Hey guys it's the Peytonator back with another chapter. A heavily, heavily delayed chapter. I had finals, then spring break, then the mood just never was right to finish this chapter. Bah, I got it done at last, and I hope you like it at least. Until next time, take care!
Chapter 4: Unexpected Discoveries
Naruto flopped down onto the cool grass, his muscles aching severely. Next to him, Eiji lay flat on his face, groaning. Neither of them had been able to land a single hit on Hinata, and they had each sparred against her several times.
"How…How did you get so fast? You've got to be the strongest kid in the whole village!" Naruto praised as he tried to catch his breath.
"Yeah, at this rate you'll become Hokage years before Naruto is even close!" Eiji agreed, smirking at the sour face Naruto shot at him.
"T-that's not true. I'm not very good at all…Thank you though," Hinata said, blushing slightly. Rei raised his eyebrows at that comment, but chose to move past it for now.
"Don't sell yourself short Hinata-sama. Your movements are incredibly fluid, your reaction time is impeccable, and while I am no expert on the Hyuga fighting style, it looked to me that it was close to flawless." He told her, noting the surprise in her eyes.
"R-really? Surely it wasn't perfect," she said, doubt evident in her voice. Rei paused for a moment before continuing.
"Hinata, perfection is impossible to achieve, even for the greatest master. Strive to be the best you can be and not for perfection, otherwise you'll never be satisfied. If you would like some tips for improvement, however, I noticed that you always hesitate just a moment before you return any attacks," he noted, tapping his chin thoughtfully. Hinata had heard that before from her father, but hearing it along with her good qualities softened the blow.
"Takamatsu-san, w-what do you think I should do? Father has often told me the same, but not how to overcome it."
"Please, just call me Rei. Now, am I correct to assume that you hesitate because you don't want to hurt the person you're sparring?" he questioned, receiving a nod. "Well, think of it this way. When you become a kunoichi, you won't be allowed to pull your punches. Your life and those of your teammates may rest on your ability to take advantage of the smallest openings. Furthermore, the people you are sparring against won't go up against any opponents that will hesitate, meaning they are more likely to be injured or killed on a mission. Basically, you don't do anyone any favors by trying to avoid injuring them. Better to receive a few bruises now than lose your life later."
"I…I see. Thank you very much Taka - um, I mean Rei-san," Hinata said with a bow. Rei returned it with a smile.
"My pleasure Hinata-sama. Now you two," he said, turning to face his two students. "I think that's enough for today. We'll meet her tomorrow at the same time to continue. You're free to go enjoy your day; I have some things I need to look into," Rei told them.
"Alright Dad, I'll see you at home later."
"See ya Rei-sensei." With a small wave, Rei left the training ground.
"Well Naruto, what do you say we get some lunch?" Eiji asked as he stood, brushing the dirt off his shorts.
"Sounds good to me! Hey Hinata, you want to come with us?" the blonde asked cheerfully as he jumped to his feet. Hinata, lost in thought, jumped in mild surprise.
"O-oh I, um, I w-would like to, if I wouldn't be bothersome."
"Why would you be a bother? Heck, you might even make Naruto show some class as he eats," Eiji jabbed, stretching his legs. Naruto narrowed his eyes at his friend, balling his fists and leaning in close.
"You're one to talk, I wasn't the one who spilled broth all over myself trying to slurp noodles as fast as I could!" Eiji's eyes went wide, before he leaned in as well, their foreheads touching as they glared at each other.
"What?! At least I took the time to chew my food before swallowing!"
"Why you - that's it! I'm gonna..." both boys stopped when they heard a small voice. Turning towards Hinata, they found her staring very intently at the ground.
"P-please don't fight. If my coming along will cause problems, then you two can just go without me," she said quietly. The other two rubbed the back of their necks abashedly.
"Hey of course we want you to come along. We weren't really fighting anyway," the blonde said.
