bit shocked that Sonic would use 'that' word.

Did he just call me 'buddy'? Tails questioned himself in his thoughts as Sonic is guiding Tails to the nurse's office. Hearing someone call Tails their buddy makes him feel light and excited that he may fly!

Literally! As they were close to the nurse's office, he felt that his feet were no longer touching the ground and saw that Sonic is in the ground, smiling on what he's witnessing! Tails wondered how he's flying, until he turned around to see that his tails were rotating, and what's more surprising, his wounds have magically disappeared, as if they never existed before! This has never happened before... Before he met Sonic.

All of his life, Tails wondered if this is the special powers his parents kept mentioning; flying and having the pain disappear in just a few minutes. Now that Tails thinks about it, earlier this morning, he felt a lot of pain from his tails after getting stomped, but five minutes later, they're gone. Same thing with the incidents back at Cocoa Kindergarten! After getting one of his tails getting stuck from a large book, the pain vanished a few minutes later. Guess the pain disappearing part is the one thing he experienced before, but not the flying part.

How come he never experienced it before?! Well, his parents mentioned one part to him before:

"Another special thing will happen to you once you find someone who really accepts you for being you."

And that someone who made him feel like an actual human being is none other than Sonic. Better yet, both of them have special powers that a lot of people don't have. Different, yet unique at the same time.

"Hey, Sonic! Check it out!" Tails yelled to Sonic.

"I know! You're flying with your tails!" Sonic replied to his new friend. "And I bet you're fine. Am I right?"

"Yeah!" Tails answered with a smile.

However, Tails can't stay in the air forever. He needed to fly down to the ground, and surprise, he's able as his tails slowly stopped spinning and descended to the ground. When his feet were touching the floor, Tails quickly ran to Sonic and hugged him tight, but not too tight. Sonic wasn't expecting Tails to hug him, but after what he went through for the past few hours, he didn't seem to mind it.

"Tails, you happy?" asked Sonic.

"Of course!" Tails cheerfully answered. "I'm happy that I met you!"

"And I'm happy that we're now friends, Tails."

Tails day went from miserable to joyful all because he met Sonic; his first friend who liked him for who he is and hopes they continue to remain friends in the future.

Strong, brave, yet rash and silly

That's my best friend in four words

But each friend is different

And they're all way past cool

Especially to him

My very best friend

Author's Note: Here's the latest chapter to "100 Sparks Fly" with the tale of how Sonic and Tails first met in "Gray Flame". Surprisingly, it took my at least 3 days to make this one... Wow... I must be really fast.

Anyway, if you liked this one-shot, please leave a review! And here's the preview of the next one-shot.

As Amy is applying the last of her strawberry lip gloss on her lips, she twisted the lip gloss container closed and put it in her small make-up bag before leaving the bathroom and checking herself in the mirror in her room. She wanted to make sure her mint green polka-dotted dress isn't stained with any traces of her pink-red lip gloss. Otherwise, her chances with Sonic would go down. Amy wishes tonight would go great for her. Why?

Because according to the calendar, today is a special night: it's July 1st! That's the day where her friends, especially Sonic, are going to Angel Park to see something special at night. Yes, there will be a new moon on that day, but people were gossiping that something other than the moon and the tiny stars will be on the night sky. Maybe a comet? A surprise fireworks show? A UFO? Okay, maybe not that one, but whatever it is, she'll enjoy tonight as long as she's with Sonic.

That would be the best moment for Amy.
