Jerky Jacky
"Why are you such a Jerk?" Kim yelled at him holding back tears clutching tightly at her right arm. She winced, glaring at the man in front of her. It was his fault she had hit the barbed wire, it was his fault she was bleeding, he made her trip on the mud. Yet somehow, she was getting the grief.
"Ask your boyfriend, Jerry. " Jack replied angrily, carefully pulling her injured arm towards himself. She quickly pulled it back.
" Why would I be dating jerry?" She yelled, ignoring the rain that made jack harder to see.
"Give me your arm, Crawford." He demanded and held out his hand expectantly.
"No! Why would I? How do i know your not going to break it in half for fun?" She growled, watching rain drops fall from jacks hair and ignoring the drowning feeling in her boots.
Jack didn't move, his hand was still extended waiting for Kim to place her injury there.
With a glare and a defiant scowl, she obeyed. She carefully placed her bleeding arm on his waiting hand.
She expected him to smirk, or chuckle, or call her clumsy at the very least but he just gave a tired sigh.
He knew it was his fault she was injured, well, not really. Her disobedience was her downfall, quite literally. Every order he issued, she did the opposite. His left was her right while his right was her wrong. So him yelling "stop!" or "watch out!" was ignored as she ran in the heavy rain, only to slip in the mud and scrape against the barbed wire. He only blamed himself because he knew that she wouldn't listen, he should have yelled, "keep running!". He wasn't angry at her, he was angry at himself.
" I'm sorry this happened to you." He admitted, beginning to drag her towards the infirmary.
"Why?" Kim replied, surprised. How long? She wondered, how long until he snapped back into the stone wall she is forced to associate with.
Jack was going to answer her nicely, honestly, but when he opened his mouth to speak, there were venom in his words.
"Because Jerry would kill me if his pretty new girlfriend got hurt." He sneered, accidentally tugging her arm a bit too harshly.
"Ow!" She hissed.
He didn't know what he had against Kim, other then her disobedience.
"Me? Dating Jerry?" Kim questioned, repulsed by the idea, she pulls her arm away and stomped herself towards the infirmary. She ignored the fact that he technically just called her pretty. "Why would i ever do that?"
" I dont know, You tell me." Jack replied sharply, though somewhat curiously as he followed behind.
"I am not dating jerry!" She yelled defensively. "Thats nasty!"
"Sure looked like it." Jack yelled unconvinced though a part of him wanted to laugh at her distaste. Jerry isn't so bad.
" Why are you so interested anyway?" Kim questioned, stopping outside the wooden door, ignoring the drying blood on her arm and the tingling feeling that Jack's hand had left behind. She bitterly remembered his reaction when she told him that everybody calls her Kim- not Kimberly. " I thought you don't care about my life's story."
"I don't," He lied quickly, because the truth was that he was a bit curious. " Its Jerry's life I'm interested in."
"Then, shouldn't you ask him?"
"Why would he tell me?"
"Why would I?" She challenged.
Jack rolled his eyes and opened the door to the infirmary without a response.
"Dr. Viet? Its Jack." Jack called, closing the wooden door behind the beautiful southern bell.
Kim watched a thinning blond stumble into the room, pushing his thick black glasses up the bridge of his nose.
" Hello sir!" The doctor saluted nervously, his back so strait, he might have been leaning backwards. "At your service, Sir."
" She fell into the barbed wire." Jack explained nodding his head in the direction of the patient.
She shot jack a glare as the doctor sat her down on the cot behind the door.
She flinches as begins to clean the cuts with alcohol.
" How's your arm?" Jack asked glancing at it a few minutes later.
She rolls her eyes, unimpressed.
"Now you care."
"Not really." Jack responds, turning around and walking off. The wooden door slamming behind him.
Kim remained sitting on the cot, surprise written clearly on her face as Dr. Viet lets out a small chuckle.
"So stop pretending!" She yelles after him.
But he was already gone.
At least that was what she thought.
She groaned. It's only her first day here and Jack is literally killing her with his jerkiness
Why is he so annoying?
Jack is a jerk. Plain and simple.