"Yeah don't worry Hinata. Naruto just has this crazy idea that he's better than me," Eiji joked before Naruto elbowed him. "Ah uh, I mean we just both hate to lose. It's nothing to worry about, really," he continued, rubbing his sore ribs. Hinata eyed the two boys carefully, before slowly nodding her head.
"A-alright, if you're sure," she replied, moving to catch up with her new friends.
"Alright you two, what's the best sushi place in Konoha?" Eiji asked as the trio headed back into town, head filled with images of eel and spicy crab. To his dismay he received two negatives.
"Sorry, m-most of my meals are prepared back at the Hyuga compound. I don't know much about the restaurants available..."
"I know of some places but I've never eaten at them. They always refuse to serve me or just plain kick me out," Naruto replied offhandedly. The other two looked at him in surprise.
"They won't serve you? Why's that? Did you upset the owners or something?" Eiji asked, concerned. The blonde shook his head.
"Naw it was always my first time to those places," the blonde said, shrugging. Eiji and Hinata shared a curious look.
"Well, if they won't serve you, then I'll just go in and order for you. They don't know me," Eiji said, grinning to cheer up his friend. Naruto smiled slightly and nodded.
"Alright, lead the way!"

In the council chambers, its members were abuzz with anticipation. For the Hokage to call an unscheduled meeting was unusual, but no cause for concern. Instead it was Jiraiya's presence that had them all on edge, and his resigned look only served to increase their anxiety. Hiruzen calmly watched the stragglers file into the room, taking small puffs of his pipe and blowing lazy smoke rings into the air. Jiraiya sat wearily on the floor, resting one cheek in his hand as he took note of the clan leaders as they entered.
'Let's see how many I recognize, seeing as I'll be their boss in a couple years...Eh, still weird to think about.'
To his somewhat bittersweet pleasure, he found that he recognized all of the clan heads. The civilian council was unknown to him, but he hadn't expected to. He warily eyed Danzo as the one-eyed man hobbled slowly to his seat. Hiruzen cleared his throat, gaining the attention of the room.
"Well I think that's everyone then. Now, before we begin, are there any matters that would be brought to my attention?" The third asked, receiving only silence. "Very well. From the looks on your faces, it is clear you are curious as to the rather sudden nature of this meeting. Word has no doubt spread that yesterday. I entertained a guest from the Land of Iron." Most members of the council nodded, having heard such rumors passed down from the ninja who guard the gates. Hiruzen didn't miss the smug look on Fugaku's face, clearly enjoying the fact he was privy to something the others were clueless about. Akimichi Choza spoke, worry present on the large man's face.
"Has something happened with the samurai? Without their presence, the balance of power could shift dramatically."
"Something has happened with the samurai, in fact. But," he began to clarify, noticing the paling faces of some of the council, "It's nothing catastrophic. General Mifune has sent a request to ally with Konoha." As expected, the council erupted, bombarding the elderly leader with questions. "Let's keep it orderly - concerns or questions raised one at a time," he said, holding up one hand to silence the crowd. To the surprise of the council, it was Nara Shikaku who spoke first, the news having roused the scarred man from the bored state he was usually seen in.
"Why now? I know we don't have spies in the north, so we don't know what brings this about. For all we know this could be a set-up of some kind," he questioned, getting a nod of agreement from Hyuga Hiashi.
"An excellent point. With all due respect, Hokage-sama, I don't think I need to remind you what happened last time we were visited by a foreign diplomat," the stoic leader of the Hyuga commented.
"Indeed you do not need to remind me Hiashi, but do you really think that the samurai would stoop so low? They are not the Hidden Cloud village, why would they have interest in the Byakugan?" Hiruzen replied. The Hyuga leader grimaced, knowing the reputation of the samurai for upholding its strict set of morals.
"No, I do not. That doesn't rule out the possibility of a trap. With how sudden this is, can we be certain it is really the samurai reaching out to us and not some imposters?" The third nodded.
"I have already had our top experts compare the missive we received from Mifune many years ago, when he announced to all the villages he was now leading the samurai. Despite the age, the handwriting is identical. I have also met with his ambassador, and Takamatsu-san has displayed every quality the samurai are known for. My instincts tell me this is the real thing," the old man said.
