"Can you remember how you got these scars?" Abby asked Raine.
Raine shook her head. A few days after the Electrix incident, she worked up the nerve to ask the humans (and Hela) for help. She had spent those few days searching her memory banks for any connection to the strange black scars on her face (Chip had confirmed that they were scars, not rust or dirt). Her eyes were diamond shaped with a heavy black outlining. Her left eye had a long black scar that ran up to her forehead while her right eye had a black scar that ran down her face. The cornea of her eyes were gray and her irises were small and light blue. Even though they did their best, Raine could see that the humans and robots were a little creeped out by her eyes. Even she had to admit that she looked creepy. And she liked it.
Chip leaned forward adjusting his glasses. "Maybe they aren't scars, but instead they're decorative markings?"
"But you said that they were scars." Conner said.
"I could be wrong about them being scars."
"They have to be scars," Mong said pointing at them, "look at how deep they're carved in her face."
"You're right." Conner thought for a bit. "I wonder if there from an accident?
"Raine, are you sure you can't remember anything about them?" Hela asked.
Raine shook her head again. No matter how hard she tried she just couldn't remember anything about herself. Only noises and static.
The next day at the Bodies pit, Conner and Cubix came early looking for tools. Cubix happily held out one of Hela's tool boxes. "Tools." Raine, who was on the floor playing with her visor, rolled her eyes and said, "No, really."
Conner shook his hands. "No Cubix. I don't think the jobs that big."
Mr. Fixit came over to them. "These might come in handy Conner." He opened his rectangle hands, revealing an assortment of tools inside. "Take what you need."
Hela then pulled up on her white hover motorcycle. "You've got quite the assortment of tools there." She commented as she walked over to Conner. "Yeah," he said, "one of the robots at my dad's shop is acting a little funny. I'm going to check it out."
"I think I'll go with you," Hela said, "the last time I had a talk with your father it was obvious that he didn't like robots, or me." She chuckled a little. "I think I can do something to change that. And Raine can come with us, too."
Raine ignored her and kept playing with her visor.
"She's been playing with that visor for a while. I think it would be good for her to take a break."
"She thinks that she would not like to take a break." Raine retorted.
"Common Raine, I want you to go with us."
Raine sighed annoyingly, "Fine. I guess I'll go with you." To be honest, it was a little better than staring at her visor.
Hela and Raine and Diagnotix (she thought that Conner can use him to help his dad) rode the motorcycle while Conner rode Cubix. When they arrived Abby was just heading out the door. "Conner." She said a little surprised.
Conner looked at the darkened room. "The power went out again?"
"Yeah," Abby said, "So, yeah. Common, I'm going to complain."
"Where?" Conner asked.
Before his question could be answered they heard his dad arguing with a robot who looked kind of like a chef. Conner and his dad talked a bit and then Hela walked over to them. Bored, Raine walked over, too. "I give it orders but it doesn't carry them out." She heard him say. "How am I supposed to run a ship shape shop?" "Let me take a look." Hela said. "It sounds like a problem with the command reception system."
Conner's dad looked Raine and Hela. "You two are back again."
"Don't worry," Hela said, patting the robots shoulder, "everything's going to be just fine."
"Thanks Miss!" The robot said.
Conner's dad took them out to the back of the shop. Hela looked the chef robot over. "Hmm. Just as I suspected. It looks like the reception board is malfunctioning."
"That sounds serious." The robot said nervously.
"Don't worry, Waitrex. With a few minor adjustments you'll be just fine."
"Great."
"Conner!" Everyone turned and saw Conner's dad on the shops roof deck. "They just found out what's been causing all these blackouts! Take a guess!"
"No one cares!" Raine said.
"Ok we give up." Abby said.
"It's a Sewex. A robot that cleans the sewer."
Abby and the rest of the Bodies immediately ran off to find the robot. Raine stayed behind with Hela. Conner's dad shouted down to Hela before heading back inside the shop, "Well, I guess I was right about robots after all."
Hela sighed a frustrated sounding sigh. Gathering up her tools she walked back to her motorcycle. Raine and Diagnostix followed. "Well that was fun." Raine said sarcastically. "Good to know that I will not be listening to you ever again."
Hela loaded her tools on to her motorcycle and turned to Raine. "I want you to stay here and help Mr. Graham with his shop."
Raine frowned. "What?"
"With that one Waitrex malfunctioning, and a store full of people, he's going to need some extra help. Besides, I think that you're just the robot to convince him that robots are helpful and to give them a chance."
Raine flipped her visor up and gave Hela a questioning look. "And why would I do that? I just said I wasn't going to listen to you anymore."
"You're a robot that doesn't like humans. He's a human that doesn't like robots." She folded her arms and smirked. "Two negatives make a positive."
