Chapter Three
The room was quiet. A person Shikamaru had never even heard of before just waltzed in, gave people offending nicknames, and slaughtered a hundred men without help in less than an hour and a half. Shikamaru seriously hoped she was on his side. He'd have to try to talk to her later. Maybe bring her some food, since she never got any. He knew she'd be here for a while. Her mission was over, and leaving the village in this situation would mean betraying the village. Not to mention Kakashi senpai. His anxiety radiated off of him. Shikamaru strongly suspected they had some unresolved issues they needed to sort out.
And Shikamaru was hardly ever wrong.
Genma's heart hurt.
She hadn't even looked at him.
But he'd been prepared for that. He'd even been prepared for her to have some scars, even if he didn't like it. Granted, not this many scars.
Slashes on her back, burns on the backs of her ankles, the word "spy" carved into her stomach. She'd been tortured.
But considering the circumstances, that was expected.
What wasn't expected were the tattoos- jutsus, no doubt-her lazy, almost indifferent demeanor, and her being able to take down a small army by herself.
But mostly, he didn't expect his chest to hurt so much. He actually wanted to cry.
Shiranui Genma doesn't cry, as a general rule.
They say rules are made to be broken. Genma never saw much point in that saying, but it didn't change the fact that in this moment, it was the truth.
Kakashi was freaking out. Well, inside, anyway. He had his "hip and cool" image to keep up, after all. He didn't have to even look at Guy to tell that his best friend was worried about him.
His little sister, who he hadn't seen in nearly twenty years, was a total badass.
A scary badass, but badass nonetheless. And the last time he saw her, he brushed her off. A pang of guilt assaulted his gut at the memories. His only family left had been sent away, leaving only a note and a vial of blood.
The note was an instruction manual on how to use the blood to summon Kanashi, but it would only work once. At the bottom, she wrote that she would love him always.
No one thought she would ever return, much less alive.
But she had. Well, that was one-fifth his doing, but still. He finally had his neechan back.
This time, Kakashi was resolved to make amends.
Mei would never show it, but she was happy that her old anbu team was together again. Well, almost everyone, and almost together. Ao was gone, but Mei knew that the crazy old bat was somewhere watching over her.
She looked at her old comrades, and could tell they shared her sentiments. They all had their masks, but their team had been close. As close as four spies and two traitors could be in the Bloody Mist Village.
Oh, yes, Mei was starting to like this alliance.
A lot happens in twenty years.
Her genin teammates- her real ones, from Konoha- were both dead. Uchiha Shisui- Shisui the Teleporter- died after giving his remaining eye to Itachi to prevent a civil war. Inuzuka Kentaro stayed in a building full of enemy ninja to set off explosives in order for his team to make it back to the village alive.
They both died honorably.
Her senpais were gone too. Hayate, Asuma, Rin, Obito-nii. Sandaime and Namikaze-taicho too. Even Shika-sensei.
Kanashi had recovered Jiraiya's body herself, once she found out about the Edo Tensei falling into Orochimaru-taicho's hands.
She had too many memories.
Realizing she couldn't evade her emotions any more, Kanashi blacked out from chakra depletion.
