Geez, I wish I had the writing speed of my friend Vile. He just whips these out, and I'm only halfway through my first. Maybe I'd go faster if I had my own computer. Oh well. Still, I will not let that bother me. Hopefully I will be able to crank out the rest of this and have better luck with the next ones (Yes, there will be more) Meantime, enjoy part 1 of the second half of Numbershot 41.5, part 4 total.
Numbershot 41.5 part 4
Half Number?!
The Battle Buffet's Last Call
Yuma was stunned. What started as a friendly duel between against his new friend, Gordy Fierman; has now turned into another duel with Number Cards on the line, or so Gordy claimed. But the glow on Gordy's forearm was unmistakable.
'Oh, man,' he thought. 'Just when I start to have a good time, THIS has to happen. Why do these Number cards have to ruin my life?'
Among the spectators, some confusion of their own was setting in.
"I don't understand," Mr. Fierman said to the three people next to him. "What's a Number card and why does my son want Yuma's?"
"It's a card like most others, I assume," Yuma's grandma told him; "but based upon the mumbling I sometimes hear from Yuma's room, there may be more to it than that."
Tori and Bronk exchanged nervous glances.
"You two wouldn't happen to know anything, would you?"
"Uh, not really, Ms. Tsukumo," Bronk said nervously.
"The only thing we do know," Tori said, "is that people who have them seem to have their personalities turned completely around. But Yuma somehow seems immune to those effects."
"You're telling me, Gordy's acting that way because a piece of cardboard is affecting him somehow?" Mr. Fierman asked.
Tori and Bronk said nothing, worried that they may have said too much already.
Mr. Fierman looked back at his son, who now seemed to have a slightly sadistic grin on his face.
"Oh, Gordy," he whispered. "What have you gotten yourself into now?"
"Yuma, the situation has been more drastic," Astral stated. "I believe now might be a good time for you to put your pride aside and let me help."
"Zip it, Astral!" Yuma yelled. "I can do this on my own."
"You can't do anything, yet," Gordy told his opponent, as cards slid out of his Graveyard. "Stronghold Stew has a cost to its power. For every 500 points of damage it deals, I have to banish a card from my Graveyard; or else I have to end its service."
The monster seemed to groan as its power slightly lowered. (ATK: 4350)
"Now, you can take your turn."
"Believe me, I will," Yuma said, drawing his card.
"It seems Yuma will try to ignore me despite the danger," Astral thought. "I may have to resort to tricking him into making the necessary moves ones again."
'Aw, man!' Yuma thought. 'I got nothing good to stand up to that big kettle Gordy's got. But there is no way I'm letting Astral take over this duel like he's done in the past. In fact, I think I have a play all planned out.'
"I summon Gagaga Magician."
In a flash, a new monster appeared on Yuma's field. It was a man of indeterminate age wearing a blue conical hat with orange rings on it and an orange piece of armor on its front. A blue cover and red scarf covered most of his face from view, only revealing one eye and a tuft of white hair from under the hat. He was clad in a dark blue full-body jumpsuit of some sort with two pieces of cloth attached to it: One came down the center with an orange outline, while the other formed a jacket flare or some makeshift cape. Both pieces had orange flame markings on the ends. He was also wearing reddish-brown shoulder pads (two on each shoulder, and one acting as a cover behind his head) and boots, and also had a chain wrapping around his neck and right boot, connected to a gold charm near his waist with eight dots connected by an odd pattern. (ATK: 1500)
"Then I'll use his effect, changing him from Level 4 to Level 8."
The magician's charm glowed slightly. First four of the dots turned white, and then four more. (Level: 48)
"Next, I play Gagagagain, which lets me draw 1 card for every 1 Levels on one of my 'Gagaga' monsters. Which means, since Gagaga Magician is Level 8, I can draw 4 cards."
Yuma took that many cards off the top of his Deck and added them to his hand. Looking them over, he couldn't help but grin
"I set 3 cards facedown," He finished, as the cards appeared. "Your move."
"Finally giving up, huh Yuma?" Gordy asked as he drew. "Works for me."
He then added his new card to his hand, and took a different one.
"Just so the Stew doesn't go stale, I'm playing Mixed Spice Garamasala, which lets me take three Spell Spice cards from my Deck to my hand."
Three cards popped out of his Deck, which he added to his hand.
'Perfect,' he thought, looking at the cards he added. 'Caraway, Filé, and Wasabi. All I gotta do is play these cards now, and no matter what he does, he'll lose this turn.' He looked up, staring straight at Yuma. 'Then again, why should I bother? Thanks to Garamasala Stronghold Stew is already 150 points stronger than before, and even then Yuma can't bring it down. I think I may as well just use one of the Spices and end this duel. Then, I can just take his Numbers with no problems. And I didn't even need to use my own Number card.'
"Next, I add in a dash of Spell Spice Caraway," he said as he showed the card and a cloud of brown powder (seeds, really, as Astral noticed) covered the field.
"With this bit of seasoning, I can now take 200 of your Life Points and add them to my own."