Jerky-jacky
She giggled to herself slightly.
She knew the name was immature but it made her feel just a bit better anyway.
Jack who had really been waiting outside the door, heard her giggle and almost -almost- smiled at how melodious and cute the sound was.
He waited outside until he heard the dr.'s verdict. He said she should leave her arm wrapped up but it shouldn't enable her from any activities, it was just a couple of scratches after all.
The chief pushed open the door once more and glared at the patient.
"I would be at the field before I get there!" Jack threatened.
"Then you better walk slow." Kim glared back as he walked back out.
She sighed, shaking off the pain in her arm and standing from the cot. She thanked the doctor once more before sluggishly making her way to the training field.
The soldiers were running back and forth, it wasn't a long distance but enough to make Kim groan once more.
Jack turns in her direction, letting out a frustrated breath.
"Its been twenty minutes Kimberly, where have you been?"
"Does it really matter?" She questioned, walking up to him, challenging him, " Either way im late for training."
"Late for training?" He laughed cruelly. " you practically ditched the whole thing. This isnt school Kimberly, you cant just make up the notes. This is the army. Everything you learn here comes into play because, incase you haven't noticed all the guns lined up against the buildings-" he points to the the ammunition building on his left before pointing to the ones on his right. " this is a combat unit Crawford."
Shes silent for only a moment before straitening her back and lifting her chin, defiantly ignoring the fact that jack was towering over her.
"All your doing now is running, wake me up when you plan to teach me to shoot a weapon."
He chuckles again but she doesn't backdown.
"Okay Crawford, i tried." Jack chuckles once more before blowing his whistle and calling all the men to attention, lining them up and counting them.
" Men, Miss Crawford here wishes to tell you the importance of shooting a gun over the importance of physical speed and stamina."
A few of the men sigh as she shoots a glare at her commander.
"No, she doesn't."
"Ten laps says you do." He smiles coyly towards her.
She surveys the track around her.
Was it worth it?
She followed the track up the incline of the hill.
Turning to face her commanding officer she hisses.
"I really dont like you." She admits.
He chuckles, along with some of the other soldiers in his command but she remains stone faced until its silent.
"You dont think running is important?" Jack challenges.
"In a war?" I raise an eyebrow. "If i could pick an advantage in a war, no it wouldn't be speed."
" but shooting a gun is more important?" He circles her now, like an animal preparing to attack its pray. She's slouching slightly but continues anyway.
"I would say so, yes."
"Why?"
"Its a war, Jack. Guns, bombs and a lot of death. Its kill, or be killed. Its war." She straitens her back and declares with conviction. "Heck of a lot of help running will do when all the other team cares about is piercing my heart."
Jack pauses for a minute, but is confident smirk doesn't falter.
"Kill or be killed?" He muses, Kim nods.
"Hm." Is all he says and continues walking around her.
Its silent for a moment, almost making the blond believe that she had won this battle, that jack really had no response. She was wrong.
"See, gentleman." He begins with a frown, "many of you came in this morning on the same shift as kimberly-"
"Kim," she corrects, he ignores her.
"Crawford, i hope that she is alone in her simple minded thinking."
"Hey! I-"
" Kill or be killed!" Jack yells. " if this is your mentality, you have already lost the war! If this is your mentality, you should never be trusted with a weapon. Ounce you become like they enemy-" he begins to whisper, "the war is lost."
"Your saying i should let them kill me." I question in confusion.
"Im saying, that you never wish for someones death. Nobody wants to die in war, and only pure evil aims to kill."
"What good would running do in a war but prove to the enemy that i am a coward!" She balls her first and chekkenges him. Hes circling her, daring her to continue. " i will not run away from the battle."
He stops abruptly, his lips only inches from her ear.
"And thats how you'll die then." He declares, quietly, though all the soldiers in Jack's command could still hear. " chasing honor, glory, trying ti declare your self a myrter or a hero. Yet at the end of the day, you are, just a coward."
Kim takes a deep breath trying to calm herself.
In and out. She tells herself. In and out.
The grinds her teeth, her face turns red with a mix of both anger and embarrassment.
