Hey guys. So, this chapter took me forever to write, and honestly, I'm having a bit of trouble with this story, but hopefully the chapter turned out okay. It feels kind of rushed… though almost every chapter I write feels rushed, but… Hopefully you all like it.
"So, how was your first day of third grade?" Mrs. Mitchell questioned her son as she backed out of the school parking lot. From the smile Logan had on his face, she could only assume that it had gone well. The little 8-year-old was smiling widely, his brown eyes shining with excitement.
"It was great!" Logan said in a happy tone, smiling at his mother, even though she had her eyes on the road. "I made a new friend today!"
"Really? And who's this new friend of yours?" his mother asked, curious as to who this friend of his was.
"His name is Kendall. I don't think he has many friends, because he looked really scared and shy at first. But I asked him if he wanted to be my friend, and he said he did. Then we drew, and he made me a drawing of us as fish!" He grabbed his backpack, unzipped it, and took out the drawing the blond had given him. A big smile came to his face as his eyes once again landed on the little fish that had his and Kendall's hairstyles. "One of them has spiky brown hair, like me, and the other one has blond hair, like Kendall."
"Kendall?" Mrs. Mitchell repeated the name, it sounding familiar, as if she had heard it before. That's when she remembered the little blond boy she had seen just a few months before, in the coffee shop she worked at. "Does Kendall have green eyes and is a little bit shorter than you?" she asked her son, now curious to know if it was the same little boy.
"Yup, he's almost the same height as me, though. Do you know him?"
"As a matter of fact, I think I might. A few months ago, he came into the coffee shop, with his mom and little sister. He said he knew you from school."
"Yeah, I've known him since we moved, but we had never talked, until today," Logan explained. "He doesn't really talk too much, I guess. He's always quiet and only speaks if he has to... The kids aren't too nice to him," the brunette said, the smile on his face faltering.
"What do you mean?"
"Well... Other kids like to push him around, knock him down, say mean things to him... stuff like that. Even those who are older than us like to pick on him, and I'm not really sure why. I've heard it's been like that for a while now. He doesn't really do anything to stop them. I guess he's not like them."
Mrs. Mitchell nodded in response as she pulled up into their home. "Okay, we're home, kiddo," she said, even though Logan had already opened his door and ran out. Within seconds, he was standing in front of their house, impatiently waiting for his mom to open the door.
"Hey, mom?" He stopped in the middle of the living room once they were both inside. He turned to his mother, who was already making her way towards the kitchen, to make something for them to eat. "Can I maybe... invite Kendall over sometime? He seems really lonely, and he just... he seemed really happy earlier today. And I just... I wanna make him happy," Logan said, whispering the last part. "Would that be okay?"
Mrs. Mitchell smiled and walked over to her son, pulling him into a hug. "Of course you can, if that's okay with him and his mom. I think it would be a great idea."
Logan grinned and giddily bounced on the tips of his toes, exited to tell Kendall the very next day.
"Hey, Kendall!"
Kendall stopped in his tracks, seeing Logan sitting in the same table they had been sitting on the day before. The brunette was smiling widely, and seeing the smile he wore, only made a smile spread across Kendall's face.
"H-Hi." Kendall waved shyly as Logan got up from his seat and ran over to where the smaller boy was still standing.
"It feels like forever since I saw you!" the brunette said, pulling the younger boy to the seat across from his. Kendall was forced to hold back a giggle at Logan's words.
"But we just saw each other yesterday," he pointed out as he took a seat.
"Yeah, but I have something I wanna tell you!" the little brunette said in an exited voice. "I asked my mom if you could come over sometime, and she said that as long as you wanted to, and if your mom was okay with it, you could come over whenever you wanted." Logan smiled from ear to ear, but his smile soon vanished when Kendall didn't return it. "Don't you want to?" he asked in a quieter voice.
Kendall looked up at him and fidgeted in his seat. "I, um... It's not that I don't want to," he responded. "I've just... I've just never been invited over to anyone's house before. I guess I thought... I thought that you didn't really want to be my friend."
"Oh." Logan was left at a loss for words. Without thinking, he reached across the table and took a hold of Kendall's hand.