"WHAT!? You gotta be kidding me!" Yuma shouted. (Yuma: 1475) (Gordy: 7250)
"Afraid not. And because I added two more spices to my Graveyard, Stronghold Stew gains 300 ATK." (ATK: 4650)
"And now, I'll…"
"STOP!"
Everyone turned to stare at the source of the shout: Mr. Fierman.
"That's enough, Gordon!" he said, starting to walk towards his son. "I have no idea what's gotten into you, but it ends here."
"What do you mean, dad?" Gordy asked with a smirk.
"You know quite well what I mean. This isn't like you. This condescending attitude, this full-burner style of Dueling; it's like you're someone else. You always play your best, but you never try to blow your opponent out of the water like this (no offense, Yuma). You save cards Stronghold Stew and Curry Fiend Roux for when your behind, not to obliterate your opponent (again, no offense, Yuma). Now, it's time we talk about this. What's gotten into you?"
"What's the matter, dad?" Gordy asked. "Don't you like my new passion? I'm finally as good a chef as you. And when I beat Yuma and take his Numbers, I'll be even better."
"What are you talking about, Gordy? Sure I let you work the line these past couple of days, mainly because I thought you might pick up some tips from the pros should you want to join the trade; but ever since you've not only tried to force yourself as the head chef, but you've been serving out food that wouldn't be servable at a homeless shelter."
Gasps filled the air at the insult Mr. Fierman just said to his son, but Yuma just looked confused.
"I think I missed the insult," he said softly.
"I believe Mr. Fierman is saying the food Gordy is making is not exactly good."
"I still don't really get it," Yuma said, confused. "Food is food, right?"
"Not quite, Yuma," Mr. Fierman went on. "To the mundane, food may be food; but to the chef, it is there artwork. It takes great skill to get the temperature and mix of ingredients just right. And the only way to know if you have succeeded is by your taste and the taste of others. But, even then, the food in nothing without the most important ingredients the chef can add to it: their heart and soul. The food of a chef without passion suffers from that lack of passion. And to tell you the truth, your burned-black grilled cheese sandwich tastes better that the burgers you've been serving because you no longer have the passion you use to have."
Gordy stared at his father in shock, not wanting to believe he had just said that. Then he lowered his head and clenched his fist tightly, letting a low growl escape his grit teeth.
"Even now…" he whispered. "Even now…."
Suddenly, his head shot up, his eyes full of rage.
"EVEN NOW, ON THE EDGE OF TRIUMPH, YOU STILL WANT TO CRITISIZE ME AND PUT ME DOWN!?"
Mr. Fierman's face changed to one of concern and worry. Hearing his son say that confirmed to him that Gordy wasn't himself.
"It's not true, Gordy…"
"SAVE IT!" the young chef "wannabe" shouted. "Just you wait. Once I get Yuma's Numbers, I'll show you what kind of song, and what kind of passion I have!"
He then turned to Yuma.
"Hope you're ready Yuma, because here comes a big helping of your defeat. Hungry Burger, attack his Magician!"
Once more, the living sandwich monster bounced down the field, leaping high to attack the magician.
"Not the monster I figured on, but it still works out," Yuma said as he presses a button on his Duel Disk. "I activate Mirror Mail."
His Trap Card lifted and shot a beam of light at Gagaga Magician, coating it in a golden aura.
"Thanks to this, Gagaga Magician now has the same Attack Points as your Hungry Burger." (ATK: 2000)
"If you think that'll help you, you're dead wrong," Gordy shouted. "Any good duelist knows monsters with the same Attack Points destroy each other."
The burger drew closer, but Gagaga Magician seemed unfazed by the coming attack.
"That's why I also have this set," Yuma declared as one of his other Traps lifted. "I activate Half Unbreak."
Bubbles floated out of the Trap Card. One rather large one seemingly swallowed up Gagaga Magician, shielding him as Hungry Burger's attempt to bite him run into the bubble, keeping the sentient food at bay. The Magician then clenched his fist as it charged with lavender energy. He then threw and uppercut which launched the charged energy, struck Hungry Burge, and destroyed it.
Gordy growled angrily.
"Fine then, if you want to be a picky eater, I guess I'll just have to force-feed you. Stronghold Stew, serve him another helping of your Surprise Stew Cannon."
The giant pot aimed its cannon at the magician in the bubble and fired another torrent of its contents at him.
"I activate my Trap!" Yuma called; just the torrent washed over Gagaga Magician and struck the Duelist with enough force to slam him against the wall. (Yuma: 50)
"Some Trap, Yuma," Gordy taunted. "It didn't limit the damage any more than it already was."
"The point wasn't to lower the damage to me," Yuma grunted as he stood back up, "but to deal you double."
"What?"
It was then all could see the Trap Yuma had activated.
"Thanks to Bye Bye Damage, any damage I take, you get to, at twice the price," Yuma explained as the card fired a beam of energy that struck Gordy in the chest, making him grunt. (Gordy: 4400)
"You lousy…" was all Gory could mutter as his anger built up.
In the crowd, a look of worry came across the faces of those cheering for Yuma.
"He's only got 50 Life Points left!" said Bronk. "You sure you got a plan, Yuma?"
"Just gonna do….like I always do," Yuma said between deep breaths.
