Chapter Four
Reunion
Reaching my house, I ran inside and slammed the door loudly. I flung myself on the couch, crying loudly.
I lay there for the next few hours, the tears running down my face. All I could think about was Blaze.
After what seemed like an eternity of crying my eyes out on that couch, the doorbell rang.
Getting up, I could see the sun setting through the window. I'd been there later than I thought.
Wiping my eyes, I opened the door.
Blaze was there.
She looked distinctively uncomfortable, avoiding looking at me and rubbing her arm reflexively. "Can I come in?"
"Sure," I said blankly, stunned by her reappearance. I moved aside, allowing Blaze to enter.
I shut the door behind her, locking it securely. I turned to Blaze, wondering why she was here.
As if reading my thoughts, Blaze turned to face me. "I couldn't stop."
I tilted my head in confusion.
"Thinking about you," Blaze clarified. "I couldn't keep you out of my head."
A plethora of emotions overwhelmed me.
Blaze walked further into the house, taking a look around. The tension hung over us like a thick curtain.
"How did you find my house?" I questioned.
"I guessed," Blaze replied.
I was floored by this. "Seriously?" I asked.
Blaze nodded. "I went looking for you, and I found myself drawn to this house. I guess we do have some sort of connection."
Silence fell over us again.
Come on, Silver, say something! I scolded myself. You can't let this opportunity pass by!
"Um, do you want to see my paintings?" I asked awkwardly. "I've got a whole collection down in my basement…"
"Sure," Blaze said, looking relieved at the change in subject.
"Follow me," I said, opening the basement door and flicking on the light. Together, we started down the stairs.
"Remarkable," Blaze said, surveying the rows of paintings. "It's exactly like the city in the dream. You're quite talented, Silver."
"Thanks," I replied, giving a small smile.
I led Blaze down several rows, pointing out specific pictures and explaining their meanings. Blaze nodded and listened, quietly fascinated.
I stopped near a large painting of an enormous green-eyed fire beast. "I can't believe I actually painted that," I confided. "It scares me to death."
"This is the creature we're always running from, right?" Blaze asked, stepping closer to inspect the painting.
"Yes," I confirmed. "The living flame that brought disaster to the world. I can't remember what it's supposed to be called, though."
"Neither can I," Blaze said, looking back at me. "That's the strange thing about these dreams. I can remember events and faces clearly, but the names always remain hidden."
She moved on, going down another row. I stayed behind, still looking at the painting of the monster. What are you? I thought to myself. What secrets are you hiding?
My inner musings were distracted by Blaze's voice. "Silver? What's this one?"
I turned just in time to see Blaze pulling the tarp off the painting in the back.
Fear of the discovery of her picture driving me, I sprinted down the rows toward Blaze. "No, Blaze! Wait!"
I skidded to a halt just in time to see Blaze stare at the painting in wonder. "This is me," she said softly. "Silver…you painted me?"
I nodded, hanging my head in shame.
"This was from the dreams?" Blaze asked, turning to look at me. "This is how you saw me?"
"It's not that bad, is it?" I said hopefully.
"Bad?" Blaze said, surprised. "Silver, this looks exactly like me."
"Oh," I said quietly, swallowing hard.
"Why was it covered up?" Blaze questioned, her expression unreadable.
"Well, I, uh," I stammered, "I didn't want anyone to try to buy it from me. I wanted to keep it as long as I could."
"You made a painting of me based on my presence in your dreams, then decided to hide it so you wouldn't have to give it up?" Blaze stated slowly.
I nodded. "Please don't get mad," I said, cringing.
I was completely unprepared for what happened next.
Blaze ran at me, smothering me in a hug. "Oh, Silver," she said sadly. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."
I froze up. Blaze had never been this close to me, not even in the dream. Her perfume was even stronger than before, making me almost dizzy. I could feel her fur brush against mine, creating a pleasant tingle. Her hands were on my back, holding me tightly. I thought I was going to faint.
"You do something like this for me, and how do I repay you?" she whispered in my ear. "I get mad at you for no good reason, throwing you out for something that isn't your fault. Can you ever forgive me, Silver?"
"Uh, sure," I mumbled, trying to keep myself from falling over.
"You were right," Blaze continued. "We shouldn't try to forget about this. It'll just go on haunting us for the rest of our lives. We need to stay together if we want any chance of figuring these dreams out."
"Thanks, Blaze," I said, tentatively wrapping my own arms around her. "This means a lot to me."
"You're welcome, Silver," Blaze replied.
We stayed in that embrace for awhile, isolated in our own little world.
After several minutes, I began to fidget. "Um, Blaze? You're kind of crushing me."
"Sorry," Blaze said, loosening her grip on me. "I couldn't help it. You're so soft and warm."
That did it.
My eyes rolled back in my head and I fainted dead away in Blaze's arms.
Wasn't that sweet?
In case anyone was wondering, Silver let Blaze in because he's still got a crush on her. When your crush gets mad at you, your first instinct is usually "How can I fix this?" instead of "What a jerk!"
