Matt presses the buttons on his controller, while Mello sits on the couch next to him biting off little pieces of his chocolate. Matt comes in a bit closer to the TV, his tongue sticking out, concentrating, and jamming the buttons faster. It goes on like this for some time before the words "You Won!" appear on the screen. He punches the air celebrating his victory.
Mello smiles wryly. "Nice job, geek," he says teasingly.
"Shut up, snickers," Matt jokes back.
Mello is about to comment on the nickname, but hesitates, seeing Matt smiling back at him adorably, so he brushes it off. He bites off the last piece of his chocolate bar and reaches into his pocket but finds nothing. "I'm gonna go buy more chocolate," Mello calls, walking out the door, waving his hand.
"Alright!" Matt replies flamboyantly, like the fabulous rainbow that he is.
Mello leaves.
Matt moves over to a shelf of games searching for a game to reply. He sighs. "I've played these over a million times…" Matt sits up and reaches for his coat. "I heard that there was a really cool game that came just a few months ago. I should order it while I can!" He rushes out the door, excited, after leaving a note for Mello.
…
Matt walks in the door and drops casually onto the couch. He strains his ears for a moment, but the room is completely silent other than his own voice.
"Alrighty, so he's not back yet." He cringes at the overly depressed tone of his voice. Am I really that obsessed?
He glances around the room for something to do. His eyes fall on the old karaoke machine that Linda had left in his room last time she was over. He had said that he would never use it at the time, but he honestly has nothing else to do, so he might as well. Matt crosses the room and switches on the machine. Without looking at the CD or what song he clicks play, and the words "When I see your smile," appear on the screen as a sweet sound plays through the speakers.
Matt starts to sing quietly to himself, "tears run down my face." He gradually sings louder. "I can't replace." Matt blushes bright red when he suddenly sees Mello's face in his mind. He continues to sing. Not long after as he get's to the climax of the song he starts to tear up. "Mello." He whispers quietly.
"What?"
Matt jumps, spinning around, flushing even brighter before he whips around to turn the machine off. "Um, nothing." He tried to inconspicuously wipe his tears away.
"Matt, were you... crying?"
He wipes the last bit of tears and sniffs, but doesn't respond. Mello walks over to Matt, concern on his face. After hesitating for moment, Mello hugs him, smiling softly. Matt buries his face in Mello's shoulder. "I'm sorry, I'm being stupid."
"Don't say that, Mattie."
Matt bites his lip, holding in a happy giggle at the nickname. "You're the best, Mell Bar."
Mello raises his eyebrow and pulls back, still holding Matt's shoulders, examining his face quizzically. "Why does my nickname change every time?"
"'Cause it can, that's why." He smiles lightly. "And I'm gonna come up with a bunch more," he says defiantly.
"Oh, please don't."
"Too late. Already started."
Mello groans, hitting his forehead with his hand. "Why? Why do I have to put up with you?" he teases.
"Because you love me…?" Matt trails off uncertainly, not wanting to make it awkward, but hoping that he was right.
Mello blushes furiously, "Y-yeah…?" He also trails off. Both boys were stepping cautiously, not wanting to ruin their friendship, but wishing that it was something more…
"D-do you..?" Mello asks hesitantly.
"Um…" Matt blushes and turns away. "Y-Yeah, I… I guess I do…"
Silence falls upon the two as they consider their conversation. Finally, Mello approaches Matt and takes his hands. "Are you sure?"
Something in Matt's eyes resolves and he faces Mello again, his blushing slowly dies down. "Yes. I'm sure. I… I love you, Mell chip."
Mello's face contorts into exasperation, but again, he brushes it off, not wanting to ruin the moment. It is such a sweet moment.
Instead, he gives a sort of half-smile, trying not to look too happy.
