Chapter 3: A Rocky Start
Ver woke up the next morning to his alarm clock ringing, still sore from sword practice the night before. He had set his clock, humorously shaped like a cuckoo, to five in the morning. Everything came back to him in a flash, and he sat there for five minutes, trying to figure out if it was a dream. Finally, he decided it wasn't, and headed to the kitchen, where his mother had gotten supplies for he and his father prepared the night before. As he picked up his set, he saw his mother's heirloom bag among the item. He remembered her having told him that despite its small size, it could hold a large amount. However, it did have a limit. He looked inside, shocked to find his father's ocarina sitting there.
I was going to decline it, he thought. I could find another. But his father had already left. Ver sighed, and took the green ocarina. He glanced at the other items he had. Many were family heirlooms from his mother's side, such as three arrows, tipped in red, blue, and gold, but no bow. There was also a shield with the ancient Hylian Royal Family's seal on it. Finally, there was a Hero's Outfit, modeled just like the old ones. It seemed to be pretty old, and there was a note on it. Ver read the note aloud, surprised at what he found.
"This tunic has been in my family so long no one can remember where it came from. Your father assumed that it might be the Green Hero's. Not to mention the book I found folded inside. You may want to read that, though it seems it was written by someone named Green. All the heroes were named Link, but they may have given themselves nicknames. I only read the foreword, but it seems that there are not only many enemies they fought, but countless legends before theirs, some of which we have no record of. I recommend that you wear this tunic when needed, as in the past all heroes wore one of these, ever since the very first hero. Your father believes, after having studied these legends, that the goddesses purposefully chose for each hero to find their own tunics, as it is a tradition for them to wear them. I'll be praying for you and your father here, but I want you to keep the same promise you made your father make. You'd better stay alive, so we can all see legends come to life once more."
Ver, who had been crying quietly, wiped his tears, and forced a small smile. He found the book in the bag, and kept looking. He found 2,000 storens, and realized his mother wouldn't let him leave without at least this much. He also found 100 green rupees. Finally, at the bottom of the bag, he found a letter addressed to Erin's mother, and a note written in his mother's writing telling him that he needed to give that to her.
Finally done with checking his inventory, he turned towards the door. Once he left, he looked back at his house.
This... This is it, he realized. Once I leave, the guards will note my absence from my activities. If I do this, I can't come back unless I manage to defeat Ganondorf. Am I really going to do this? He was shaking. He thought about what would happen if he didn't. How many people would die. How many people would never even know who to blame. The two people who would. Hyrule was counting on him; If he didn't do this, he would blame himself. Of course I am! He thought, and, forcing a smile, turned away.
"Goodbye, Mom, Dad. I'll see you again when this is over."
Ver walked through the city, grateful that so few people were out. Unfortunately, it was strange for someone his age to be walking around this early. At one point, a guard came over and questioned him.
"Son," he started, a suspicious look on his face. "Where are you going so early, and why do you have such a small bag?" Ver smiled happily, but on the inside he was panicking.
What should I do! He thought. The Four Swords heroes had a smart side, but I guess that wasn't the Green one!
"I... um..." he started, but couldn't get much further. The guard smiled at him, and chuckled.
What the heck? Ver thought, very confused at this result.
"If you want to see your girlfriend, all you have to do is say so," the guard said, winking.
Ver blushed. "That's not-!" The guard turned around.
Come on! What the heck is wrong with me! What do I do no- Wait, is that? Ver had noticed something on the guard's uniform.
"Son, what is it? You better explain, you seem suspicious..." the guard was walking towards him. Ver smiled, and pulled out a green rupee. The guard looked surprised at first, then pulled Ver around the corner.
"Are you retarded?" the guard snapped. "If anyone else had seen that, we'd both be dead!" Ver smirked, knowing he'd been right. The Sheikan symbol had been on this guard's uniform.
"You're with the LS, right? My dad's a member, and he told me about the weird mental signature stuff," Ver explained. The guard, who, upon closer look, only seemed about twenty- four, crossed his arms.
"Yeah, so?" he asked, obviously annoyed at the kid who'd nearly cost him his life.
"Well, my dad checked, and mine matches that of the Green Hero of the Four Sword," Ver continued. "Not only that, but after extensively researching my mother's family line, he learned that I'm descended from him. I'm on a quest to find the other four heroes and the princess of this age so we can restore prosperity to Hyrule. In fact, I know where the princess is now, and I was just heading over there." The guard looked shocked, then pleased.
"Thank Din! I was worried we'd never see an end to this tyranny!" he exclaimed. Ver pondered this.
"I'm a bit confused... I don't honestly see what the Council is doing wrong," he said. The guard stared at him.
"Your father never told you?" he asked, surprised. "I guess that makes sense, if he wanted to protect you. Gren, the leader of the Council, is actually slowly sucking the light out of everything he can in order to make an evil version of the Triforce."
"Wait," Ver interrupted. "So, a dark version?" The guard looked at him funnily.
"No," he said. "An evil version. The Triforce isn't light or dark. It's like a perfect mix of both. Darkness isn't evil, and I highly recommend that you remember that. One of the first heroes was born from the Dark World, and is often called the Hero's Shadow." Ver, though he'd heard it before, was fairly surprised. He'd always thought that it was impossible for that to happen.
"Anyway," said the guard, "I'll escort you to your friend's house to avoid suspicion."
The two headed to Erin's house, but neither noticed the fact that it was getting darker when it should have been getting lighter.
SoS: Wait... I made a cliffhanger! Sorry, but it's actually pretty fun!
Blue: And why the hell is that?
Vio: Obviously because she know what happens next, and anyone reading this doesn't.
SoS: While that would be my reason, it's actually not true. I have no idea what happens next; I'm writing each chapter just after I upload the one before so I can stay on this daily update roll.
All: *sweatdrop*
Red: It's okay, SoS. You doing well now!
SoS: Thanks Red, but I don't need compliments. It's pretty hard to get me to feel bad for myself. Because I know that there's probably people reading, and enjoying, this. Either way, it's fun to put stuff like this into words.
Green: Exactly.
SoS: By the way, Green, my sister thinks you have no personality.
Green: *flustered* Wait what! I have personality! I'm um... aggressive! And... err... a leader! And...
Shadow: Review please! Wait, why am I the only one who's gotta be so OOC?
Vio: Because you hadn't said anything yet, and SoS didn't want to leave you out.
SoS: Vio... *withering look* I'm pretty sure I was supposed to say that.
Vio: Then you shouldn't have written that I said it.
SoS: Meh, it was funny.
Green: *still muttering about having personality*
SoS: I love criticism, compliments are great, flames are illogical, but I won't accept a fight.
Green: Review and tell the world my personality!
