CHAPTER 4: I AM FORCED TO READ A BOOK

Percy's POV

It was Monday morning. I walked out of my dorm with Grover to our first class—English. I hated English. I'm dyslexic, so I can't read very well. In the past, I've never gotten out of a reading assignment, and I didn't think it would be so easy here, either.

When I walked into the classroom, we all waited for Ms. Hera, who would be our English teacher for this semester. I wasn't so sure I'd like this class, but my mother told me that if I didn't try hard enough, she'd send me to a community college or something. And I'm pretty sure I wanted to be out of the house!

Ms. Hera walked into the room, dressed in a flower-patterned dress. She wrote her name on the board, but we all knew who she was.

"Welcome to English," she said happily, sitting on the desk. "I'm Ms. Hera, and I'll be teaching this to you all throughout the semester. How is everything going so far?"

"Awful!" Jason yelled. "The food sucks, my roommate snores, and I can't find a private place so Piper and I can smooch."

"I'm so sorry to hear that, Mr. Grace," Ms. Hera said, though she didn't sound too concerned about it. "Well, if there's anything you kids wish to talk about, you can find my office hours in the syllabus that's in front of you." She snapped her fingers, and a five-paged syllabus appeared in front of us. "And here are your books," she said. She snapped her fingers again, and a copy of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief appeared.

"Why are we reading this?" I asked.

"Hello!" Annabeth yelled from the other side of the room. "You're in it!"

"I am?"

"How stupid are you?"

"SILENCE!" Ms. Hera yelled. "I wasn't going to give homework on your first day, but now that you've disrupted my class, Mr. Jackson and Miss Chase, I'm going to assign chapters 1-2 for the next class period."

Thalia's POV

That damn Jackson, always screwing everything up. I can't believe that moron would disrupt Ms. Hera's English class. Well, he was a "seaweed brain", so I guess he could interrupt.

I immediately went to the library and read the first chapter: "I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher". I thought it was pretty good, until Jason bugged me.

"Hey, sis, I need some money. There's a soda machine and I'm really thirsty."

"No. Get a job," I replied, and continued to read.

Half an hour later, he was still standing there. "What?" I asked irritably.

"PLEASE?" he whined.

"JASON! THALIA!"

Someone walked over to us, and I recognized him as Zeus. "What are you two fighting about now?"

"Dad, Thalia won't give me money," said Jason. "What do I do?"

"Well, son, I'll just give you a dollar and you can go buy yourself a nice, cold soda from the vending machine. But then you have to get a job to pay me back, 'cause I'm pretty sure you're broke from your summer vacation."

Jason hung his head. We'd gone to Greece and he spent all of his euros and cool souvenirs. He took the dollar. "Thanks, Dad."

"Anytime, son. Have you seen Hera anywhere?"

"Why?" I asked.

"We're going on a date tonight, and I need to know if I look sexy in this suit."

I glanced at him. He was wearing his pinstriped suit he usually wore at Olympian Council meetings. "You look fine," I told him.

"Thanks, honey!" And he bolted off.

I sighed and went back to my notebook. Well, my father can be a weirdo sometimes, but that was totally normal.

A little while later, I had to go to the gym to get something from Ms. Athena. On the way, I noticed a flyer for the Involvement Fair.

Dearest Students of Demigod College,

In order for you to become more involved with the campus, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you join a club or two on campus your first semester. Studies show that being involved in extracurricular activities may stimulate brain cells.

If you have any further questions, please contact Miss Artemis, the natural sciences teacher, for information.

Sincerely,

Miss Athena, Co-Director of Student Engagement