"What are you doing?" Kendall questioned, feeling uncomfortable with the interaction. Logan didn't respond, but rather grabbed ahold of Kendall's pinky finger and intertwined it with his own.
"Pinky promise we'll always be friends?" he finally said, smiling at the green eyed boy. Kendall turned his attention from their hands to Logan's face. Despite the fear he had of trusting anyone, he had a feeling he could trust Logan.
"Really?" he asked, to which Logan nodded his head.
"Really," the brunette responded.
After hesitating for a few seconds, he smiled, a real smile—one that seemed to reach the corners of his eyes. "I promise," he said, pushing his worries to the side.
Without warning, Logan got out of his seat and went around to where Kendall was sitting, and wrapped his arms around him. Being taken aback by the action, Kendall hugged him back awkwardly, hiding his smile behind Logan's shoulder.
"Don't worry, I won't hurt you," Logan whispered, and somehow, despite only having known him for a day, Kendall knew that he meant it. There was something about Logan that made Kendall trust him. Despite being so young, Kendall was always cautious around strangers, even kids his age, all because of how much people had hurt him in the past. But Logan... Logan was nice and friendly, and he genuinely seemed like he wanted Kendall around. So, for once, Kendall felt safe and not alone.
Pulling back, Logan noticed that their teacher had entered the classroom, so he quickly turned around and sat back down in his seat.
The first half of the day seemed to take forever, even though it was really only like three hours. When lunchtime came, Logan pulled Kendall to a table with two other boys, and once again, Kendall grew nervous.
"Don't be scared, they're nice," Logan said as he pulled him along. Kendall nodded but said nothing. "Kendall, this is James," he said, pointing to a boy who appeared to be tall, with shaggy brown hair and hazel eyes, "and this is Carlos." Unlike James, Carlos seemed shorter, with brown eyes and black hair.
"Guys, this is Kendall," he said, pointing to the blond boy.
"Hey, aren't you the kid nobody likes?" Carlos asked without thinking, covering his mouth as soon as the words had left his mouth. Logan sent a glare in his direction, while Kendall just stood there awkwardly, his gaze turning towards the floor.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that," Carlos mumbled. "I'm Carlos, by the way, though Logan just said that. Um... James?" He turned towards the brunette, not knowing what to say.
James glared at Carlos, but then turned to Kendall with a nervous smile on his face. "My name's James, and well, that's Carlos. He says things without thinking sometimes, but he's nice. Right, Carlos?" He nudged the smaller boy, and Carlos stuck his tongue out at him.
"Yeah... What he said," he responded. "I'm sorry for what I said... I'm sure you're not bad if Logan likes you," he said. He then grabbed a cookie from his plate and offered it to Kendall. "Here, you can have my cookie."
Kendall stared at the cookie in Carlos' hand for a few seconds, before reaching out to grab it. "Thanks..."
Logan took a seat in front of Carlos, pulling Kendall to sit beside him. "Don't worry, it's not poisonous," Logan whispered in his ear. Carlos, having heard him, kicked him from under the table, causing Logan to yelp in surprise. "Hey!"
Kendall smiled at the interaction and took a bite of the cookie. He turned from Logan, to Carlos, to James, and then back to Logan. Smiling, Logan wrapped an arm around Kendall's shoulders, pulling him close. "They'll be your friends, too. They won't hurt you, trust me."
Kendall's smile vanished for a second, but it came back as soon as he locked eyes with Logan. "I do trust you," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement when he realized that now he wouldn't just have one friend but three.
He wouldn't be alone anymore.
Oh, by the way, I forgot to say this on the last author's note, but the scene where Kendall draws Logan and himself as fish, was actually inspired by an interview I watched a long time ago. In the interview, Logan is answering questions while Kendall's drawing, and he actually draws them as fish, and it's just the cutest thing ever, lol.
Anyway... Was that okay? I hope it was. I didn't really know where to end the chapter, so it turned out sounding cheesy… I think. If there's anything I can improve on, or anything you would like to see, please let me know. Honestly, it would help a lot. :) Thank you for reading!