"Well I'm in favor of this alliance," Fugaku intoned, gaining the attention of the room. "Even if this is a set-up, we can just approach it cautiously. However, the potential benefits of such an agreement far outweigh the risks in my mind," the Uchiha said, rubbing his chin. The Hokage was pleased to see the civilian council start to sway with the approval of the villages most prominent clan. Aburame Shibi spoke next, his dark glasses flashing in the light.
"A logical assessment, Uchiha-san. Our current position as the strongest village allows us room to take some risks with the possibility of minimal injury. However, the possible advantages should this prove true would make our position concrete, dissuading any ideas of assaulting the village that might exist elsewhere," he added. The Nara head listened to the arguments, head bowed in thought. Inuzuka Tsume seemed torn as well. With the Inuzukas' pack focus, he could understand the difficult decision to bring a stranger into the "pack," even one that could potentially strengthen it.
"Alright, it seems the major points have been made. The council will now vote on this issue. All in favor?" The third raised his hand, counting the hands raised with him. 'Let's see. The Uchiha, most of the civlians, the Aburame...' Shikaku thought for a moment longer before raising his hand. Only a second passed before the Yamanaka and Akimichi heads complied as well. Danzo also raised his hand in agreement, not that Hiruzen was surprised. The opportunity to extend his influence was too great for the crippled man to ignore. Hiashi abstained, while Tsume continued to look troubled, but ultimately kept her hand down.
"The treaty is approved by the majority. I will meet with Takamatsu-san to finalize everything. Now for the second reason I have called this meeting. Now, it may not be apparent to you, but I'm quite old," the third said wryly, receiving a few chuckles. "I've decided it's time for me to name the Fifth Hokage," he said, regaining the full focus of the council. Hiruzen missed Danzo suddenly stiffen, but it didn't escape the notice of the toad sage.
"This is a little sudden, eh Hiruzen? You haven't claimed an interest in a successor since Minato died why after all these years?" the bandaged man asked.
"It's time for the next generation to take over and continue to kindle the spirit of fire in our youth. For that reason, I see no one better than Jiraiya to take the hat from me." A dull rumble filled the hall as the council members exchanged words. Danzo narrowed his good eye at his longtime ally.
"Do you really think that wise? I won't argue that he is a strong fighter, and a good symbol of Konoha's strength, but I feel he lacks the right qualities to be Hokage." Jiraiya bristled at Danzo's veiled insults. Sure, he didn't really want the job in the first place, but he wasn't going to take shit from Danzo of all people.
"Oi Danzo, if you've got something to say, then just come out and say it." The two locked eyes.
"Very well. I don't think you have the necessary leadership qualities it takes to run a village. Beyond your more obvious personality flaws and perverted attitude, you need to be willing to do anything to help the village prosper."
"I don't have the necessary leadership qualities? Do I need to remind you how many ninja I've trained that have gone on to be renowned for their strength?"
"I'm very aware of your students Jiraiya. I'm also aware of how many are currently living," Danzo replied, the smallest of smirks appearing on his face. Jiraiya clenched his fists in anger, but didn't take the bait.
"Your concerns are noted. However, I love this village and I'll make it succeed without resorting to any unsavory methods my sources may have informed me about," the Sannin hinted, receiving a glare in return. Hiruzen spoke, halting any comeback the retired shinobi was planning.
"Danzo, you bring up these faults of my student, who is by no means perfect," Sarutobi said, drawing a scowl from the sage, "But I can think of no one better to lead this village. Do you have someone in mind?" Danzo's eye widened slightly at being put on the spot, but he composed himself quickly.
"Yes. Frankly, I feel that I would do a better job leading this village to greatness." A new rumbling emerged in the council hall with that statement. The civilian council knew only that Danzo was a great leader and a hero in the second war, but the clan heads looked apprehensive. Danzo's reputation for doing anything to get ahead was well known among them, and while they knew he had Konoha's interests in mind, they didn't like the means he used to achieve them. Danzo surveyed the room and noticed the lack of support.