Raine didn't want to be around anymore humans than necessary. But she didn't want be around the Bodies either, especially around Cubix. Reluctantly, she sighed heavily, crossed her arms, and said, "I guess I can stay."
The two went back inside the shop and approached Graham. He was wiping off the front counter. "You two are back? Forget something?"
Hela shook her head. She told him that she was going to leave Raine here to help him with the store. "Figured you could use the extra help, since the one Waitrex is in need of repairs."
Graham thought about it. "I do need the extra help. But how do I know that she break like the Waitrex?"
"The Waitrex isn't broken and Raine is in top-notch condition."
"Well…ok, fine. But if anything happens to my shop I'm holding you accountable."
"Deal."
Hela left, leaving Graham and Raine in a shop full of hungry customers. Graham went into the kitchen and grabbed a tray full of doughnuts. He thrust the tray into Raine's hands. "Here, these go to that table in the back."
Frowning, Raine took the tray and stomped off to the table.
"And smile!" Graham ordered.
Scowling, Raine went over to the table and dropped the tray on it, growled "Here.", and went back to the counter. Graham gave her the next tray and that was how it was for the rest of the morning. He'd give her a tray of fresh doughnuts, she'd go over to the tables that the doughnuts were supposed to go to, drop the tray not caring if the doughnuts spilled on the floor or not, and then head back to the counter to get the next tray. Some of the costumers complained and some didn't (mostly because they were afraid of Raine's appearance and thought that she would attack them). When Graham asked her to smile more or to set the trays down more gently, she would ignore him and keep doing what she was doing. This of course frustrated him. The other Waitrex didn't know who to be more scared of- Graham or Raine.
When the afternoon finally rolled around, Graham went out behind the shop to take his lunch break. Raine followed him because she didn't really have anything else to do. From a distance, she watched him finish his lunch and pull out a small piece of paper from his pocket. She heard him murmur to the paper, "…miss you Taryn."
"What's a Taryn?"
Startled, Graham whipped around and said, "Why aren't you waiting tables!?"
"What's a Taryn?"
"It's nothing. Just go back and wait tables."
"What's a Taryn?"
"Why do you care?"
"Why aren't you answering my question, human?"
"I don't have to answer your question, robot." Graham said. "Now go back inside and wait tables."
Raine crossed her arms. "I don't take orders from humans, Gra-ham. I don't care much for your kind but because this 'Taryn' thing is so secretive that you can't answer my question it interests me, a little."
Graham put the picture back in his pocket. "You're just a robot, what's it matter to you?"
"Well, what's it matter to you?"
He didn't say anything. Very slowly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the picture. He stared at it for a while before saying, "Taryn is my wife…..was my wife…. was Conner's mother…"
When he said 'mother' Raine got the same chilly feeling she got when she touched her scars. She responded, "Oh."
Graham continued, "She was the love of my life and my best friend. She was funny, kind, and caring….she was perfect…. Conner and I loved her very much…." He took a breath and continued, his voice grew sad. "Bad things shouldn't happen to good people….cancer sucks…." His voice started to crack. "The doctors said that the machine would work; that it would shorten the cancer's growth, giving them a chance to find a cure." He clenched his fist causing the picture to wrinkle. "The machine made the cancer worse! She died because of machines! Because of robots!" He shoved the picture back into his pocket and looked to Raine with tears in the corners of his eyes. "Now do you see why I hate robots!?"
Raine shrugged. "No."
"What!?" He yelled, "What's the matter with you? Don't you have any feelings!?
Any emotion!? Any heart!?"
"No."
Confused he asked, "What? Don't robots have those EP…thingy's like in the commercials? They give robots emotions."
"Mine is…different."
"Different how? Is Hela fixing you like she's fixing my broken Waitrex?"
"Hela isn't my owner."
"Well who is?"
"I don't know…I don't have one…one that can remember…"
"Can't remember?" He asked her, "Did you lose your memories?"
She nodded. Why was she telling him this?
He replied with an, "Oh." They stood there in silence, examining each other, not really knowing what to say. Graham then rubbed his temples and sighed. "I'm a human that doesn't like robots. You're a robot that doesn't like humans." He sighed again. "What a pair are we?"
"We are not a 'pair', human. I may be able to tolerate you but my feelings towards the humans remains the same."
"Same with my feelings towards robots." He checked his watch. "We need to get back to work."
As they headed back inside Graham said to Raine, "You can come over the house with Conner and Cubix. To play or hang out or whatever the kids are saying these days. You know, if you care."
Raine thought about it for a minute. "We'll see." Perhaps, one day, she might go over. Not to be with Conner or Cubix, but to be with the robot hating human Graham. He wasn't like the other humans who loved robots-and that's what Raine kind of liked about him.
