Soooo I'm really really really sorry for leaving it so long, 21 days to be exact, but it was Christmas so I was kinda busy! Anyway just to address the whole Jack is running Torchwood before he should be blah de blah de blah nonsense, this fic wouldn't have worked had Yvonne been running it. I know Jack didn't take over until after Canary Warf, but this is fanfiction so I can do whatever I please mwhahaha!
What did you guys think of the Christmas Special? I wasn't too impressed, but Doctor Who is Doctor Who and I love it too much to dislike it.
Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who if I did the recent regeneration would have featured an awesome underwater glowing sensation!
"Jack! Hey, boss I've got a visitor here that wants to see you."
The Doctor was nervous to be reunited with his old companion, the one he had subsequently left on Satellite Five. The one he knew had survived. Fumbling with his hands in his pinstriped pockets, bouncing on his toes he tried to look around the coffee boy to spot the 'Captain'. When a reply came not a few moments later from behind a complicated - complicated to someone like Mickey - looking monitor the Doctor hardly resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
" Well, well I'm sure I'd like to see them too, but I am against sex at the work place -"
Someone behind him scoffed.
Chuckling Jack continued, "However I'm sure I have some time to spare" he finished with a cheeky wink to Ianto. Thinking Ianto had meant a 'different' kind of 'visitor'.
Straightening up and stretching out his back, Jack finally looked to find Ianto wasn't alone at the entrance to the Hub. Standing behind his lover was a pretty boy all dressed up, he'd always liked a guy in a suit. His gaze flashed to Ianto, eyes crawling down the navy blue blazer and trousers he wore visualizing what lay underneath. With a non too discreet cough, he let his eyes sway to the dark man standing behind the pretty boy.
"Mickey!?"
With a start Jack immediately went to fetch Rose, she'd mentioned before how long it had been since she'd seen Mickey for reasons she was still yet to tell him. Then it hit him. If that was Mickey, the man in front of him must be...
"Doctor."
Not exactly the greeting the Doctor had wanted, but it was nothing short than what was expected. Jack's stern clipped voice confirmed his earlier suspicions that Jack would still harbor some resentment towards him. Not that it was a picnic for him either, just standing this close to Jack was making his skin crawl and his head pound. Jack was an anomaly. A living temporal anomaly. Not that he didn't value Jack as a friend and a companion the sooner the TARDIS was ready to go, and he could leave, the better.
Rubbing her forehead with her hand and letting out yet another sigh Rose thought back to when she had first arrived.
Everybody seemed to be pretty happy that she had joined their team. Torchwood Three. Her new family.
Ianto seemed especially pleased since it was now her job to handle coffee and takeaway runs, leaving him to relax and take a step back from the tiring work and put up his feet.
She had been more than surprised to find how well she fitted in with everyone, being with the Doctor gave her an advantage of course. Remembering some of the things he'd told her on various journeys to who knows when and where. Every now and then she'd think back to those times. Remember the smiles on their faces when it was just the two of them on New Earth or the bets that they'd make on stupid things, like the time she'd bet she could make her royal highness say ' We are not amused'.
Reminiscing, a lone salty tear made its way down her face to brush against the curves of a small memory induced smile. It did no good to dwell on the past for too long.
Sighing once more, Rose decided that she was hardly going to get any work done in the mood she was in. Best to be productive in another way, a way that didn't include paperwork! It was the only real downside to the job. That and that creepy Owen guy chatting her up the first few days she was there, but she quickly put him in his place.
"So is it true blonde's have more fun?". Leaning against the door to her office, was the guy she'd been introduced to as Owen, he had an air of cockiness to him. A deluded sense of smugness. Hell she'd only been there five days and even she could see the woman Tosh downstairs sneaking looks his way! He reminded her of another guy who seemed to go after everyone except those who actually had true feelings for him.
"I wouldn't know, I'm not an actual blonde." With a small smile she brushed him off as best she could.
"Oh.. well we could still have fun". Not catching the hint, or just ignoring it. Owen persisted in trying to 'woo' her, offering her lines out of some cheesy movie that her mum liked to watch.
With a sigh Rose turned to the lean brunette who reminded her way too much of Adam. She even had the urge to click her fingers to see if his forehead would open up. Giggling at her inside joke, Rose addressed him.
"Look Owen. You're alright yeah? Just right now I would rather go have 'fun' with some Weevils than help you on your adventure to bed every girl in Cardiff. Lets get this straight. Downstairs there is a woman who likes you and constantly puts everybody else in front of herself and right now I'm doubting you deserve her. Trust me I know how she's feeling right now and it feels shit! So stop being the egotistical git you are and look around for once in your in small minded life and realize what you've got before its gone!"
Laughing a little she wiped away the memory and proceeded in packing up her work. Humming to herself quietly, Rose made her way across the cluttered room full of artifacts she had been researching and shut the glass door behind her. With the happy buzz she had found and the thought that maybe one day she'd actually finish the work and hand it in too Jack she headed off down the corridor to the main central hub.
"Jack."
"New face."
"Yep, new new me."
Eyebrows raised, Jack didn't question it.
The room was full of awkward tension. It seemed everybody had suddenly got very important work to get on with, though Jack could still see their pricked ears ready to listen in.
"Bloody hell Jack, where have you been? Rose told me you were dead!" He caught the Doctor flinch at the mention of Rose, but Mickey had finally had enough of being ignored. Plus he was genuinely curious as to why Rose would tell a lie like that.
"Yeah? I wonder where she'd get an idea like that". With his arms crossed across his stomach, Jack glared at the Doctor waiting for his explanation. A reason why the Doctor had left him in the year 200,100 on a satellite with no way home except for the malfunctioning vortex manipulator. One that he might add dropped him off in the mid-19th century!
"Where would who get an idea like what? Is Gwen tryin' to guess where the best hidin' places for naked hide and seek are Jack? Cause if she is she should know Ianto knows the best". A giggle called across the room. A giggle and a voice that was heavy in it's London accent. A voice that belonged to a certain blonde that was making her way out off one of the adjoining corridors about to round the computer monitors.
The Doctor's head snapped to the direction her voice and come from, because there was no denying it was her. It had been so long since she'd left and all he wanted to do was run up to the pink and yellow girl and hug her. Hug his Rose. To have her laughter fill his ears and her sweet scent of honey blossom fill his nose. Until a small voice in the back of his head reminded him that she had left, and for good reason too.
He would elicit no giggles from her. He knew that the moment he set eyes on her. Their eyes locked to one another's and a small gasp could be heard from across the way.
:D