"So… you never… actually- umm- answered the question," Matt says worriedly with wide, nervous eyes. Mello stares directly into Matt's eyes for a moment and then starts chuckling softly. Matt looks even more worried and speaks with a slight panic to his voice, "What- what's so funny?" To his great confusion, Mello just laughs even harder. Matt sits down abruptly and brings his knees up to his chest, hanging his head dismally. Mello's laughter quiets as he sits down beside Matt, putting an arm around his shoulder.
"No, don't go and cry on me now. I wasn't laughing because my answer was no. I just thought by now you would have known."
Matt blinks. "Known…what?" His heart nearly bursts in his chest as he thinks he understands what Mello is implying but he doesn't want to be wrong.
Mello chuckles. "I thought you would have known by now that I-" Mello inhales and needed to take a moment to really let these new feelings sink in. "...That I love you Matt," he finishes, not quite comprehending his important words at first. Suddenly, it's as if his heart skips a beat, Mello has never felt this way; it is new, different and he… he likes it. It makes him feel warm, like nothing can ever tear them apart; he wants more then anything to hold the other close, but still wanting to keep his cool. It is new, so he doesn't really know how to react. They sit quietly for what feels like an hour, but has probably only been 5 to 10 minutes. They just sit, quietly letting the time pass. Suddenly, Mello realizes how awkward this is, pulls out a chocolate bar from his jacket pocket, and unwraps it, placing the small pieces in his mouth. The sound of him biting off the pieces echos in the room, and it makes Matt chuckle.
"What?" Mello asks, curious.
Matt chuckles a bit more before responding, "It's just... so you." Matt continues to chuckle to himself, while Mello, a bit stressed and confused, takes another bite of his chocolate, looking the other way.
After another minute, Matt laughs out loud. "Why are we just sitting here?"
Mello starts. "I… don't really know…?"
Matt smiles. "Well, after I just confessed my love for someone, and they responded in kind, I'd really rather be doing something else…"
Mello's eyes widen, but a smirk tugs at the edges of his lips. He hesitates for a moment before leaning in close.
"Hey, Matt."
Matt looks up, hopeful. "What?"
"This.."
Leaning in close as his heart races, Mello places a finger under the other's chin, lifting it up to his eye level. Mello's lips meet Matt's soft ones.
Matt blushes intensely. It is sweet, literally; he can taste the chocolate on Mello's lips from before. The kiss goes on for some time before Mello pulls away, staring at Matt. Matt leans back, his heart still racing, as he tastes the sweet chocolate that marks his lips… he loves it; it reminds him of when they were kids.
The room goes silent but the silence is soon broken when Matt says awkwardly,
"Sooo…"
Mello stares. "What?" he responds, still in a daze from what took place moments ago.
"Are we..?" Matt can't quite finish his sentence; he's hoping Mello can easily predict the words Matt is having so much difficulty saying.
"Hm?"
Matt guesses that he'd been wrong..
"You're kidding right?" Matt says in disbelief.
"O-oh! Yeah, right.." Mello places his head in his hands trying to brush off the embarrassment.
The awkward silence comes creeping back again, but is soon broken.
"You must be really out of it, aren't you?" Matt smiles as Mello snaps back from his daze once more.
"I guess so." Mello smiles back, unable to control it; Matt's adorable smile always makes him light up. Another moment passes, when suddenly Matt places both his hands on the others'.
"So..? Are we?"
"Gay, yes." Mello replied jokingly, a grin on his face.
"That's not what I meant," Matt says a bit defensively.
"I know." Mello smiles, bringing a hand up to ruffle the others' hair lovingly. Matt blushes, but doesn't look away from his best-friend-slash-probably-boyfriend's beautiful, bright eyes. His heart is still racing and an uncontrollable joy is bubbling just beneath the surface. A tiny giggle threatens to escape his lips, and he tries hard to hold it back but fails. His blush deepens as Mello chuckles softly at the sound and kisses his cheek softly. Matt blushes and looks back,
happy, on how all of this turned out.
