The baby knew something wasn't right. She fussed all the way home, and it took Edge a solid hour of pacing up and down the hallway, the little girl bouncing in his arms, for her to fall asleep.

Once he came into the lounge room, Bec set a mug of tea down in front of him.

"What are we going to do?" Edge said finally.

"What do you mean?" she sounded surprised.

"Bec", he said carefully, "We can't take care of a baby".

"We have to", she said firmly, tears threatening to fall. "We have to, she's our goddaughter! That's why we were made her godparents! In case something like this happened!"

Fly and Heath were two of the strongest people that they knew, they could get through anything. So why hadn't they gotten through this?

"I know", Edge said softly. "But Bec, I don't think we can look after Lexi. I seriously think-"

"They love Alexis more than anything in the world, Edge, and out of anyone, they picked us", Bec said seriously, her eyes glistening with tears. "We have to, for Heath and Fly. We have to at least try to look after Lexi".

"I know", he said finally. "I think I'm going to go to sleep, we've got a big day of interviews and arrangements tomorrow…"

Bec glanced around, as if unsure where to crash for the night.

"Not their room", she said, her voice barely audible. "We can't go into their room. Not yet".

He nodded in agreement. "You take the spare room, I'll take the lounge", he offered. "We can work things out later, okay? We don't need to do this now".

She nodded, setting her barely touched mug of tea down on the coffee table. "Good night Edge", she said softly.

"Good night Bec".