She quickly turns on her heels and with all of the stength that she could muster, She shoved him away from her. He stumbles back in suprize.
" you son of a-" she begins to yell but he covers her mouth with his hand harshly.
"Watch it Crawford, your one word away from a court marshal." He warns.
She shoves his hand away from her.
" Dont touch me." She hisses. Jack rolls his eyes and turns towards the others soldiers in jacks group who were watching the seen unfold.
" running!" Jack begins. " you run to get your weapon in time. You run to find cover, you run into battle and you run out of it. You run to dodge a bullet and run to save another. If you dont want to run because you afraid to look cowardly," he gestures towards kim who folds her arms in defaiance. "Your suicidel. You have a death wish. And if your motto is, 'kill or be killed' your homocidel."
"I'm not suicidal or homocydle!" she defended angrily.
"Well, you could've fooled me." Jack mummbles before begining to circle her again. "So many things could go wrong with a gun,but running is yours. What do you do Kimberly, if your gun is jammed? If your out of buttlets or if the weapon is out of reach."
He wants me to say 'you run' She knew, but she counters his question.
"What do you do if you get shot in then leg?" He stands a foot above her but she locks eyes with him.
"Well if you had run in training, maybe the buttet woukdnt have hit you in the first place."
They are breathing hard, as if they had been yelling ate eahother. Thier faces so close that jack almost leaned in to kiss her. Almost.
He take a step back and points to the track.
"So get on the dang field, Crawford!" Jack yelled and Kim blinked in shock for a moment before she growled but reluctantly did what he demanded.
"Wow, she actually listened!" Jack commented with fake amazement. Soldiers in the group tried to hide Their laughter while Kim tried to hide her flustered- and angered- face. She took a deep breath to stop herself from kicking jack in the stomach- she thought that that aught to quiet him.
"Everyone do the basics, I think I got to work with Kimberly today." Jack commanded before he thought about it. True, he made a promise to himself that he would train Kim hard, keep her safe-but to have one on one training...
Jack nodded agreeing with himself and walked over to her.
This is the military, Kim's gotta learn how to have respect and discipline.
"Kim." She spoke up sheepishly.
"huh?" Jack raised an eyebrow.
"You said Kimberly, my name is kim." she corrected, rolling her eyes.
"According to your dog tag, your birth certificate and who ever named you, its Kimberly." he said walking up to her, putting his face-ounce again- unnecessarily close to hers an picking up her dog tag.
Kim held her breath, unprepared for the close proximity.
" and if your killed, it'll say Kimberly on the gravestone. Right under the numbers 6675." he told her harshly, droping the dog tag and taking a step back.
"Run!" he commended the other soldiers who still stood around in suprise.
"Sir. Yes. Sir!" the yelled and began running laps as Kim tried to follow, still stunned by what Jack had just said. She didn't plan to die.
"Not you." Jack said, grabbing her shoulder, she pulls herself out of his grasp. "I got something else planned for you."

"I just don't get what his problem is!" Kim vented to Jerry, sitting on a log facing the lake.
"I know." Jerry began trying to end the Jack conversation. "Kim, you'll never guess who came-"
"And he thinks we are secretly dating!" Kim went on.
"Still." Jerry sighed. "Kim, Ed-"
"I mean, me and you? Eww, heck no!"
"Thanks." Jerry rolls his eyes, Kim ignores him and continues.
"And then every time I tell him somthin', anything, he thinks I'm trying to tell him my life story!" She continued exaggerated.
"I give up." Jerry sighed, guessing his news had to wait. Hes lays down on the grass by her feet. She abruptly stands and begins to pace between him and the log.
" He claims he was taking it easy on me today, because I hurt my arm! Thanks for the favor jack but That was NOT easy! " she continued. He made her run, he made her lift, he made her climb and watched her fall.
"Kim." Jerry sighs, not longer trying to get her attention, but trying to her calm down.
"Seriously! If he calls me Kimberly one more time, I'm going to loose it!" She growled angrily, dropping angrily beside him. Jerry sits up with a sigh.
"Kim, I think you already have." Jerry admits, put a hand on her shoulder. "Calm down."