"It seems that you may have trouble gaining the Jonin support necessary my old friend," Hiruzen said gently. Danzo grimaced, gripping his cane tightly.
"Fine, if you want to make your student the Fifth, it seems that he has the support. I will continue to support Konoha in my own way, as I have always done," he replied curtly, before standing and limping out of the room.
The toad summoner watched as the doors swung shut, thinking hard. 'He's going to be trouble, I can already tell that much. I'm going to have to dig up what I can on Danzo while I'm showing Shisui around, see if I can find something to curtail that ambition of his.'
Hiruzen stared sadly at the seat that had occupied his longtime friend, before continuing to address the council. "Jiraiya will transition to my seat in three years' time, once I have made the appropriate accommodations and we have received the blessing of the Daimyo. With that, this meeting is adjourned. I'll trust you to keep this treaty amongst yourselves for the time being. We don't want any other village trying to sabotage us after all." The council all bowed to their leader.
"Hai, Hokage-sama."

"Here it is guys: Hikari's Sushi Bar . I guess this place has been named the best sushi place in Konoha for a few years now. To be honest, I'm excited to finally try some of it," Naruto told his friends as they arrived in front of a rather well-tended building. Naruto noticed that there were fish painted on the side to look like they were fighting for the right to be served from this particular restaurant.
"Wow Naruto, this place looks pretty pricey. Good thing the Hokage agreed to pay all our costs for a few weeks!" Eiji responded, a wry grin appearing on his face as he turned to the blonde. Naruto grinned back mischievously.
"Alright, Hinata and I will go in and order. I'll just get you whatever I get. I think you'll like my choices," Eiji said, getting a nod from Naruto. Entering the sushi bar, Eiji and Hinata immediately noticed the warm atmosphere. The restaurant was well-lit, and a few customers sat around enjoying their lunches and exchanging light conversation. A small bald man worked behind the counter, chopping up fish with incredible dexterity. He smiled as they approached, continuing to prepare food without even looking.
"Ah welcome to Hikari's Sushi Bar ! I haven't seen you two here before, not that I mind new customers! Haha!" the man who they guessed was Hikari chuckled amiably before he looked again and noticed Hinata's eyes and unmarked forehead. "Oh! Miss Hyuga, I'm so sorry. I didn't notice it was you please forgive my informality," he smiled nervously.
"O-oh, don't worry, its fine," Hinata stumbled. She never felt ready for the respect she received out in the village, even though she had learned long ago that it was proper and expected.
"Thank you for your kindness Hyuga-sama, I won't forget it. Now then, what can I get you two?"
"I would like to order two dragon rolls and some eel sashimi, to take home."
"U-um, I'm not a fan of seafood , sorry. Do you have any other choices?" Hikari rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"Well I do make a pretty good red bean soup . It's not really on the menu, but for the upcoming heir to the Hyuga clan, I think I can make an exception," he said, nodding slowly. Hinata's eyes lit up.
"O-oh! Red bean soup is one of my favorite dishes! I'll order that please." Hikari smiled.
"Coming right up you two."
While Hikari began to prepare their order, Hinata and Eiji took in the relaxing atmosphere. They waited about 10 minutes before Hikari called them over for their order. After paying, the duo waved goodbye to the chef. Emerging into the sunlight, the two spotted Naruto sitting on the ground right next to the restaurant. The blonde waved as they approached.
"About time you guys got here. I thought I was going to starve to death!" Eiji rolled his eyes at his friend's exaggeration, but handed him his bento box.
"Do you guys want to go to the park to eat?" Eiji suggested. Naruto shook his head.
"No way, I've waited long enough. Let's just eat right here!" Lacking utensils, the boys opted to eat their sushi with their hands, while Hinata politely sipped her soup out of its container. Eiji eyed his friend as he chewed, seeing the delight on his face.
