Hiya guys! been a long time, decided i wanted to draw death the kid some more and got side tracked... any who, please enjoy chapter 4!
"Nigus, I need your help." Kid announced, striding into the schools infirmary. His tone was strained, with a bit of fear. Nigus turned to see Kid holding a battered young woman barely breathing, her body shaking with hypothermia.
"Just set her down on that bed Kid" Nigus quickly set to work, cleaning her external wounds while bringing up her body temperature. Kid just stared, his mind in other places. He wondered if the other teams found anything and, most of all, he wondered if Mau would be okay.
"Kid!" Startled, Kids attention was brought to Nigus who was stripping Mau of her clothing with some difficulty. "I hate to ask, but I really need your help removing this girl's shirt, her ribs need to be set and bandaged." Kid's face flushed red, but started the task at hand, making sure to not look at Mau's body. It didn't take long for Nigus's deft fingers to finish the job, replacing the wet clothing for a dry gown. Kid helped Nigus with all the tasks at hand, occasionally organizing a cabinet or drawer as he opened it. Kid looked at Mau, all tucked in and no longer shaking from the cold and decided she would be safe here.
"Nigus, Can you do me a favor? This girl… her name is Mau and she was caught trespassing. However, I do not believe she has done anything wrong besides having a strong soul wavelength, and I would ask that you look after her while I sort this out with my father." Kid looked over his shoulder as he spoke, body in the doorway ready to leave.
"I understand. I can watch over her for a bit, but please hurry back, I have other patients from the Keshin attacks to attend to." Kid nodded, thankful for her help and set off to see his father.
"Hiya Kiddo! How'd the mission go? Did you find any of the…" Death's voice trailed off, as silently watched as his son approached him. Something was off in his son's wavelength and he needed to find out what.
"Father, I need to know something… that other person you mentioned in the meeting, are they with the Keshin and Witch? Or have they actually done anything bad?" Death seemed to ignore Kid, staring right through him looking at his soul. Kid felt another familiar presence brush up against his soul and realized it was his father, no doubt noticing his soul was off. Kid waited patiently for his father to notice the chain, putting his head down as he was not used to the extreme closeness of having another's soul examine his.
"Kid, there's a chain from you soul leading to the woman you rescued. Wanna tell me how that happened Kiddo?" Death's voice was calm on the surface, but close to boiling underneath. The Thomson sisters, unnoticed by Kid, understood that this looked like a family matter and edged all the way to the door. Reluctantly the girls closed the door behind them. Wanting to know what was going on was not worth Lord Death's wrath, so they decided to seek out Maka and the others.
Kid waited to speak until he felt his two partner's souls get a good distance.
"I wish I could tell you the specifics, however all I can tell is it was some kind of spell judging by the weird language I heard when it happened."
"Anything else happen?" Kid flinched, realizing what his father was doing. He saw the whole thing on his mirror no doubt, and was trying to make Kid confess like it was some crime.
"Why don't you answer my first questions father? Has the girl done anything bad?" Kid was getting fired up. He felt that his father was in the wrong, almost killing the girl and making the world unbalanced, and Kid will not stand for anything unbalanced.
"She has killed innocent lives in her past and has attained the title 'Kasha' in parts of japan. People say she arrived cloaked in flames and killing humans whose souls who were only slightly stained with evil. There is a reason we only take those that are Keshin, and it's because people can change into something better. She has stained her hands with thousands of lives, some only committing petty crimes such as stealing bread for a hungry stomach so I'll only ask you once son, what did you do?" At the end of death's explanation, his voice changed to its original low, threatening tone. Kid was taken aback, both by death's tone and the new information on Mau. He looked at his father, hoping for any sign he was lying, but Kid knew that his Father was telling the truth. Normally calm and subdued emotions turned into anger and frustration, as Kid realized he broke the balance by helping the enemy. His Soul wavelength reflected his anger, swelling with power and changing from its original purple to a dangerous red.
"Sigh. Alright kid, calm down and just-"
"How can I be calm!? She tricked me into… I mean she just..." Kid's anger was so much that things like speaking seemed to get lost in his rage. I ruined the balance. The world is even less symmetrical now and I caused this. But I can also fix it too. Kids turned, all but ready to storm into the infirmary and fix his mistake until an all-too familiar hand stretched out from behind him, blocking his path to the exit.
"Father, move your hand. After all, I'm doing what you wanted in the first place." The hand that blocked his path now curled in, tightening around Kid like a straightjacket and pulling him next to Death.
"Okay Kiddo, I'm not upset, but I really need you to tell me every detail before that chain appeared." Kid looked at his father, something in his voice calming him as well as the fact he could not escape until he complied. Father sounds like he's anxious? No, that's not it. It's something else… If I could just get a read off his face… Kid thought about his father's mask and how he hadn't seen the face underneath since he was eight years old.
"I suppose I could… just this once." Death said to himself. With a wave of his hand, the exit had vanished, leaving him and his son in a room cut off from reality. Death set his very confused son on the floor and turned his attention towards the lone mirror, its surface dancing with otherworldly light swirling into patterns both strange and familiar.
"Father, what are you-?" He knew the answer before he finished the question. He had seen his father do this once before, after he was kidnapped and wouldn't stop crying until his father held him.
Kid was the only one who knew that his father had separated his body from his soul, probably so his body wouldn't get in the way when he fought. He watched as his father, who was nothing more than robes containing the center of Death's soul, walked into the mirror. Colors danced about the room, casting beautiful prismatic light that intensified with each passing second until death emerged from the mirror. Swirls of colors like small hands clung to his black robes, as if begging him not to go, outlining Death like he was an angel.
Death stepped fully out of the mirror, all light from the mirror ceasing as he strode toward Kid and sat down next to him, crossing his legs with some difficulty.
"ifh nofh as easfy af it ufed to be." Kid stared at Death, not understanding a single word he said. "Oh!" Death pulled his mask off, realizing it muffled his voice and pulled his hood back. Underneath was a man in his early forties, raven hair slightly ruffled clung to his head, broken only by three white stripes that circled through his hair. Golden eyes met Kid's stare, a small grin forming on Death's pale and slightly whiskered face.
"Hello Kiddo! Been awhile since I've seen you with my actual eyes."
Kid said nothing; face lost in what was no doubt awe and nostalgia, finally acknowledging his father with a curt nod.
"So, about the details of this mission, more precisely the events leading up to you bringing that girl back to life."
"Well, there's not much you didn't see already. I tried resuscitation and thought I had failed, until I looked down and she was looking at me. I dropped her, she stood up, looked at me, and then I felt an electric current run through me. That's when I noticed the chain start to form." He finished, looking away from his father's intense golden stare.
"…Well, I suppose this warrants more looking into. How's about we go visit the infirmary and ask miss Mau a few questions hmm?" Death stood up, waving his hand to bring the exit back into existence.
"Wait dad! Are you leaving the room like that?" Kid was referencing to Death's human appearance.
"Nah it'll be fine." He turned around and held a hand out to his son. "Shall we go?"
Kid looked at the hand, flashing back to those times as a child when he would hold his father's hand wherever he went.
"Yea, let's go." He reached up and grabbed his father's hand, standing up and walking in stride with Death towards the infirmary.
