Chapter 3: Apathy Syndrome

AFTER CLASS:

"Well how was I supposed to know her favorite author right on the spot?" Junpei groaned, stretching out his arms and legs while sitting, and sliding back into his position with a yawn.

"Um, Ms. Toriumi pretty much talked about it the whole time you were staring off into space," Minako pointed out, while putting her English book back in her bag, along with her other things.

"I mean, how could I not?" Junpei groaned some more, while lazily pulling up his unzipped bag from the floor. "All she does is yap about her life," he added, as he put his bag strap on his shoulder.

"I don't know, but - it seems like you might be getting a case of…" Minako playfully paused and stood up from her seat, then gently whispered into his ear, "A-PA-THY syndrome."

Junpei's eyes grew big from what she said, which then made him reply in confusion, "Whaaaaat? Did I just hear you say 'a panty syndrome'?"

"What the hell, no!" Minako blurted out, and then realized she had yelled awfully loud. Oh great, now everyone's looking at me… and it's because I decided to tell a joke – to someone who wouldn't get it.

Minako rolled her eyes and headed out the classroom, while pulling his jacket sleeve, giving him no choice but to follow her lead. "I meant Apathy, not a panty!" She yelled, putting both hands on her hips.

"Well geez, sorry! It's not like I have time to watch the news," Junpei groaned again, as they then started walking side by side down the hallway.

"Let me tell you about it then!" Minako excitedly said, suddenly skipping with a beat down the halls, like a child. "It's when you just sit and stare at the wall, all day! Sounds like someone familiar, huh?"

"Ahaha okay, I get it, I get it." Junpei laughed, putting his hands up in the air, as if surrendering. "But hey, it's 'cause I slept late last night. I had trouble – you know – sleeping."

Minako let out small laugh, and decided to stop thinking about good comebacks. The poor boy surrendered, she thought.

Junpei then stole the moment of silence saying, "Well, I'm sure a smart girl like you knows the way out of the school by now, right? I gotta go and catch up on my sleep! See ya!" Before Minako got a chance to say how early it still was, he already ran off the other way.

Dear Diary,

It was another easy school day today. Although this time, I went back to the dorm by myself, and was then "welcomed" by Yukari and this older guy who looked like Jesus in a suit – only from behind, though. I forgot his name and well, even he admitted that it was hard to remember.

So anyway, I did remember him say that he was the Chairman of the School, so yeah, I should be honored that a busy guy like him, came to welcome me. Or is that part of his job? Yeah… most likely.

Well anyway, he was a really jolly guy when he talked. Even though he spoke so fancily, he 'evened' it out with his – well, jokes, that I felt like I was forced to laugh at. But at least he was trying to "break the ice"… I guess.

Although when we started talking about "serious stuff", like when I told him how I saw something odd around the place, he pretty much just told me to shrug it off…

Hmmm, am I sensing some vibes with these people or am I just being paranoid? They're being so apathetic about some things…

I still can't forget about what happened when I first got here… and that boy I met with the striped pajamas… who could he be?

The Chairman told me that only four of us live in this dorm… Me, Yukari, Mitsuru, and this Akihiko guy, that I haven't met yet. Hmmm, maybe he could be Akihiko's little brother? I was probably part of some "dorm prank" that night…

P.S. Introduce yourself to other dorm mate!
