Blue Adams, 16, District Eight Male
Sunlight streamed through the window next to my bed and I slowly pulled the sheets of my legs. I hoisted myself out of my bed and stretched.
My door was slightly open; Colton, my boyfriend must have gotten up already.
Yes, my boyfriend. I'm gay.
My family had always supported me, even if I'm different. Colton and I have always been the odd ones out at school, but we don't care that much.
I looked in my closet and pulled out a black T-shirt, white jeans, and black sneakers. I heard a call from downstairs.
"Blue, get down here, your pancakes are getting cold!"
The familiar voice of my mother. I finished pulling on my outfit quickly and raced down the stairs to find my family, including Colton, sitting around the table. The aroma of pancakes and maple syrup wafted into my nose.
I inhaled deeply and grinned. I sat down and piled heaps of pancakes onto my plate, pouring syrup over it. It smelled different.
"Where'd you get the syrup, Ma?" I questioned her, shoveling pancakes into my mouth.
"District Seven," she said, proudly. I gulped down orange juice as my eyes grew wide.
"No way!" I half shouted, still shoving pancakes down my throat. She nodded.
I finished my breakfast and looked at Colton. It still was weird. Colton's already 22, it's weird I'm 6 years younger than him.
I hurried up the stairs and glanced at our clock. 11:32. I have 13 minutes.
I soaked my honey blond hair in water from our sink and combed it. I looked in the mirror. A blue eyed, blond haired, tall boy looked back.
I decided I looked presentable enough. At least I wasn't in my pajamas, like that one girl from two years ago. She died in the bloodbath, no surprise there.
A clock rang, signaling it was time to go. I stomped down the stairs and made my way out.
Corinthia Dolce, 17, District Eight Female
I sighed as I woke up to the blaring noise of my alarm clock. My older sister, Clara, was cooking downstairs.
Well, not exactly cooking. I walked downstairs in my comfy PJs and found my two older sisters. Clara, the younger one who was 32, was buttering bread. Donna, the older one, who was 33, was pouring milk into cups.
Clara spotted me first. "Good morning, Corinthia!" she beamed. I gave her a shy smile. I was Reaped once, I didn't want to be reaped again.
"You won't be reaped again, Cori. You know, there's still, like, 29 girls that could be reaped." She played with my auburn hair.
"But that's so much less than all the girls from the year I was Reaped!" tears started forming in my eyes.
"You'll be fine," she reassured. "Come on, let's eat." I sat down at the small table and the rickety chairs. The bright blue paint was peeling, but our house was decent.
I scarfed down the bread quickly; I didn't eat often. Donna's little boy needs to eat too. He's only four.
I'm really grateful for my sisters. They took me in and cared for me like a child. I finished eating and pushed in my chair. I cleaned up and headed to my room.
I brushed my auburn hair and washed off my face. My freckles were starting to become visible; just not too visible yet. I walked over to my closet and pulled out the nicest thing I had.
I pulled on black leggings and a white blouse until Carla knocked on the door. "Corinthia," she said. "I have something for you."
She revealed an indigo dress with a cute lace belt and brown boots. I gasped and ran to hug my sister.
"It was a present from mom and dad," she said. "We were going to give it to you for your 18th birthday for the reaping. But I mean.."
I nodded as I started to pull on the dress. I fastened the belt tightly and pulled my hair into a bun. My parents had died when I was 15, leaving me to care for all my siblings. The dress must have been preserved and hidden in our old house.
My sister smiled and tears formed in the corner of her eyes. "You look beautiful," she sighed.
A clock rang and Donna came in with my niece, Daniel. "Time to go," she said. I smiled and went off with them.
Blue Adams, 16,, District Eight Male
I winced as the needle pricked my finger.
Blue Adams?" the peacekeeper asked. I nodded. "Welcome back," She said and pointed to the 16 year old section.
I stood there, like I had so many years ago. Cherry Lala, the escort, walked up to the stage. She had an obnoxious red bun with her hair curling down, curly bangs, and a dress that was bright purple with a hoop skirt, ruffles, lace, and Lacey sleeves.
She was adorned with jewelry and covered dramatically with purple and red makeup. Her skin was a pale white. While noticing her features, I missed a speech, and the dark days video. I even zoned out for the girls' reaping.
I was pulled back into reality when I heard the boys' name. I tensed up.
It was my name.
I swallowed and walked up to the stage as Cherry beckoned me forward. I heard Red crying.
Cherry asked for volunteers, yet everyone stayed silent. The girl and I shook hands, and then the peacekeepers grabbed onto me and led me into the Justice Building.
A few minutes later, Red burst into the room followed my by mother and father. Red tackled me to the ground, laughing, and I hugged him. My parents stood in the corner, silent.
"You gotta come home, Blue. You gotta! You already went in there, you know what to do, please!" I nodded and continued tackling him.
"I will, Red, I will!" I chuckled as I tried to get him off me.
My dad cleared his throat and Red gave me one last squeeze and left my parents with me. "You can win," my dad said. "You have training, okay?"
I nodded and my mother spoke. "You can't leave me again, my precious baby boy," she started sobbing.
"Don't worry, I'll come back," I kissed my mom on the cheek and she nodded, walking out with my father.
My friends came in shortly after. "Hey," Will said. I waved.
"You'll come back, right?" asked Cyan, one of my other friends.
"Well, duh. I can't die on you twice," We all laughed. Tris, Will's boyfriend, came over. "Hey," she said. "Good luck." She smiled.
My friends left and Colton came in with his family. Colton walked up to me and squeezed me. He usually gets embarrassed kissing in front of his family.
I find something on my wrist. A leather bracelet. "Our first anniversary bracelet," he said. "They returned it to me when you died."
I looked at his sister, who had a guilty look on her face. Colton and I hugged one last time. "I love you," he said. His sister approached me.
"I'm sorry. I'm a horrible person," she said. "I hope you win," She said. She hugged me. I was startled, that hugged her back.
Colton and his family left, and the peacekeeper came to bring me on the train.
Corinthia Dolce, 17, District Eight Female
The needle pricked my finger as the peacekeeper asked my name. I nodded curtly as she pointed me to my section.
I stood with the other girls,as Cherry walked on stage with her ridiculous red hair and purple ruffled dress. Her pale white skin sparkled.
"Welcome to the reaping of the fifth quarter quell!" She said cheerfully. The dark days video played and the mayor said a speech.
"Now, to select our female tribute." She walked daintily over to the bowl, almost stumbling. I stifled a laugh. She opened the slip. "Corinitha Dolce!"
I refuse to believe it. But no, it was my name. I started to cry but wiped away my tears quickly as a gentle peacekeeper helped me up to the stage.
"Now for our male tribute," She said, selecting a slip. "Blue Adams!" A boy walked up to the stage and shook my hand. Nobody volunteered for us.
A peacekeeper dragged me to the Justice building. Carla had obviously been crying, her eyes were red and puffy.
"Corinthia, stay strong," she told me. "Do what you did last time, okay? And be careful," she kissed me and Donna nodded.
"Take this," she said. "As a token." She handed me a small ring with a C carved in it. I started to cry and hugged all my sisters.
My niece, Daniel hugged me and cling onto my leg. Donna picked him up and he started screaming and crying.
"We love you!" Carla screamed as the peacekeeper dragged her, Donna, and my niece out.
I waited a few more minutes and the peacekeeper popped in. "Come on," he said. "We're going to the train."
