Nicole woke up at the loud crack of thunder, almost immediately followed by a bolt of lightning that illuminated her room. She let out a gasp, drawing her stuffed dog closer to her chest as she pushed herself back against the wall, sitting up in bed. Another strike of lightning and it's following crack almost shook the figures on her shelves, causing the girl to retreat in fear. She pulled her blanket more tightly around her, giving a small whimper. "It's okay." she whispered. "It-it's just Thor. He's...he's doing something."
Looking around fearfully as her room was lit up again for a few seconds, and when the darkness came back, it seemed even spookier. Like the shadows were growing and hiding things from her. Things that would hurt. She gave a small whimper, curling into a small ball and covering her ears with her hands. "Th-there's a far away land, so the stories all tell..." she sang quietly, trying to muffle out the noises of the thunder. "S-somewhere beyond the horizon...if we can f-find it, then all will be well...t...troubles there are few...s-someday we'll go to...…" she trailed around, giving a soft sob of fear. Even the old lullaby didn't work. She was scared.
But she was a hero. She couldn't be scared. Stubborn tears welled up in her eyes, but she forced them away. She was a hero. She wasn't scared.
CRACK
Never mind. She was scared.
Can you blame her?
Giving up on all pretenses of being brave, she scrambled out of bed, holding her stuffed dog tight to her chest. She almost tripped on nothing in her hurry to get out. She managed to open the door, scrambling down to her dads door. Shyly, she inched it open...to reveal that Clint was already awake, waiting for her.
"Hey, princess." the hero said softly, lifting the blankets in invitation. Within seconds, he had a cowering blonde by his side, face in his chest. "It's okay, Nikki." he promised, planting a kiss on the top of her head and running fingers through her hair. "You'll be okay." When that didn't seem to calm her, he started to hum low in his chest, a song he'd sung since she was a babe.
Though the same song had done nothing for her earlier, the familiar voice and the vibrations from his chest were comforting, and slowly, the young girls tears stopped. She was alright, now that she was by her fathers side. She was safe. She'd be okay. She had her dad, and all was well.
Even if Thor seemed to be bowling with the angels, wherever he was.