"Well? What do you guys think?" he asked.
"The chef wasn't lying when he said this soup was delicious," Hinata said, savoring the sweet flavor.
Naruto had trouble swallowing all the food he had shoveled into his mouth before he could answer. "Well, it's no Ichiraku ramen, but it's pretty good. It's nice to have something different too," he answered nonchalantly. Eiji smiled wide.
"That's the spirit Naruto! Besides we don't want you getting fat on a ramen only diet!" he joked. The trio laughed, enjoying each other's company as they ate. They heard the door to the restaurant open, and the three turned to see Hikari exit.
" Ah, so I did hear you out here laughing. I thought I'd bring you guys a treat, on the…house," Hikari trailed off upon spotting Naruto, but it went unnoticed by all but the blonde, who had a sinking feeling upon seeing the man.
"That's really nice of you Hikari-san. T-thank you very much," Hinata told the man, giving him a small smile. Hikari stared for a moment before striding over and taking the bento out of Naruto's hands, shocking Eiji and Hinata.
"Hey! What are you doing Hikari-san? That's our food! We payed for it," Eiji asked indignantly. The sushi chef shook his head angrily.
"No, you paid for it. You didn't say some of it was for...for him!" he said sternly, pointing at Naruto, who glared back at the man.
"What do you mean? What did he do to you?" Hinata asked, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes at this unexpected hatred.
"He…he…it doesn't matter what he did, I have the right to refuse service to whomever I choose," the man sweated, trying to avoid the topic.
"Fine, but we paid for it, so give us our money back," Eiji yelled back angrily. Hikari reached into his apron and pulled out a handful of money, throwing it at their feet.
"Take it and leave. Never come back to my restaurant." Eiji continued to glare, but eventually bent over to pick up the scattered Ryo. Hikari looked at a sobbing Hinata.
"If your father knew of this, he'd be ashamed. I expected better of the Hyuga heiress. You'd do well to avoid him. Otherwise he'll ruin any chance you have at being great," he said scornfully, before turning on his heel and heading back towards his restaurant. Hinata stared at the retreating man, tears streaming down her face and fists clenched tightly.
"You'll see…N-Naruto-kun is going to be Hokage!" the usually shy girl said, only loud enough for the two next to her to hear.
"Yeah, then you'll be begging for him to come eat here!" Eiji yelled as the door slammed shut. The two spun towards Naruto.
"Naruto, why'd you let him talk to you like that? Naruto? Hello?" Eiji waved his hand in the blondes face. Naruto stared at the two in wonder for a moment longer before smiling a genuine smile.
"Naruto? Why are you smiling? That guy just completely lost it for no reason!" Eiji asked, confused.
"That's fine; I'm used to that by now. I've just…never really had anybody stick up for me before, that's all. Hinata," Naruto looked at the raven haired girl, who blushed slightly. "Did you really mean what you said? Do you really think I can become Hokage?" Hinata shuffled nervously for a moment.
"I think you can Naruto-kun, " she finally replied, blushing further as Naruto's grin grew even larger. Eiji gave him a thumbs up.
"Yeah, and we'll help you. No more messing around guys. It's time to show these people who their new heroes are!" Eiji extended his fist, and the other two put theirs in as well, rapping knuckles together. Naruto jumped into the air excitedly.
"Yatah! Let's get started!"

In Konoha's public library, Rei was hard at work researching more about his new home. Books and folders were scattered around him as he searched. He read through one folder before reading something that piqued his interest. Rummaging through the piles to find a book on recent village history, flipping through until he found what he was looking for. Comparing the two sources of information, Rei nodded.
"Of course…I must alert Mifune-dono that we have found another one. Monitoring his safety will be an utmost concern." Leaving so quickly that he didn't even bother to put away his books, the book on village history lay open next to one listing all the births from seven years ago. Two important dates coincided.
Kyuubi attack on Konoha, Kyuubi seemingly killed by the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato.
Born, one Uzumaki Naruto. Both on October 10th.
