The next morning at school, Natsu was a little shocked when he was cornered before first period by one very irritated blonde; Sting stood before him, with his arms trapping the rosette between them and asking why he suddenly wandered off during lunch. Clapping his hands together apologetically, "I'm sorry about that, Sting" bowing his head slightly.
Cautioning a glance, he watched as the blonde moved away and dropped his arms before stuffing them in his pockets then asking in a low voice: "Do you and him know each other? It seemed like you two were closer... or something,"
"Him? Oh," gasping, "Do you mean, Gray? Yeah... we met this past winter at a ski resort..." The rosette added with a smile that easily screamed that there was more than just that tidbit to the story. Blue eyes dulled as they understood that message loud and clear.
Sting shifted uncomfortably before muttering, "Just what's so great about that bastard anyways? All that popularity of his just inflates his already large ego..."
"Sting, why do you-" Before his question could even be voiced, the blonde interjected: "Just be careful around him, Natsu... He'll just toss you aside like he does everyone else when he's bored,"
Something in the rosette's chest lurched forward painfully as his mind chided him for the reaction; they were in love, weren't they? Gray saved him seven months ago and surely that wasn't enough time to change the raven's feelings for him. Right? After all he was still in love with Gray. Or was he just that pathetic to believe that the feeling was still mutual?
Shaking his head to rid himself of the depressive thoughts, the rosette decided he would just ask Gray how he felt about him; better to hear it right from his mouth than to take shots in the dark! Blue eyes watched as the teen's expression before them turned from pained sadness to a soft smile; the latter expression sparking surges of anger within him.
Meeting Sting's eyes, the rosette smiled: "Thanks for the warning, Sting"
The warning bell ringing to remind them they still had to get to first period lest they were scolded for being tardy; the blonde's words refused to leave Natsu's mind throughout the rest of the day. As lunch slowly came to an end, the rosette was still nervous about asking Gray how he felt about him but swallowed it and asked if they could hang out somewhere after school.
"Yeah, how about-" Before he could finish the words that brought hope in Natsu's chest, Angel interrupted their moment: "You can't, Gray... Did you forget, we have a meeting after school for the homecoming dance?"
Tan shoulders sagged when the raven scratched his cheek, "Oh yeah... I forgot," before turning to the rosette, "How about we meet in front of the auditorium after my meeting? It should get out around 5," He suggested in a hush voice that made Natsu's heart pound in his chest. Now he had until 5 to calm these depressing thoughts.
He didn't blame Sting for giving them life; after all, the blonde was simply looking after him. Despite having a dislike for the raven, he seemed to know a lot more about Gray than Natsu did. Then again, the two hadn't known each other for very long...
Deciding if he headed home he would be less likely to head back out, Natsu sat in front of the auditorium working on his homework. He didn't want to worry about getting too involved that he lost track of time so waiting at their spot was better than at another location in the school. Cobalt eyes swept up to the analog clock that hung on the wall opposite of him; it was nearing 5 and there was no sign of Gray. Yet.
"He'll be here..." He whispered to himself, mostly for comfort.
Now that he knew how close it was to five, Natsu couldn't focus on his work anymore; sighing, the rosette packed his stuff back in his bag and opted for standing. Brushing his pants for dust they might have picked up with one hand, he picked his bag with his other and slung it over his shoulder; cobalt eyes darting back and forth between the clock and the hallways near him. Since Gray asked to meet him here that meant his meeting was in a classroom that lead back to the auditorium. Right?
Distant voices perked his spirits as he looked towards the source; a few rowdy jocks were leaving the gymnasium, which deflated his spirit as he glanced down the other hallways. New voices made his heart leap in anticipation as he tried to find Gray in the crowd; gaze settling on the unmistakably wild raven locks, a smile spread across his face as Natsu started walking over to meet him halfway but his steps froze when his eyes connected with the arm connected with Gray's. Angel flanked the raven's side and the two were laughing and smiling; something unpleasant settled in Natsu's stomach at the sight and his legs, without his permission, ran away from the sight.
/ He'll just toss you aside like he does everyone else when he's bored /
Cobalt eyes burned as Natsu ran all the way home, ignoring the greeting he got when he ran inside; even when Romeo came to the door to say 'dinner was ready', the rosette told the child he wasn't hungry. He buried his face in his pillow as his depressive thoughts from before flooded his forefront; did Gray really not feel anything towards him anymore? Was seven months enough for the raven to move on? Is that how love works?
A soft knock, "Natsu, I'm coming in..." Igneel stepped inside and saw his eldest curled up on his side with a pillow over his face; he had a small idea of what had the rosette acting like this. Taking a seat on the edge of the bed, "Everything okay with Gray?"
Still buried in the pillow, the lovesick teen asked: "Hey... is it easy to fall out of love with someone?"
Half surprised by the sudden question, Igneel mentally pieced together just how close the two teens were before answering: "It depends on how much you love someone... After the death of my wife, I couldn't do it... She meant everything to me... she gave me Romeo after all," sighing, "but you and Gray... its obvious you two care a lot for one another... I mean," chuckling at the memory of their conversation the previous night, "he saved you seven months ago... I don't think I know anyone who would go that far for anyone,"
Somewhere within Igneel's words, cobalt eyes poked out from above the white cushion and when the adult met the teen's gaze he added: "Do you really think he thinks so little of your promises?"
Letting his question sink in, Igneel rubbed the rosette's knee comfortingly before excusing himself; curled up in the silence of his bedroom, Natsu chided himself before rummaging through his pockets for his phone. He should apologize for running off like that. One missed call and 4 new text messages. All from Gray. A smile graced his lips before he read each one:
/FROM: Gray

/FROM: Gray

TIME: 5:15PM

Natsu's heart picked up speed as a thought crossed his mind; had Gray waited over a hour for him in front of the auditorium?
