Two hours later...

"Oh my gosh..." DJ said, her eyes filling with tears. "Oh, Matt, she is beautiful. Kimmy would love this."

"Look at those eyes..." Matt replied, "She's so small. That's my kid."

"That's your kid."

"She needs her mother."

Matt and DJ waited another hour to get a glimpse of Kimmy. She lay on the hospital bed, her eyes closed, her face scraped and bruised.

"Well hunny...we did it...we had a baby..." Matt said as he sat down, "...and she's as beautiful and perfect as you thought she was going to be."

"She's doing good baby...now we need you to get better. You have two beautiful girls who need you."

"...and a best friend who needs you, too." DJ replied, wiping the tears from her eyes.

"I don't know how I'm going to break this to Ramona." Matt said, his eyes tearing up.

"Matt, I know Ramona is your step daughter, but she's had such a hard time adjusting to all of this. I think I should tell her."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm her godmother." DJ replied. "And she has known me a lot longer than she's known you..she's had a tough year...with the wedding, and the pregnancy, and now this..."

"Okay." Matt agreed. "Well if you're going to talk to Ramona...do you mind if I hang out here tonight? Can she stay with you?"

"She can stay with me as long as you guys need."

"Thanks, DJ."

DJ drove home that night, but as she walked into the house she found herself numb. She slowly placed her purse on the coffee table. Stephanie came from the kitchen.

"How's Kimmy?" Steph asked.

"It doesn't look good Steph." DJ replied, sniffling.

"I'm sorry." Steph said, pulling her sister into a hug. "Anything I can do?"

"Watch the kids tomorrow while I hold down the pet clinic? Matt's going to be taking some time off...it'll be just me...I'm the only vet.."

"Sure, Deej, I got this covered. Does Ramona know yet?"

"Not yet. I need to go tell her."

"Is the baby okay?" Steph asked. DJ could hear the concern in her voice.

"That's probably the best news to come from this...the baby is fine, she was born tonight."

Steph smiled and nodded. She placed one hand on her sister's shoulder. DJ finally mustered up the courage to go upstairs.

"Where's mom?!" Ramona demanded, as soon as she saw her.

"Sit down Ramona." DJ replied, taking her hand.

"This isn't good..."

"Ramona...your mom was in a car accident today."

"I want to see her!" Ramona demanded.

"Hunny, right now, she's not awake."

Ramona felt the tears pouring down her face as DJ hugged her. She pulled away and looked directly into DJ's eyes, "The baby?!"

DJ smiled and began wiping her own tears. "That's one good thing to have come from all this. Your baby sister was born today. The doctors did an emergency c-section."

"I want to see her!" Ramona replied, excitedly. "How is she?! She's early!"

"She's early, and she's tiny. You were tiny, too, and you weren't early. Kimmy just has tiny babies. She weighed exactly four pounds. She is doing alright, since she's early she can't quite breathe on her own yet, so they have her hooked up to a machine that is helping her breathe."

"Can I see mom?!"

"I don't know if you should..."

"I'm fourteen." Ramona replied. "...and I have access to Google. There's not much that I haven't seen by now!"

DJ giggled. "...but this is your mom...I don't know if you're ready to see something like this...she's got cuts and bruises, and she's not awake..."

"When I was little, every time I got a cut mom would kiss it and say "all better." Come on, Aunt Deejay, I need to see her. She needs me. If nothing else, she just needs to hear my voice and know that I'm there with her..."
