Chapter 4

Three days passed before any signs of life erupted from Hermione's lax body. Harry had left and come back several times, knowing that finding the perpetrator was more important than sitting next to the sleeping form of his best friend. The Veela inside Draco would not let him let go of her hand, needing the contact to confirm his mate was still alive. The nurses had to bring a separate bed into the room so he at least would get some rest.

Hermione was in a dream state. In the distance she could feel a low throbbing pain in all of her extremities, but more closely she could feel the prominent pha-thump of her steady heartbeat. Testing out her senses she focused her thoughts on each of her limbs, making sure everything was still intact. She came to a realization that there was a warm hand cupping hers. Her aura begin to hum in happiness and contentment, something it hasn't done in a very long time. The peculiarity of the situation was not lost on Hermione, as her brain tried to work out why the sudden change in her aura. Hermione laughed to herself, even in her dream like state her body paralyzed with pain potions and sleeping draught, her brain was going at top speed.

The change of her aura caused Hermione to think back to the other times that she had been hospitalized because of the stupid accidents that they used to get into. The only time that she could recall that brought a similar sort of comfortability and happiness was back in her childhood. Her father used to take her to the park not far from their house and would push her on the swing, and she would imagine that she was a bird with nothing stopping her from soaring the world. The feeling warmed her to the tip of her toes.

It suddenly dawned on her and a bit sadness befell her, as she realized that never in all those freak accidents while chasing Voldemort, Harry and Ron never sparked that same feeling throughout her bones. With this realization Hermione also understood these feelings. Ron was with Lavender, a cute little bundle soon to arrive. Ginny and Harry married, and had two lovely bubbly children that called Hermione Aunty. She wondered then why she was feeling this way now. She contemplated that until a cool calming sensation washed over her once again.

Many hours later her eyelashes fluttered, and she became aware of a low hum vibrating from the warm hand attached to her left hand. Pain crept into her extremities, every nerve feeling like it was lit on fire. It became clear that her sleeping draught and pain potions were beginning to wear off. Her brain once again trying to piece together who was attached to the warm hand sending such warmness radiating through her hand to her heart. A groan escaped through her parched lips as pain flared in her side. Moments later a cool calming sensation washed over her as she drifted back into the land of dreams.

Back in dream land, Hermione was having the most pleasant dream. She was running and playing in the snow as the most beautiful blond haired man playfully chased her through the trees. Their laughter bouncing through the trees and echoing throughout the landscape. Hermione never felt so happy in her life. It was a curious thing though, she never got a good look at the gentlemen's face. Every time that she tried to get a closer look, the stranger would turn away or his features would become blurry.

The dream became fuzzy, and a warm wood and stone living room replaced the brilliant outdoors. The stone fireplace stood front and center, and gave such a homey feel. Hermione was snuggled in blankets on the sofa a few feet in front of the fireplace. A set of warm arms were snuggled around her, a chin rested comfortably atop her head. A sigh escaped her throat. She was so at peace. The dream became fuzzy again, though this time the coolness washed over before the next scene could unfold.

Some hours later she regained consciousness, Hermione recognized Harry's pleading voice trying to coerce the warm handed man to leave her side. A low growl rumbled through the room. Her ears pricked up at the chance to catch as much of the conversation that she could. She caught bits and pieces. Something about a crime scene, then a snippet about Draco Malfoy being the best in the field.

The odd thing was she didn't seem to hear Ron's voice. Hearing the two of them bickering was usually something she would hear when she was out for the count and confined to a bed. She listened closely again trying to make out the other voice in the room. She was unable to recognize the voice in the room, but she was plagued with familiarity. She tried but failed to piece together that the one Draco Malfoy that was brought up in conversation, was also the one holding her hand. There was absolutely no way in hell his hand was the one creating the warm sensation fluttering throughout her arm felt like it was caressing her soul.

Another low growl permeated the room, and the conversation died down. The air in the room became incredibly tense. Both pairs of eyes were drawn to Hermione, as she began to shift into a more comfortable position. It was clear to both that the pain potions and sleeping draught was beginning to wear off. Harry stepped closer to his best friend, slipping his hand between hers and the bed and giving it a reassuring squeeze.

Just then a cheery mediwitch blustered in. She muttered, "It's time for Ms. Granger's dose of potions. She should be waking up any day now, boys! Did you know that as the patient's heal, the potions become less effective. Her numbers have been steadily improving each day, and she's almost back to in the normal range."

That was exactly what the frumpy Veela needed to kick him out of his possessive vigil. Harry smirked as the mediwitch left the room. He just acquired the ammunition to light the fire under Draco to get this case solved.

Today was a good day indeed.