Kim took a couple of deep breaths.
"Better?" Jerry offered.
She nodded half heartedly.
"I just don't get why I'm his target, all I did was call out a number." she sighed, taking a seat on the grass.
"Kim, I was never the smart one, but your making me look like a genius." He chuckles, taking a price of gum from his pocket, offering her some. Which she accepted.
"Martinez, figured it out?" she laughed not believing.
He rolled his eyes.
"Don't you get it Kim?"
"apparently not."
"Jack's not out to get you because of Taylor's number." He told her, chuckling while subconciecly holdin his necklace.
"Why else would he push me so hard?"
"Because your a GIRL." He told her as if it were obvious.
She punches his shoulder. Hard.
"Ouch!"
"You sexist pig!" she prepared to punch him again.
"Not like that!" he defended, catching her hand.
"Like what?" She pulls her arm out of his grasp.
"Kim, if a girl gets captured, it is way worse then if a boy is." Jerry's voice darkens, the mood shifting suddenly.
"How so?" Kim responded confused, beginning to pull grass from the ground.
"Kim, boys will most likely be torchered. Thier isnt so much emotional damage to be in prison, you can recover. But think of Taylor, even if you never met her. She's strong, Smart, and beautiful, but I bet you, knowing her, she wants to die right now- of she isn't already... Dead." he told the blond with difficulty. She grabbed his hand comfortingly.
"But, if she's so smart, wouldn't she realize that as long as she's alive, the bigger chance she"ll have to see you again?"
"Yeah, but is it worth it?" His voice cracks. She turns side ways to face him, but he still faces forward.
"What does that mean?" She puts her hand on is shoulder. "Of course your worth it."
He turns to face her.
"No, Kim, you're not listening." He told her, putting bother his hands on her shoulders and locking their gaze, willing her to understand. " She is beautiful. Imagen what they probably did to her."
She understood, she nods, he meant rape.
He takes her nod as permission to continue.
"Kim, thats a memory that doesn't go away. She has to live with that forever. Even when she comes back and we get married- if she still wants too, that memory will always, always, haunt her." Tears streamed down his face.
"loosing her virgenity, poor girl." Kim sighed sympathetically before realising that jerry hadn't responded.
"You didn't." The blond said, eyes wide, stunned.
"You know, it's getting pretty late. We should probably head back." he said standing up and wiping the dirt and grass from his pants.
"Jerry." She warned, pulling him back down.
"what did jack say when he found out?" Kim asked. This drama was the closest thing she had to a television. She missed entertainment.
"shh.. He doesn't know." he whispered.
"Well,"she sighed, " at least you used protection. Pregnant in war would just be-" Kim looked at Jerry who didn't respond.
"Jerry!" she hit him.
"Ow!" he complained. "That hurts Kim. Besides, she isn't pregnant. I already decided that I'm never having kids after the whole 'Dojo Daycare' innocent."
Kim giggled remembering when jerry opened a day care so he wouldn't get expelled from school. What he learned that day was that kids were a handful.
"How would you know if shes pregnant? Did she take a test?" Kim questioned.
"No." he told her. " but seriously Kim, the chances are pretty low."
"I guess." Kim shrugged, learning against the log.
Time passed and they remained silent for a but before Jerry blew a bubble with his gum and put his finger up to signal Kim to wait a second.
Kim smirked and popped it with her finger causing it to pop in Jerry face.
He laughter could be heard across the compound as jerry tried the pick the gum off him.
"oh no you didn't!" Jerry said putting the gum back in his mouth, trying not to miss his fiancé to much. It didn't help that she used to do the same thing.
"Yes I did, where were you?" Kim continued laughing.
" you better run girl!" The latino jokingly threatened. They quickly stood up and he began chasing her until she went into her safe haven- her bunk.
"I'll get you tomorrow!" Jerry called trying to ram open the door she was holding closed
"good night Jerry!" she called as she locked the door.
"Night Kim!" he called back.
'Well at least i know running was good for something' she laughs, proud of herself and turned around to we're her whole bunk was staring at her.
She smiled awkwardly.
"hi."
