He was known as the rootless man, roaming the Brazilian coast in search of a village to call his own. None would accept him into their homes, for he was followed by a creeping shadow of ill-luck. His original home had disappeared from knowledge—and the villagers, fearing a similar decline from common gossip, would not allow him to set down new roots.

But he never gave up his quest for a second home. Dragging his stunted shoots behind him, he would leave for another village, always hopeful that acceptance waited just beyond the horizon.
