I wanted to get this up before Tuesday's episode, but then all of a sudden, we went on vacation for like a week, and I was only told the day we left.

PLEASE read and review this time. So far I've only gotten a few reviews, like less than five. I know some people have added it to their story alert, etc, and I'd like to thank those people, but could you please take the time to review? I'm really trying to improve my writing, and I can't do that without people telling me what they thought.

This is set at the end of season 2, episode 2. Italics is where somebody is talking.

Auggie was sitting alone, somewhere in the DPD (he didn't really care where). Annie had gone home hours ago to see her family. As far as he knew, it was just him and the janitors now. He was thinking about the mission. All the things that could have gone wrong. All the things that did go wrong. Everything that could have happened.

He heard heels clacking discordantly down the hall. Not the musical clicking of Annie's favorite Christian Louboutins, but something just as familiar. It was probably Joan. His guess was confirmed when he smelled his perfume as she slid onto the bench next to him.

"It's not easy, is it, making decisions that affect your friends safety?" she asked softly. If only she knew that his fear for Annie stretched far beyond a mere friendly worry. If only she knew that every moment Annie was on a mission was a moment he was scared for her. Scared she might not come back to him.

Finally he answered the question that still hung in the air.

"No, it's not." he said. It was the truth. He hated being responsible, completely responsible, for everything that might happen to Annie. If he made a mistake, one single mistake, she could wind up dead. Joan was more experienced. She had seen these missions time and again. Hell, she'd even been an operative in her time. But he was just a special forces op-turned-techno geek.

"I've got news for you: It doesn't get any easier." Joan hated to see him so cut up. She knew he was completely in love with Annie (the whole office knew, except for Annie herself). Still, he was perfectly capable of keeping her safe. Joan knew he would go to the ends of the earth for her.

The life they'd all chosen might not be easy or safe, but for Auggie, he was glad. Even thought it had cost him his sight, it had brought him something infinitely more rewarding. Her. She was all he needed to be happy. All he needed to feel the same again. Maybe someday he'd get the courage to tell her.

As Joan got up and walked away, he decided that just in case she didn't come back some time (heaven forbid) he needed to tell her. And he would. Tomorrow.

Ever since I saw that episode, I've wanted to do a oneshot on that scene. I just really like all the dynamics there. Please please please review!
